Slip Into Neutral .......??

Whenever I have to stop and wait, like @ red lights etc, I always slip it into neutral. I just hate the feeling of "holding it back" w/ the brake. I figure something must be slipping as I hold the brake .......probably the clutch ? When it's time to move on, I slip it back into drive and away we go. Anyone else do this ? What do you hard-core mechanic types think? Can this cause problems ?
 
I can't speak for wear on the transmission; however, I'd have to second what iyfbyts said. Hold the brake, tap the auto hold, remove foot. So simple. Plus you can still take advantage of the auto shut off feature that way - can't do that when in neutral and not braking.
 
You’re likely putting more wear on the transmission by slipping it in/out of neutral every time you come to a stop.

Traditional automatic transmissions don’t use a clutch, but rather a torque converter. This torque converter is what allows the engine to be running and the vehicle in drive, but not moving. A traditional torque converter is filled with fluid and has not parts between the engine and transmission in direct contact (like with a clutch) and does not wear any faster by a stopped vehicle in drive.

Just leave it in drive when you stop and, if you fancy, press the auto hold button so you don’t have to keep holding the brake.

You're wasting your time doing this. Every time you pop off drive into neutral your engine is revving higher too. You're saving your transmission but killing your engine..lol

Seriously, just do what everyone above suggested or keep your foot on the brake pedal.
 
What gn3rps said. This is a complete waste of time on a torque converter automatic. You're also interrupting the auto stop feature which, IMO, is also good for engine life as idling means low oil pressure and therefore wear.
 
WOW ! Thanx all for the input. Especially gn3rps.........I read the link about torque converters, and understood just enough to believe you're right ........no sense at all to slip in & out of drive at a stop. Thanx again .......

How does the "Auto Hold" feature work ? Do you have to turn it off each time ? (Yup, I'm too lazy to go read the manual) ..........TIA !!
 
I wouldn't recommend using at stop lights, but rather when you'd have to depress the brake for longer periods (sitting in traffic, drive-thru, etc).

To use it, hold the brake down, press the auto hold button, release your foot. When ready to go, put your foot back on the brake and hit the button again. It's pretty straightforward.

Really, if you want to have auto hold on, just push the button (you do have to re-enable it on every ignition cycle). You can tell it is ready because there’s a white “auto hold” in your instrument cluster.

Then, any time you come to a complete stop and fully depress the brake pedal, you’ll notice that “auto hold” in the cluster will turn green. When it does that, you can take your foot off the brake, but the car will stay put.

When you’re ready to go, hit the accelerator. That’s it. If at any point during the rest of the drive you decide you don’t need/want auto hold anymore, then push the button again to turn it off.

Be wary that when you turn the car off with auto hold on, the parking brake will automatically be applied. That confuses some people (especially those who don’t routinely set their parking brake).
 
That's spot on for the auto engine shut off (and I may have used the wrong terminology), but I'm referring to the auto brake hold.

Exactly this. I have auto hold on car with a manual transmission. You simply turn the feature on and that's all you have to do. With a manual transmission, it's more useful for preventing the car from rolling back though I've been driving a manual so long I don't need it. You definitely don't need to turn it off to get moving again. The computer engages the rear brakes using the ABS pump.

The only other caveat is, especially with a manual, you can feel it grabbing and releasing. It can be annoying at times.

And that’s why I mentioned you were severely over-complicating the process for auto brake hold. You don’t need to use it the way you described. You can use it the way I described… you don’t need to micromanage it and turn it on and off each time you want it.

Think you want it? Turn it on. It will be used each time you come to a stop. You can follow the system’s function by looking in the instrument cluster.

Don’t care to have it on anymore? Turn it off.

It’s pretty simple. Don’t over-complicate things! 😊

Fortunately, the parking brake is released when you put the car in Drive or Reverse; no separate step to release the parking brake.
 
its not as complicated as it sounds I use it all the time, just hit the button each morning you can do this any time no need to have the foot on the break or anything you can do it when its driving down the road it just enables the feature to be used. When you press the brake and come to a stop you just lift your foot off the break. to go just put your foot on the gas. you don't need to keep pushing the button over and over each time its either on or off. You just need to use it wisely as there are some situations it can be tricky... backing up as example or maneuvering to park where you have to hit the brake often. I would not use it or have it on in these scenarios.

Exactly, which is very nice. It still confuses the hell out of people. I’ve answered so many questions related to that. “Why is my parking brake on??? What’s wrong with my car??” 🤦🏻‍♂️
