Bad Dealer Dealings - List Your Bad Dealer Experience

yeah, this is the first Kia I have ever owned and I wanted the Telluride because I do know a few people who have them and absolutely love them and based on all the reviews I have read and research I have done, it checked mostly all the boxes as far as features go. I scheduled an appointment to go look at the vehicle and test drive it, mind you I have to drive an hour out of my way to look at this vehicle. I get to this dealership and I walk in at my designated time, there was no one there to greet me so I walked into the next room and find a front desk. As I am walking up to it I am stopped by a sales rep and I explain that I had an appointment to look at the Telluride and everything. We go for a test drive and he seemed to be pretty educated about it which was nice so I played along and let him do his thing. During the test drive I knew that this vehicle was probably going home with me. however, I did tell him I wanted the SX in Wolf Gray. The sales rep tells me that this vehicle was the only one on their lot and there is no way for them to get the vehicle due to the shortage that is going on and they don't know what will be coming to their lot or when and they can't do any dealer to dealer trades. Fine. I didn't want to do black again but whatever. Cut to us going over paperwork, the vehicle is MSRP'd at 32k but the paperwork he brought to me stated that it was 46k because of market sales adjustment. I had a huge problem with paying an extra 19k for a base model vehicle. I did however get a 5k discount on the market sales adjustment due to the vehicle not being the trim or color I wanted. I still had an issue with paying the extra 14k and sat there at that dealership for 7 hours and finally got that down to just 7k. I know the sales rep was so annoyed with me by the end of it but damn. I ended up just leasing the vehicle because again, it wasn't what I wanted but I was in need of a reliable vehicle so I felt like I didn't have much choice in the matter. But yeah, 19k over the MSRP is ridiculous. don't let those dealerships fool you when they tell you they can't bring that price down because they definitely did for me.
SOO, who was this & where?? Maybe you listed in an earlier post, but I can't find it. I'm of the opinion that these types of Dealerships, Sales Mgr's, GM's, Finance Mgr's should be specifically called out...by: NAME & LOCATION.
a) as a potential deterrence from continuing these types of horrific practices & maybe even more importantly,
b) to let us know--so we can avoid these places/people like the plague

I wrote a google review of Vanguard Kia describing the great attempted fleecing of 60% over MSRP.

Their response"
"Hi G, thank you for taking time to submit your review. We apologize you feel this way. Vanguard Kia appreciates you and the opportunity to have earned your business!"

Yes the non apology, apology. The tool of sociopaths and car dealerships since the dawn of time.

lol. they do this all the time.

A local dealer had a post on instagram about their Telluride stock. I asked what the markup was. They respond with "they start around 32k!" Completely ignore my question.

More NorCal reports here: Kia of Vacaville, $11,995 over MSRP on all Tellys, and no test drives unless you are signing papers and are serious about buying. The sales dude who was assigned people who pulled up in black cars for the day was nice and apologetic, but the sales manager not so much. I did not stick around long enough to get names (it was about 105 today). Gonna stick closer to Sacramento and fish around.

Dealership : Hilltop Kia
Sales Manager: Raoul Fulcher Jr.

Was super excited today when I was told by Hilltop Kia that my car arrived. When I was signing the paperwork, I was only asked about the down payment and shown just one sheet with the monthly payments. The payments looked high and so I asked for the breakdown. At this point, the they started becoming agitated, brought me the breakdown and I noticed a 4K markup and 3.5% APR. I was shocked and said that over the phone the markup has been mentioned but only for “new orders” but not for existing orders and that I was told it’s 1.9% APR. At this point the salesperson Raoul started saying that he had witnesses that he informed me about the markup in May, 7 months after I placed the order (which to the best of my recollection was that he mentioned is only for new orders, not existing). He took the keys and said he doesn’t want to sell the car to me and started walking away. I was dumbfounded. Then his manager Shawn pitched-in and when I said I’m willing to pay a 2k markup, sold the car to me.

A $4k 10yr 100k extended warranty was also added. I did take the $3k 6yr 75m warranty at my discretion but am thinking about canceling both warranties for better options.

I absolutely love the car but left the dealership feeling cheated.

Anyone waiting on cars from Hilltop Kia, please note that they are going to charge a $4k markup. I believe for vehicles that are not ordered and in their lot it’s 8k.

Let me know if your recent experience was different
I would never have thought that you could enter into an agreement to purchase a car at MSRP and they could just change the price on you.
Especially, after you have waited so long to get your car.
Sorry to hear that happened to you. What should have been a very exciting day obviously turned out pretty rotten.
I just noticed your update. Glad to hear they did the right thing. :-)

On a FWD LX, no less? In a color he didn't want? This is really gonna sting after a good night's sleep.

If you need a car today, the dealer will always have the upper hand, but the Telluride at this point in time is the worst car to buy this way.
Totally agree. Why enable these dealers?

Taylor Kia in Toledo is charging $10k over right now. I’m so confused why people are paying that when Halleen, which is an hour down the road, is selling at MSRP…
Halleen is doing MSRP if you finance with them, if you dont theyre marking them up 5-7K. Had to walk away from one that will be arriving in september because they wouldnt sell to me at MSRP since I had my own financing with my credit union. A real bummer.

Why not finance it with them and then move the loan to your credit union afterwards?

That's good to know - I'm going in for a test drive in a week in a half - definitely something to ask about. Do you know what their rates and terms look like? I plan on refinancing in the spring anyway - so whatever I can do for lower payments from now until then I need to look into.

They were only showing me 75 month terms on the quote they gave me without me handing over my social so they could run my credit. Also said they would send it to multiple options so I could decide what financing I wanted but thats why I already got a rate with my bank.
may be overprotective of my credit score & where I finance but I worked hard to get it to where its at & have loved the experience of financing in the past with my credit union.

That's what I was thinking @ Rockadile.

I’m not that desperate to get a telluride right this second to have my credit ran multiple times & have to deal with refinancing and moving my loan from one place to another. Yes it would have been great if it worked out the way I wanted it to but I can wait until it does. First time buying a brand new car. Im just a cautious person I guess? I started the process a couple months ago researching & trying to find local dealers that sell at least at msrp. A lot of the dealers here wont allow you to place an order yourself, just have to hope one comes in that is what you’re looking for. Luckily I am one of the few that has some solid time to wait/figure that out so for me, id rather wait than jump at the first one that doesnt quite fit everything I’m wanting to do when it comes to completing the car transaction.

Having multiple companies run you credit doesn't really make as much of a difference to credit scores as people think. Unless you're barely above 720, you should be fine. We had 5 inquiry's on our record in the last 6 months and my score dipped from 815 down to 806, but now it's back up at 820.

What's the point of having good credit if you're not using it to get the best rates?

But like I said, if you're close to 720 and you plan on using your credit for other things in the next 6 months then maybe it's not worth doing too many checks.

Yeah WTF did I just read? The world’s most unintentionally hilarious PSA?

“Don’t let those dealers fool you into overpaying,” said the guy who just paid $7k markup on a $32k vehicle. (And leased it, which means they probably bumped the MF for additional profit too).

You can add Global Kia in North Plainfield NJ to the list of markups ($12k on SXP and $9k on others). That’s probably before any massive doc/prep fees and markups in the finance office.

When the website says, “Please call for price”, RUN.

Last weekend @TellurideT and I went to Ron Tonkin Kia in Gladstone, OR. to drive a Telluride. They had two on the lot. They were asking $63,000 for a 2020 SX...

USED with 48,721 miles. Website says $56k.

They have other ridiculous examples on their website. Purchasing from other dealerships and selling 2022s as pre-owned with ~50 miles and asking $66k.

Late last week we briefly (okay, I got to test drive an SXP for quite a few highway miles 🤣) worked with Beaverton Kia in Oregon. They kept telling me how Tellurides were flying off the lot yet when I followed up yesterday (Aug 1) they still had some. I asked if they would negotiate and they said they’d guarantee $6k >MSRP if I went to the dealership right now. “They want this SX gone.”

Apparently not that bad. 🙄

I live in Eastern Washington - visited, called, emailed, web surfed, text, etc. multiple dealers within about a six (6) hour drive from my home address. I became familiar with this form and received a lot of great information from the community. Ironically, despite most dealers tacking on markups, I found that my local dealer (approximately 4.8 miles or twelve [12] minutes away) would sell a factory ordered 21’ AWD SXP/NF/T with black Napa leather in Gravity Gray for MSRP. Seemed crazy. Upon initially contacting the dealer, I did ask for invoice which seemed to upset the crusty old sales manager who apparently tells customers who are looking for invoice ”to go somewhere else”. Whatever. I specked out my car to my liking with no additional add-ons to include the crappy over priced carpet floor mats (retailed for $210 + sales tax of 8.6%). My order took place on October 9th, 2020 with $1,000 refundable deposit. Other than the slight back and forth about invoice, my experience was decent. Over the months of waiting I made it a routine to do a monthly email/call to the dealer for a status check. A lot of unknown feedback and “you’re closer now on the list”. Fast forward to June 7th 2021, got a call from the crusty old sales manager who told my wife and I our order was in production with an ETA July 12th, 2021, and sent us the sticker. Everything looked good except a charge of $210 for carpet floor mats. I figured I’d keep quite until in-person and ready to pickup with a check in hand. A few days before July 12, I was told it was in transit. Fast forward to July 18th 2021 - still no car or at least the dealer never called to advise that the car was on the lot. So my family and I happen to drive by the dealer to see if our car arrived that day and sure enough, it was there. The crusty old man swore he’d call me when it was on the lot. With an hour before closing, a different sales rep made contact and didn’t necessarily believe me when I said “that‘s my car“ upon approaching me. I guess he took it as a joke? Anyway, the rep goes in to talk with the crusty old man, got the keys so I could see it but advised it would need to be inspected and detailed which wouldn’t be for another day or so. Okay, understood but a little frustrated that I didn’t get a courtesy call acknowledging the situation and I found out myself. On July 20th, 2021, my wife and I are housed in the hospital with a new born baby. Hours before discharge, I am notified that the vehicle is ready. After 9.5 months of waiting and knowing the next few days ahead were going to be chaos, I made arrangements to pickup the vehicle. I arrived early afternoon and the first thing was a quick test drive which is when I first made the comment about the carpet floor mats would need to be removed from the purchase. My rep pushed it aside. Got back to the office, sat down for paper work, and further emphasized that the initial order did not include carpet floor mats and nor did I want them. So my rep goes to his crusty old sales manager…few minutes went by and before my rep really said much I requested to talk to the manager. That is where my bad experience really started. I expressed that I did not agree to the $210 charge nor did I want that crappy overpriced product. I requested some sort of credit (removal of floor mats, service credit, etc.). Crusty Old Man naturally wouldn’t budge, he’s the classic hard nosed sleazy sales manager that customers shouldn’t have to experience. Anyhow, the sales manager goes on to explain that he couldn’t do anything since it was on the sticker and I am paying MSRP. He also brings up the fact that I asked for invoice…about 10 months prior. Okay, really we were way past that or at least I thought. In fact, this guy decides to flip the table, playing the nice guy who has regrets of being a nice guy and expressing that he shouldn’t have thought of me and pulled this car that matched closest to my build. OH! And if I don’t want the floor mats then I can get back into line with the exact build. He was astonished that I was arguing within him about $210 which were carpet floor mats. It wasn’t the cost nor the product at this point. It was about what I agreed to as a customer who waited 9.5 months and my hard earned $1,000 deposit in their hands the whole time. It was about integrity, honor, and good faith business. I even emphasized I had previously ordered WT HP floor mats ($300 worth) and they were in hand ready to be installed. No care in the world. There was another sales manager in the room, he decided to chime in at one point with “you know what other dealers are charging“. These guys have missed the freaking point. After a moment of silence and staring right at the crusty old man, I decided my valuable time wasn’t worth the effort to argue with this idiot. My hourly wage is worth more and he wasn’t going to retreat. So I ended up asking for them to draft up the purchase for a cash purchase, and I ended up eating the cost on the carpet floor mats. Felt great to slap down a check with the full amount right out of savings especially since I was pissed off - I just wanted to be done. Next, the crusty old man hands me a paper with a breakdown of the purchase at which I did not see my $1,000 applied to it so I called that out. After that, I went to their finance office where they attempt to sell all the other crap with the vehicle. I knew about the Muncie Extended Warranty so I nicely said I wasn’t interested in any of their additions other than the Extended Warranty if they could match - they couldn’t. So I declined and the finance gal was a little shocked at the price I quoted. Their quote was about $200 over Muncie plus 8.6% tax. I am pending a response back to Craig’s request for purchase.

After I finalized all the information, I had the car in hand on time to pick up my wife and new baby girl from the hospital. But before I did, I yanked out the carpet floor mats outside in the main parking lot of my local dealer and installed my well fitted WT HP floor liners that help compliment the nice interior. My wife thought I was being ridiculous when I told her my experience and others may too. But whatever, it wasn’t about the cost or product but much more and deeper than that. As representatives of Kia, the brand should be ashamed of this office in not honoring my initial purchase order. In the order, I agreed to their stupid negotiable document fee and MSRP price increases which there were at least two (2) that I know of between the time I ordered and delivered. I had no issues with those. And they couldn’t work with me on fixing the $210 charge for an add-on product. The reasons above is why I have decided to post this under the Bad Dealer Experience.

What are your thoughts? Is this ridiculous on my part or the local dealer? Critical feedback welcome by all means.

Certain items may be added at the factory and are out of dealer control. They have to sell you what's on the sticker. I got wheel locks I don't want, some people got mats or other minor fluff. It's annoying, but I don't see arguing about it with a guy who had nothing to do with it. He would have to eat the cost, on a car he's selling to you under market value already.

Not really a bad dealership but a dealership that feels it has enough business. Before we really knew what we were getting into with the Telly buying process/insane markups, we saw 5 Telluride SX’s listed for sale on Ron Bouchard of Lancaster, MA website. It’s an hour away from Boston so my wife and I decided to take a ride.

We pull up and ask to take one of the Telly’s for a test drive. The salesperson, Jason, says that all of those Telly’s that were listed on the website have been sold and he doesn’t know why the glitch keeps happening. He did, however, say that there was an EX available to look at “but the person who just test drove it is probably going to buy it and there is a 12-16 month waiting list to get on the waiting list”. He didn’t even take our contact info! He thanked us for coming in.

So now that we knew what the process entailed, I started calling local dealerships. Spoke with Ken Russian at Lev Kia in Framingham, MA and he immediately said it would be a 10 month wait for an order on an SX with NF pkg at MSRP subject to customer test drive and a 500 dollar refundable deposit. There was no BS, no markups. The experience with Lev Kia has been on the up and up thus far and is always subject to change but I am willing to stay loyal to them since Ken clearly stated he wanted to earn our business by not charging over MSRP.

In conclusion, the folks at Ron Bouchard didn’t seem to want any more business than they already have and have Telly’s listed in their website that are not even available 🤷🏻‍♂️
