Bad Dealer Dealings - List Your Bad Dealer Experience

I went to Motion very early in my search (mid 2019) before I was actually ready to buy. In those early days they were willing to order at MSRP. Too bad they jumped on the greed bandwagon. Worse, at $7,000, they’ve increased their markups.

Take a ride to Nutley.
That was exactly my thought as well. I knew some folks had luck getting them for MSRP in the past, from Motion, so I figured I would try them and when they said $7,000 markup I was honestly floored. I may try giving Nutley a call tomorrow afternoon. I currently have two other options that are offering them at MSRP still. That being Murray and Abeloff in PA.

Murray quoted me about 10-12 months for an SX though which is a super long time. By then we are talking 2023 models.

I25 in Colorado is quicker but you’ll have to pay delivery. It’s at msrp though

Did you end up ordering with Puyallup? I’ve got an appointment scheduled soon.
Sorry about the delayed reply. Yes, i did end up ordering SX Nightfall Ebony Black with Black int on Sep 1. Not exactly sure when i would get the vehicle, initial estimate provided was 9 months.

Taylor Kia in Toledo is charging $10k over right now. I’m so confused why people are paying that when Halleen, which is an hour down the road, is selling at MSRP…
If I didn't do a bit of research and make a few calls I wouldn't have learned this. We had a bad experience at Taylor, the sales rep was apathetic and barely engaged on the conversation of ordering, just wanted to sell us the used one he had on the lot. Picked up the phone and made some calls and found Halleen and their pricing at MSRP. Got one ordered the same day.

Halleen is doing MSRP if you finance with them, if you dont theyre marking them up 5-7K. Had to walk away from one that will be arriving in september because they wouldnt sell to me at MSRP since I had my own financing with my credit union. A real bummer.
I just ordered from Halleen yesterday, cash deal, priced at MSRP

Been shopping for Telluride for a couple weeks in Colorado. About to pull the plug on an order with either Arapahoe or I25 KIA (Both awesome to work with so far) here in Colorado.

Bad dealer: Phil Long KIA in Colorado Springs called me to follow up on a website inquiry. Offered me an S and an EX both with an approximate 10k markup (She wouldn’t give me the MSRP price on them claiming she had no other info or VIN just a price with market adjustment). I don’t remember the S price but the EX Premium with nightfall was 59k 😮 When I said no thanks, I have two local dealers offering to order at MSRP with a approximate 4 month wait, sales lady became unprofessionally rude telling me it was a 23-24 month wait for a order on a EX or S Trim and there was no way I could get one that soon. I clarified thinking she may have said 3-4 months but was not the case. I was told, “Good luck with that” and hung up. Felt like she straight up lied in a last ditch effort to get me to buy from them. I hadn’t made an order yet, she could have offered the same deal and sold me on why they were the better dealer.

I ended up ordering with Jim at Arapahoe KIA.(Choose them over I25 only because they are 15 minutes from my house and they provided our first test drive, treating us well and upfront. ) Jim assured me no mark ups on arrival, up front with a dealer processing fee, not going to sell it out from under me. He explained the process and time line which matched everything I read here. Further he talked to me in length on how to get the most for our trade even if it wasn’t trading it in at his dealership. 👍🏼 Hopefully I will be posting more in the “Good Section” about them this spring.

Stay away from Brody at peak kia in Colorado if you’re not willing to pay over sticker. He was friendly on the phone and told me they would basically take my name and put in an order for me with no deposit. When I asked what the markup was he said he couldn’t tell me because it changed every day. So when I asked for an average he said somewhere between 5k to 7.5k. I declined to order. A few days later he says the exact car I want has come in but it’s 7.5k over and they won’t allow me to have it shipped and that if I’m willing to come in we could discuss price. Being from NY that was never an option so I told him no thanks. Some people have said they got something at sticker from them so when I asked him if he would sell at sticker he said they’ve never sold a telluride at sticker in the past 3 years. When I told him others have gotten sticker at his dealership (from what I’ve read on this forum) he basically told me that’s not possible and that everyone is lying. Needless to say, we moved on

Buying a new car has a whole bunch of psychology involved. These salespeople actually go to classes and learn how to take advantage of each scenario that would come up in a possible sale. The buyer is either weak or strong in how the transaction occurs. The weak are lured in to make a deal that sounds good at the time and they rationalize that they "need to buy the car" and that the deal is acceptable. The strong will have done their homework before they even walk into a dealership and use that knowledge to negotiate a fair deal for both buyer and seller. The strong know when to walk away. The dealers actually prefer the strong to walk away and make room for the weak buyer to come in. I kind of fell in the middle on my recent deal. I rationalized that because I got a great deal on my last 2016 Cruze Premier, that it would be OK to take a hit on this 2022 Telluride and it would basically even out. This is the first car in my life (out of 10 new cars purchased since 1987) that I ever paid over MSRP. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth that I failed in my negotiation and let the dealer win. I figured that the dealer made about $15k profit off my trade in and the sale of the Kia Telluride at 7k over sticker. Buying a used car is an even tougher negotiation.

I'm sure this isn't the first time they've been mentioned, but Ron Tonkin Kia in Gladstone, Oregon was asking 65k for an SX Nightfall. I told them I could get an X5 for that price and to let me know when they get back down near MSRP.

Sales guy told me they've never sold for MSRP and probably never will. :ROFLMAO:

Thanks to this forum for pointing me toward I-25 Kia (now Fowler). Ordered an SX Nightfall for MSRP + $695. Will make the road trip to Colorado in the spring and drive it back!

I went from having the absolute worst car buying experience at Oaks Kia in Kansas City to the best at Bob Sight Kia in Independence Missouri. Once Oaks learned I wasn’t interested in buying their extended warranty or maintenance plan they told me they weren’t interested in selling me a vehicle. I called Bob Sight and ended up with an SX at MSRP and no pressure to purchase anything additional.

Camelback Kia in Phoenix, AZ sucked. A lot of attitude...wouldn't be straight with me on the price, then told me no dealer is doing MSRP and they must be hiding something. Seriously, the sales manager was straight up rude.

I got my Telly from Royal Kia, Tucson, AZ (Gil was my sales guy) and he and they were awesome.

No markup.

Don’t go to Kearny Mesa Kia in San Diego. Internet sales contacted me via text about available Telluride. Told them I was looking for EX at MSRP. Guy said haven’t been at that price for last 2 years. I said I can wait and thanked him. He replied that he will contact me in a year, then permanently blocked me. I guess they block you if you don’t pay what they want.

Kia of Orland in Illinois only showing MSRP on Cars.com so I called them and asked them what their mark up was. He said they don't give the markup over the phone because it's their policy but "come on down and take a test drive" I told them if they can't be transparent over the phone or advertise their "actual selling price" on Cars.com then no thanks. I told them that is shady practicing and bait and switch. Not driving 92 miles out of my way to get the run around. Also told them I ordered one for MSRP in Dubuque and they need to start following suit.

Good for you. It's unfortunate, but there are some scumbag dealers out there that have no regard for their (potential?) customers.

Left a negative Yelp review (with screenshot of text messages) and now they falsely accuse me of hounding them for 2 years asking to pay MSRP. Only started to look for a car 2 weeks ago and this was first contact I had with them. I’ve contacted many dealerships and everyone has been professional except Kearny Mesa Kia. And it looks like they removed my text screenshot claiming privacy.

I'm actually getting mine this week. Dealer has got the vehicle on 26th but due to the bad weather here didnt get a chance to visit the showroom to pick it up.

This order was not mine, but the person before who ordered the same package as mine didn't want the vehicle so i got an option to take this one. The only difference was the exterior color. I ordered for SX Night fall in ebony black with black interior. The one i'm getting now is white exterior. White was my second option so i was good with that.

Hopefully i'll get to pick it up this weekend.

I ordered one mid September from Jake Sweeney in Florence Ky. Was told 6-8 weeks but I was a novice and didn’t ask from what to what. Anyway I’m not in a hurry and some have waited a really long time. I ordered the SX awd prestige nightfall with towing and Dune Napa leather. Price including destination was $51k and the sales manager signed the order indicating that was the price. They have been responsive to my couple inquiries. So far I’m not in the hopper yet. I saw a 21 Telly in the grocery store parking lot. It was very nice, the design, the wheels, the paint. Good luck everyone!
I ordered mine end of July from Sweeney. I was told 6-9 weeks as well. Mine still has not been picked up. It is now 5 months from order. I'm not sure how they can tell people 6-9 weeks when obviously this is not the case. I'm not saying the long wait time is their fault...but it hurts a bit more when my expectations of 6-9 weeks are not being met. All communication is simply that they have no information on when it will be picked up. Ours was supposed to be next in line 8 weeks ago...which must mean that maybe all the ones in line ahead of us with Sweeney had been picked up at that point. Maybe it has to do with what I ordered...White SX FWD/butterscotch/towing. I know that Butterscotch is not the most common interior color, so maybe that is the hold up. Just don't let your hopes get too high. You may be waiting longer than expected. Since I've waited this long, it's hard to talk myself into placing a new order with someone else.

When I went looking for a Telluride, I usually order my cars and wait. I just happened to find what I wanted on the showroom floor and made the deal. Paying that $7000 over MSRP is still annoying me 2 months later.

Wow that is so fantastic! Can’t wait to see pictures. Also, would love to hear how your purchase experience with them went. I don’t want any run around.
