Telling this story in case anyone else might run into this situation = this info may be helpful to have in your hip pocket.
A couple months ago, in September, several of my Telluride's systems stop working. Specifically, the Smart Cruise Control, the Lane Keep Assist, the Forward Collision Avoidance, the auto High Beams, etc. Basically anything that required the camera that sits behind the front rear view mirror was not working. I took it to the dealer and they immediatly determined the camera was bad, so they ordered a new one. After a week and a half, the new camera was received, so I took the car in and they replaced it. Unfortunately, this did not fix the issue - in fact more systems were now having issues. At this point the dealer's mechanic was convinced that Kia had sent him a "bad" camera, so he ordered a second new camera.
When they replaced the second camera, I was hopeful that this would fix the problem, but no joy - still getting all kinds of codes and many systems not working. This time, the mechanic thought there might be a wiring issue - thinking rodents might have chewed through some wires, but after a thorough inspection of all the wiring, no problems found there. Then he thought one of the radar sensors was at fault, so ordered a new sensor. After another two weeks wait they got the new sensor it, but this time I told them to keep the car for a few days until they were sure what the issue was.
Well, today is Christmas Eve and I just picked up the car and everything is working. Turns out they didn't need to put that new sensor in after all. After consulting with Kia HQ, it turns out that the new cameras they were receiving from KIA were not properly programmed for my car. All they had to do was enter the correct ROM code to program the camera for my specific vehicle and viola! Everything now works as it should.
I'm telling this in case any of you ever have a similar multi-system failure that seems tied to the front camera, you can remind the techician to make sure the new camera they install has the correct ROM. If they tell you KIA sends the right one based on VIN, remind them if this story in which the camera was replaced twice because the cameras they received were NOT programed for the intended vehicle. Hope this is helpful to someone down the line.
