Hi, I have a question for all prospective Telluride buyers. I had almost made up my mind to buy a Telluride but my co-worker asked me how many years has been since Telluride was launched? I said 2019. He then asked are you willing to pay 50k on a car which hasn't had user feedback for even 5 years? I had no idea how to answer him and this made me explore other options - known brands like Toyota & Honda. Then I have this scary link and the horror stories here :
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiC5JjX2t35AhWlBjQIHQwgBEQ4ChAWegQIFxAB&url=https://www.facebook.com/groups/432208147570999/&usg=AOvVaw3hb8A1UGMiWNqi02BGT_Uw . I know Kia offers great warranty but what good is it if folks have their cars at dealers waiting for parts to be available. I have never heard anything like this for Honda or Toyota. So the question is wouldn't it be better to let Kia Telluride be an established brand like Honda/Toyota Pilot/Highlander and then be ready to spend that much?
Anything is possible that these cars have catastrophic failure at 10 years. However, now that we have people with 100,000+ miles on these vehicles, these problems would theoretically show up. The engine is from Hyundai/Kia/Genesis V6 Lambda program, which has been in production since '05 in the 3.8L size. Current Lambda II engine is used in the
Palisade and Telluride.
Reliability is a very anecdotal metric. If you are seeking to find information about failures, trust me, all of the OEM's have their horror stories. It's the nature of manufacturing.
Toyota and Honda's are great. No doubt. If you want something that has years of production under the same name plate, sure, you can do a Highlander or Pilot. Look at the designs and development of those vehicles. 20 year old Highlanders and Pilots don't use the same frames, engines, transmissions, etc. as they do today. They have quality built in because that's what the engineering demands. Are Hyundai/Kia Honda or Toyota? Probably not. Are they trending in that direction? Probably. Is the value, for Hyundai/Kia, to price attractive for many vs a Honda or Toyota, yes, I believe so. That is why the waiting list is so long for a Telluride. It's hard to beat the value proposition of a Telluride in the market.
As far as your comment on waiting for parts to be available. Welcome to pandemic automotive. Welcome to supply chain melt downs. Welcome to customer demand so high for all OEM's they can't produce enough. All OEM's have this problem right now. I'm sure with enough digging you can find the same horror stories for any OEM.
If you plan to drive your car for 300,000 miles and want as few problems as possible and like the Pilot or Highlander, jump in. Great vehicles. You will likely experience fewer problems by the metrics. Being in automotive manufacturing, I feel very comfortable with Hyundai/Kia's quality control and have no concerns placing my order once the 23's release.
Best of luck, whichever decision you make. Cars today are built so well to keep you safe and on the road compared to years gone by. You won't go wrong either way.
