If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... My 2020 Telluride has 62k miles and has received regular oil changes. It just recently started to feel like it was going to stall when I came to a stop. Shortly afterwards it started making a weird noise. No odors, no warning lights displayed. My husband decided to check the oil and it was literally dry. He had to add 4 quarts of oil before it even touched the dip stick. We have an appointment with the dealership in a week, but I’m afraid that they are going to blame this on not getting the vehicle serviced on a regular basis or that nothing is wrong with it. My biggest concern is the fact that the check engine light never came on which could have posed a serious risk to the vehicle or myself. I’d love to know if anyone has experienced similar issues.

Welcome. Just letting you know that I moved this topic out of the community lounge and into the main Kia Telluride forum...

My 2020 with 39k miles has the same issue, burned 4 qts of oil in 4500 miles since last oil change. It also started to mark a loud tapping noise when accelerating (coming from the engine) and most noticeable when moving from a stop. Dealer has documented this and did some diagnostic. It is now awaiting a new engine, which was approved by Kia. Don’t know how long it will take, but I am happy with my dealership advocating for me and appreciative that Kia is doing the right thing for me. It had regular oil changes. I think I may go with a 5k oil change interval with the new engine as I think Kia has a history of engine issues (mostly with other models but it is still reflective of a possible supplier issue, build quality, or design issue).

My 2020 Telluride has had normal oil changes and maintenance since we purchased it new. 2 times now we have experienced an issue with oil consumption. Both times the same thing happened, loss of power The first time the engine warning light came on, it need 5.5 quarts of oil. The second time loss of power but no warning light. We pulled over and had to add 5.5 quarts of oil.
The dealership said this is normal consumption based on what Kia says, then why wouldn’t this happen every time between oil changes if it’s normal? Never in my 60+ years have I had a vehicle use oil in this way. My concern is that damage has been done to our engine!
We have an appointment this week to do an oil consumption test, we shall see.

We have had the same issue with ours, this is the second time, had to put 5.5 quarts in it! I have the oil changed regularly, this second time no warning light came on. I’m afraid that it has damaged the engine.

I am currently experiencing this same problem with my 2020 Telluride. Kia Corporate is now involved but I was told it will takes weeks to months for corporate to step in and handle the case and that I am responsible for paying for my own rental. How long did the process take for you?

Glad to hear Kia will stand by their warranty! This also points us to the importance of checking the oil level periodically. I do this every couple of weeks and before I travel far from home to avoid being stranded and or having to wait for weeks for repair which throws our summer/fall schedule. Leaving this routine checks to a mechanic or the dealership is sometimes too little, too late as some of us here have experienced. Also easy DIY checks are the condition of tires. I have the habit to check them when I'm waiting while filling gas--I just do a quick 30 sec check for each tire looking for bulges, uneven wear, or worse, a crack on the side wall. In my more than 30 years of driving, I caught a few embedded nails (while filling gas) that would have stranded my family on our summer/fall trips. All fluids must be topped off from time to time which our mechanics do as part of routine maintenance. Unfortunately, stuff happen in between maintenance. Keeping an eye on fluids and tire conditions is a good preventative maintenance that are easy DIY. We don't even have to do it ourselves as long as we report them to our mechanics. That is, if we don't have to leave in a hurry for that summer trip. But that's really the point of preventive maintenance-it enables us to have time to fix the issues before they happen.Thanks.

I also have this issue with my kia telluride. The dealership is saying its normal to consume 1qt/1,000 miles but at 4,500 my dipstick is dry and iIm +5 quarts low. This is outrageous and Kia dealership is just documenting it until it completely fails. Its bs and it hurts Kia's reputation.

I am having the same problem. Dropped off my 2020 Telluride on June 19th with 64,000 miles on it. It was making a noise and running ruff. After several issues (calling the extended warranty people which wasn’t needed and my name spelled wrong in their system) and a couple of weeks they finally pulled the cover and no oil or sludge. July 13th I got the news that Kia is replacing the engine. July 17th I called corporate and they told me they would cover a rental up to $45.50 a day but I had to pay and be reimbursed. Yesterday, August 3rd my service advisor called to tell me they were going to set up a rental thru enterprise and they were paying. Evidently the engine is on back order. I really don’t see this ending anytime soon for me. At least I can send them the current rental invoice and no longer paying for the rental. Good luck with getting your issue resolved.

With so many posts mentioning a fair amount of oil consumption....are there any Telly owners out there with some mileage on the clock that use minimum oil or don't add between oil changes?

I would be surprised if the overwhelming majority of Telluride owners didn't go between oil changes without having to add any oil. What you see here on the forum is the 1 percenters. Ones with no issues don't post. And figure that there have been upwards of 3-400,000 Tellys built since they came on the scene. I've got almost a 1000 miles and haven't used a drop.
I intend to change oil frequently, before recommended intervals, use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, and swap out my drain plug with a highly magnetized one.

As Tellme mentions, I would think that with the 3.8 L Lambda II GDi V6 the most important maintenance that owners should be adhering to are regular oil changes with a premium synthetic oil. Considering that the Telly engine uses direct injection as most newer cars do now, the oil will have a tendency to get diluted which in turn inhibits the lubricating properties of the major components of the engine. Carbon build up is another topic The " highly magnetized drain plug" is a great idea as well! I believe that Kia's 7,500 miles oil change recommendation is too long as I would not go any more than 5,000 miles if not sooner. I understand that today's engines are using more oil that those of the past, but being proactive is the owner's best tool with regular oil changes, and all maintenance items when scheduled. As owners should be aware of oil consumption, oil should be checked often. As the average owner is probably not aware of oil usage, this is where major engine problems arise. One can't depend upon the "oil idiot light" to alert of low oil.

My issue has to do with the piston rings. Took it in on 6/19. Still waiting on an engine as they are on back order. The Kia dealership that my Telluride is at is currently waiting on 3 Telluride engines, all under warranty.

How often did you change your oil? Synthetic?

I am never that low and get my oil changed every 7500 miles. I might add a 1/2 quart at around 3500 miles but that's it.

37,050 as of today
