Oil Filter Housing

i am now chasing a leak in the vicinity of the oil filter housing...wiped it clean and am going to take another look...i may be in the market for a new housing as well...i'm just having a hard time telling if the oil is coming from the filter cap, the housing to engine seal or the oil pan gasket...had oil on the inside of the plastic mud guard, dripping from the oil pan bolts, dripping from the filter cap lip as well as higher than that...i just don't know what the air flow is doing to things down there and i couldn't find a clear location that it could be coming from but good to know that it's 15 ft*lbs of torque for the 4 housing bolts...i may just pick one up as a backup...for pricing i'm seeing:

Filter Assembly
26300-3LAA0
$63.82 (34.2% off)

Filter Assembly Seal
26345-3LAA0
$5.79 (34.5% off)

Have the dealer replace it under warranty

Thats what I was worried about. Getting hassled by the dealer as I do all of my own oil changes. Plus I didn’t want to waste multiple trips to the dealer plus waiting for them to fix it. So i just paid out of pocket and replaced it myself. It even comes with a new filter. Small price to pay vs. getting the run around by the dealers and wasting your time.

they will probably blame it on my fumoto valve
i have one of those to. I made an appointment to have they look at the leak, dropped it off on a Sunday to have they look at it on Monday. Around 9am I get a text stating my vehicle is ready and that they replaced the oil filter housing under warranty. I do all my own oil changes and they took care it quickly.

What year is your Telluride and how many miles? My 2020 with 97k miles seems to have this same issue so it's highly unlikely it will be covered under warranty but I'm going to argue with my dealer and show them this forum to point out all the other owner's having the exact same issue.

Got under it today…snowing here at the moment…seems to leak worse in the cold weather probably due to the seal shrinking in the cold…definitely the oil filter housing to engine connection…I think the seals on these housings are going to need to be replaced every 30k miles or so…awful design…will be calling the dealer to get them to replace it along with the housing…I would imagine if the plastic is in good shape I could just replace the $6 seal myself but I’ll let them do it and then put it on ramps when it’s done and check it

It’s not a bad job at all, took me an hour including the oil change. Pulled the wheel, removed the one plastic button holding the inner fender and was able to bend it out of the way.

Thanks again for the help.
Did you find torque specs for the bolts that hold the housing to the motor?

Maybe a dumb question, but it might be worth trying to add some silicone rtv. I mean, making your own gasket (or adding to the OEM one, which apparently sucks) ought to last more than 30K.

i don't disagree but its warranty work at this point...when i'm out of warranty and i have to buy the parts myself i will just buy a new $5 seal if the plastic housing is not cracked and replace that and maybe RTV it as well...but while it's under warranty i'll have them do it so they can't void my warranty

Used the Klick socket today and it was worth every penny. Took the setting of the torque wrench correctly out of the equation and simplified it.

Do not use silicone rtv. Oil filter housing gaskets are Viton material. Use clean engine oil on gaskets and torque bolts to 15 FT. LBS.

so i brought our '22 with 37k miles into the local kia dealer for a leak either higher on the oil filter housing or on the seal between the engine and the housing (which is what i suspect)...all i know is the source is higher than the pan or the filter cap due to where i can see oil...i wiped it clean and had a hard time establishing the exact source of the leak...i suspect it's temperature dependent...cold outside park it in the garage where it's insulated and then it leaks or when it cools it leaks...it's not consistent...when i talked to the dealer right off the bat tells me they charge a $130 if anything has been modified...the only things i have are a fumoto oil plug valve and the autostop eliminator...dealer took it for a drive a few times and could not reproduce the leak and said everything is in good working order...but they wanted to charge me the $130 for the fumoto valve cause they consider it a modification even though they did nothing aside from top off the oil (was midway on the dipstick when i brought it in)...they ended up not charging me and said not to bring it in with it installed or they will have to charge me (in my head i read that as ok so basically i won't be coming back to this dealer)...they also never reinstalled the plastic shield and bolts...just left it all in the back of the car...is this "modification charge" consistent across all kia dealers?...i feel like i'm going to have to call a dealer and ask ahead of time while blocking my phone number to see if they are going to charge me this fee prior to making an appointment...or just do everything myself (like i will with this issue) or have my local mechanic do it

i'm thinking of replacing just the $6 seal between the housing and the engine and see how it goes

Senator20 - from what I can see, the Klick socket is preset at 25Nm and the Kia filter housing calls for 35Nm torgue settings. Did you do anything to compensate for this difference?

Them leaving the plastic shield in the back of the car is a completely prick move and totally unacceptable. I would never go back there and I would complain on Yelp or whatever about that.

my wife can handle that...it's her car...i'll just buy the gasket and replace it next oil change...dealers suck...kia dealers more so cause they try to screw you on anything they can...i basically just confirmed my thoughts about kia dealers...i think this particular dealer wanted to charge us $10k over msrp when we were car shopping...if this car doesn't make over 200k miles without too many repairs it will be the last kia we ever own...my next vehicle will not be a kia/hyundai...toyota, honda, mazda and maybe subaru only for me...my current '13 subaru legacy has 230k miles...the biggest thing i had to do was the valve body replacement due to a bad solenoid...other than that just spark plugs, serpentine belt, idler pulley, both O2 sensors, catalytic converter, pcv valve, rear struts, brakes, tires, battery and oil changes...aside from brakes, tires and the cat i did the rest of the maintenance myself...and a good amount of those items i did within the past 3 years to kick the car down the road after we bought the fully loaded sx that is now leaking oil...never had a leak with my subaru and also running a fumoto valve...but it is guzzling oil at a rate of 1 qt/600 miles at this point so it needs a new engine...but for $8-$9/qt at say 86 mi/day at say 3 days a week at 52 weeks a year at about 600 miles per quart is about $200/year...may as well run it till it dies or at least try to make it till we pay off the telluride in 2027 (never going to make it) to try and limit the amount of overlapping car payments

Are you sure it says 35nm?
It is molded into the oil filter housing - you can see it in the youtube video linked above showing how to change the oil (I realize you know full well how to do that, just mentioning the video as it has a clear shot of the filter housing).
