• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... The dealership called yesterday and asked for a big favor. They asked if I could bring in our Black Copper SXP because some potential customers wanted to see one. I said yes because I wanted them to take a look at the paint protection film we had added as it was applied poorly. (My wife and I had talked about going to the dealership for this issue earlier in the day)

As we pulled up they asked to park in front of the front door as a salesman and his customer came out. They asked a few questions of me before going into the dealership.

After a while they asked me more questions and I offered them a ride. I wasn’t allowing them to drive my vehicle but they could get a good feel for how it went through the paces. This happened for another customer who also came in while we were there. I know both customers will be a Telluride owner after their ride/talk.

Question: what is this worth? While they will be fixing the issue and doing an oil change, I’m thinking we should get a kickback like the $50 customer referral that they give out.
Thoughts?

I think it’s reasonable that you should get some sort of compensation for your time. Even if they give you a steep discount on an accessory or free service.

That was very nice of you to do that.

Honestly if they both buy you should get much more than $50. At least a few accessories for free and a couple of oil changes. Because of you they may have sold two loaded SXP’s that’s almost 100k in sales.

I think the good karma is worth more than money. I've helped hundreds of people purchase cars, you know widows and orphans LOL, I always listen to what there needs are. I memorized "Consumers Reports" frequency of repair records for most cars. Dealers have tried to give me a commission or gift and I have refused, why you ask? simple, I advocate for the buyer and beat them up for the best price, terms of finance and no service contracts. I bring my own Mobil 1 for my oil changes.

It is worth whatever the two of you agreed upon up front, which sounds like nothing.

Question.. I'm deciding between the dark moss and the black copper.. since the dealers around here don't have an awesome person like you, I have no idea if the black copper has that purplish tint or of that's Photoshop. Can you share your take and or pictures?

Oh and you should get something which reasonably should have been offered prior to you taking their customers for test drives.

In the black copper forum of this website, some have taken some pretty good pictures of the color combo. It doesn’t look purple at all but it’s n strong sunlight you can see the brown copper flecks of paint.

^^^^This mainly - especially in this situation since you already had to go into the dealership. Building a good relationship with the dealer will most likely pay dividends long term as long as the same people stay employees and remember you. Kind of the old "you catch more bees with honey than vinegar" thing.

I don't feel that there is anything wrong with asking for the referral fee if they purchase since you helped them out. If that is something they offer and you helped close the deal they really should not have issue with it. I feel that if you ask for anything above and beyond that, unless you specifically went out of your way, you will be working against the good karma that @ibmax referenced.

True!
I will say that the owner of the dealership (and he owns more than one), came up to me and personally thanked me for helping them out. As others indicated, if I didn’t negotiate something up front, don’t expect anything after the fact. True. This dealership has been fair with me in my first purchase from them and that the Karma thing is also good will for helping another buyer.

I will also say, each of the other customers asked what other vehicles we tried before landing on the Telluride. When I listed them off, it matched what they had already looked at.

Bird dogs get 100 bucks if the other person buys

I thik 50 per customer is reasonable co sidering the time you spent
