Forward Collision Avoidance Assist - Radar Blocked;

Hi Everyone,

After fighting this problem for two years since the day my Telluride was new (2022), I thought I'd ask others on this forum for some help; 2 dealerships are not able to figure this out. While driving approximately 3 car lengths behind someone and going the exact speed as the vehicle in front me, the following message mayl pop up on my display:

Foward Collision - Avoidance Assist (FCA) system Disabled.
Radar blocked.

I say "may" because it happens sporadically.

There is nothing blocking the radar. After about 5 min, the message will go ahead. If I happen to be using cruise control, then I get this message:

Smart Cruise Ctrl, conditions not met

This disables the cruise control.

Two different dealerships said they cannot help because no codes/message are found when they hook up their obd2 scanner. I was told to drive around...and when it comes on, quickly drive back to show them. One dealership kept the car for a full week and could determine the issue.

It was suggested that I buy my own obd2 scanner...so I purchased Motopower Mp69033. I kept it hooked up to my telluride. I was making a 200 mile trip and wanted to see what error I could get. I got the blocked radar message 9 times during that trip, but no codes showed up. It seems the device that's causing the issue in my car is not sending an error code of some kind. Would replacing the radar sensor correct it? Has anyone else had this issue? Maybe someone had, but I did not pick it up while searching for it.

If it’s telling you the radar is blocked when it isn’t (normal reasons for blockage would be snow, sleet, heavy rain, physically blocked by something else like an overhanging license plate or object), then it’s likely the plate itself or the bracket are misaligned, bent, or broken. That should be the first thing to check.

Here’s one instance someone had.

You’d think the dealer would be able to figure it out. If it’s bent, even a little, it can be okay until it isn’t.

Definitely have them check to make sure nothing is bent or misaligned.

There have been other posts here on this forum about such tings. Bending plates back to appropriate angles and reprogramming the radar sensor can fix the problem.

FCA Error - Radar Disabled

As a general time of thumb, don’t use smart cruise control or rely on the FCA systems where there is any precipitation. I'm fine with that, but the system should disable itself in those conditions if it can't work reliably, particularly the SCC.

I finally got a hold of the dealership owner and he told the service department not to release the car until a fix had bee found. the whole thing turned out to be the front radar not adjusted properly at the factory. it was pointing up too far.

I have a 2021 Telluride and it has been doing the "Forward Collision - Avoidance Assist (FCA) system disabled. Radar blocked"
intermittently for over a year now. Dealership service tech simply said it needed to be recalibrated but they did not have the tool to do it. The dealership that had one that could do it is 45 mins away on the other side of town... But it sounds like that is NOT the right fix based on these examples.

In my case with the warning message Fca system disabled radar blocked from day one of receiving my 2021 telluride sx I knew it was not something I did. But if it happens months later it could be a bent radar sensor bracket after striking a sidewalk when parking or installing something in the front radar sensor cover. I drive in downpours in Florida and my car followed and adjusted speed and distance well while in cruse control.everything is working fine on my telluride. I still get the occasional recall between oil changes all covered under warranty.

I had a similar problem with my 2021 Telluride. After several trips to a dealership when they were about to order a new camera, the service technician realigned the FCA camera and the problem was corrected. I have had no problems with system since then.

I see this is an old post, but I wanted to ask a question. I have had the same issue with my 2020 Telluride. I went to the dealer this week. They stated that my radar may be bent from damage. I wasn't aware of any damage, but I suspect someone parallel parked and hit my bumper. The dealer wants $400 to remove the bumper and recalibrate. My friend has a garage. Can we remove the bumper and fix the issue without the dealer or must I get the radar recalibrated either way????

Mine was fixed . The radar unit was aiming too high. Had the issue from day one. They tried to blame me that I hit something. They told me replacing the unit would be $400 dollars. They finally figured it was aiming too high and it was adjusted . Never had a problem after that. It was still under warranty. But they always want to pas the blame. Not sure if the bumper needs to be removed for that. If you hit a parking space concrete stop or a snow bank up north it could bend the bracket. Mine was a problem from day one . They hit something or it just wasn’t adjusted properly at the factory. Try a different dealership and talk to the maintenance guy about the issue and procedures for an adjustment when you take it for an oil change. Good luck it took me a year of pestering them to finally get it done.

The dealership told me that they think my car was hit it and the radar needed to be adjusted and calibrated for $400. I wasn't convinced that it was caused by damage since the radar is several inches from the bumper and there is no apparent damage. I decided to just deal with it since it is very sporadic. If it was truly damaged, wouldn't i see the error message all the time? I drove cars for 45 years with no radar, and I will just disconnect it if the problem continues!

Since it not working properly and intermittently i would just adjust it down it down slightly . If you hit something it probably tilted up slightly. Try it see if it helps. Your mechanic friend could probably do it for you if you are not sure how to do it. Good luck.
