DIY Transfer case and Differential fluid service

Great write up. Question, the rear differential has a weird spec, GLSD1 All Temps, even AmSoil doesn’t have an equivalent. I do have the service page for the car but nothing like 75w-85 etc gear oil for an equivalent.

Thanks for posting the videos and the part numbers for the gaskets. The dealership parts dept told me there were no gaskets and I found out there were when I did the change!

I love to DIY much of my car maintenance and those videos were great. I already purchased a couple of the tools that he was using that I hadn't seen or used before. I loved the magnet tool the removes the oil plug without drenching my hands with hot oil.

One very important distinction that pro's know;
Remove the fill plugs FIRST. There have been times many a DiY will drain, then can't get the fill plug out for whatever reason. Whatcha gonna do, flip the car over to fill it?

MrMCar - question for you - I watched the WrenchingRyan video on an oil change for a Telluride and he adds BG MOA on every Telluride oil change. The manual recommends no additives and searching on Google, some people think BG MOA is snake oil, others say it makes a real difference. What is your opinion and recommendation? Do you use an additive when you do an oil change? I use Mobil One Advanced and the OEM Kia Filter and have never used an oil additive in any car.

TLDR: Do I use additives? Only in problem prone areas (chattering transfer case etc.) or when things are old and need a little help.

Longer Answer:
There's a great deal of mistrust when it comes to various oil additives for automobiles. With good reason, going back to the days of Andy Granitelli and STP. How do you think he funded his Indycar efforts? Egregious claims and promises abound. Over the long span of my hobby, which turned into my profession for 45+ years, I've tried most of the supplements (very apropos here) that can be had.

Most are just "Snake Oil", some work a little, some are great. Most of the additives I used were from Germany, most usually made by Liqui-Moly. The laws in Germany are very different than here in the U.S. Wild claims of being able to fix broken piston rings etc. will land folks in jail or heavily fined for claiming things that just aren't true. Unlike what's commonly available at your local Auto Zone.

Currently in my 24 Telly @ 23K miles, I use nothing. Just very proactive oil changes on the fives, and plan to service my transmission and differential oils at about 35K.

BG makes some very good products. Some of which I used regularly at my shop. All were for problem cars save one; The professional fuel system cleaner. Which requires the large pressurized apparatus to use it. This was done as a preventive measure against carbon at 30K intervals.

MOA is a good product however, I feel not usually needed before 100K and/or for poorly maintained cars. Ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Very true, stay on top of those oil changes and use the best oil you can afford, whilst meeting the spec.

LiquiMoly # 2030 Professional Fuel System Cleaner. Awesome add to gas cleaner. Twice yearly.
LiquiMoly Cerratec. I plan to start using perhaps at the 40K interval. Once a year.
Lubegard has awesome additives for transmissions and transfer cases. Many are problem solvers at the dealer level and Mfr. approved for chattering issues.

Something I that I think is a little under-handed; There was a time (despite my fondness for most of the line) when the Service manager, and the technicians got rewarded for every can of MoA sold. There was a little token at the bottom of every can. Every month when the rep came back to resupply the shop, each tech received a dollar for every token they turned in. One can do many oil changes in a month...
It won't hurt it, but do you need it? From the first oil change??

Thank you MrMCar! I'll hold off on the BG MOA until needed. I've been following your recommendation for LiquidMoly #2030 and using it every 5K in my Telluride and Lexus ES350 FSport. They are both running great. I'm still considering testing the BG MOA in the Lexus as it uses 0-20w synthetic oil and we have about 45K on it. That said, the Lexus has a great engine that is very problem free. I was also wondering if some dealerships are using the BG MOA on Tellurides to prevent the oil problems some have experienced on the higher mileage Tellurides.

You can use the L-M 2030 every oil change. Albeit, I think that's a bit much especially, if you're using Top Tier fuel?
I usually dose (miles driven per yr. dependent) into the tank twice a year.

Glad to see someone that gives a s#!t, most are looking for the CHEAPEST option.
