2020 Telluride AWD rear end jerking thumping and vibrating

Dealer just called. They ordered a transfer case, which won't arrive until September 18. Kia wants the defective case as they "are very interested in what went wrong."

I asked (for the third time) if they plan on checking the balance of the rear driveshaft. Manager said Techline wants them to install the new case then test drive it first. This makes little sense being there is Techline documentation re: rear driveshaft being out of balance on these vehicles.

I'm going down to the dealer this morning. I won't be Kia's test bed.

A comparable loaner and 1-2 months payment compensation would be warranted.

Ohio here... My Telluride has been at the shop for 12 days now. They did test the car without the rear drive shaft and vibration went away. Kia told them to get it balanced but no place in Cincinnati area is able to work on it. So Kia wants the shop to put my drive shaft in a Telluride that shows no problem and see if the problem follows the shaft. The service guys now seem to notice the vibration in just about all of the new Telluride AWDs! NEW - Kia also asked the shop to check the transfer case as in #Arch177's post. They found a similar problem and are sending someone to pick it up. I am forgetting what my Telluride looks like.

As for those thinking about Lemon Law, read your warranty and consumer info book. Also, each state has different conditions. Some say 3 tries and they do not need to be the same shop. If taken to the end result, you may choose a replacement that does not have the problem (and you all know how to quickly test for that) or in some cases may get a full refund. As for me, I am still hopeful that I can end up with a vehicle that runs smoothly on the highway. My service shop is working hard and Kia is now taking this seriously.

I called the salesman. He got the general manager on. Manager said he'd take a transfer case out of a Telluride that was just delivered. Said tech was test driving three LX's to make sure they are good.

I said I'd rather just have a new truck than one that's been pulled apart. He agreed to put me in a new Telluride.

I'm waiting to hear back from the GM. He's calling me once the test drives are complete.

Here's hoping!

And, yes, guys, I told the GM to make sure they get these trucks up to 65-75MPH. Lol.

Good for you sir! And good luck with the new one!

I'm not getting too excited until I hear they have a good one and then drive it myself!

Update: Two more AWD LX's at our dealer were no good. One, they drove and found it to be bad. We took one out they said they tested and thought OK. (This one had August 1, 2020 build date. Ours is 07/20).

Nope! Much worse than the one we purchased. Started around 65MPH. Got worse through and above 78MPH.

I could not drive through the issue as I could with the one we purchased.

Service manager said re: our truck, they took the rear driveshaft out. Vibration went away, but there was a noise from the transfer case. Fluid check showed metal in it.

It's possible driving 800+ miles with the vibration damaged the transfer case, but who knows?

So, they have a second dealership with three more LXs. They are going to test them tomorrow.

If they don't find us a working Telluride, the dealer will undo the sale and refund us our money.

What a pain!

We are having the exact same issue with the Palisade. It has been so incredibly frustrating. We want a new vehicle or our money back.

They are bringing one from their other dealership. Supposedly had it up to 90mph and no issues.

They are calling me when it arrives. We'll see... I have a feeling we'll be cancelling the sale and looking for another vehicle entirely.

So, after waiting all day, the "vetted" Telluride had arrived and was awaiting me to test drive. I was assured by the manager and sales guy it was thoroughly shaken down and "good to go." They reportedly had it up to 90MPH with no issues.

This truck had 80 miles on it when I got in it.

I got on the parkway and at first, no vibration at the magical numbers, BUT there was a faint hum. This hum was present on two entirely different roadways and faded (initially) at speeds below 50MPH.

I drove the truck about 30 miles. During this drive, the dreaded vibration started up and then got much worse the more I drove.

This vibration was most noticeable 67-73MPH and present above 80MPH. It then was becoming noticable from 55MPH on up.

I drove back to the dealer. I explained to both my sales guy and the owner what occurred.

The sales guy then drove it with me in the passenger seat. He noticed it and said, "I would never buy this, let alone sell one with this problem!"

There is truly a major defect with the AWD version, regardless of trim level (or if it's a Pallisade). I think other folks who own these and not had the problem either have not driven at interstate speeds yet or just think the noise and vibration is normal for the vehicle.

I left the dealer tonight with the loaner Sorrento (barf). The owner said he will call his Kia corporate rep Monday, advise him they now have AT LEAST four bad Tellurides sitting, unsellable (they have several others they need to check out. Maybe I should do it for them!), in their lot. He assured me he'll make things right for my wife and for our troubles. That's if Kia comes up with a fix NOW, he puts us in another vehicle entirely (he has a mint 2018 Expedition on the lot) or just cancels the sale and refunds us our money.

The owner and service manager are following this thread now.

Monday is do or die for the Telluride for us. We've been more than patient. So much stress and inconvenience (ruined my vacation dealing with this). Even if they fix it, this truck won't inspire confidence in its reliability.

I'll be sure to contact Kia customer service, the better business bureau (re: Kia, not the dealer, as they are stuck in the middle of this and trying to get a solution) and, Consumer Reports NHTSA...

Until Monday...

Man... glad I got a FWD

I understand your frustration and the temptation to make assumptions. Yet, I guarantee you not all AWDs have the vibration issue. Ours has no noise and no vibration at any speed. We have over 5,000 miles on ours driven primarily at speeds between 65 and 80 mph.

Mr. Mac, my friend, apparently found a unicorn! Lol. I wish you many happy miles.

For one dealer (mine) to have at least four known bad trucks is not a fluke. CincyTech's dealer has the same. If you've been following this thread, it is clear this truck has been born under a bad sign.

I have to second @mrmac. I, too, have an AWD now with over 5,000 miles and no hint of any noise or vibration at any speed. That does not in any way negate the problem @Arch177 and several others are experiencing as these are real and serious problems. I just hope the Techline engineers can get this one figured out quickly!

I agree there may be many more out there that people just assume this is a normal condition.

I highly doubt the dealer is going to tell a potential customer there may be a problem with a brand new car in their lot.

Better Business Bureau?

I've not missed a post in this thread. There is a clear problem with the drive shaft manufacturers quality control.

That being said, I'm intimately involved with the auto industry as one the biggest lenders, and have a close relationship with my Kia store management. There has not been even one AWD with a vibration issue here. A couple seat issues, but not the issue you and a select few have.

Nearly 40,000 of these and fifty percent AWD. This is a small issue on a small sample of vehicles. A big issue to you, but small overall.
