Dealer Markup

I have been looking for several months and everyone has been marking the price up between $3000 and $5000 for a S model. I actually had a dealership try to sell me the spare tire, window tint and other standard items for an additional $3,000. Someone who doesn't know would have paid extra for those things. I was able to find a dealership in Tulsa OK who sold me mine for $1250 below MSRP. I jumped on it as soon as I could.

Today I found a Metro Atlanta (GA) dealer selling USED SX White/Butterscotch (with 9,000 miles on it) for $44,900. Which is 2K+ over MSRP for the same as new. As far as I have been told it does not have any other equipment or options on it. INSANE! Dealers will who were a nightmare to deal with, under normal circumstances, with fall deeper into the "BAD REPUTATION" name-tag and it's their own making. KIA should have something to say about these dealers marking up Tellurides by 3K, 4K, 5K and 10K. INSANE! This will scar the reputation of dealers and KIA. This is nonsense over a vehicle!

Yep, preaching to the choir my friend. :) Let's hope the inventory situation can normalize by next year. On the other hand, at least Kia finally has a hit and dealers can make some cash - maybe they can upgrade the dealerships a little... LOL. There is some behavioral economics at work here... because if Kia had set the MSRP $2-6 k higher depending on trim giving dealers more wiggle room to offer discounts (similar to other car dealerships like Acura, or luxury dealerships with large margins on some trims/vehicles) - then maybe we wouldn't see these markups and we'd feel like we got a "deal" when we got a 'discount' from the dealer.

i.e. take SX-P - $48,000 sticker with $1000 finance discount = $47,000.
- $54,000 sticker (theoretical higher MSRP) with $1000 finance discount and $4500 discount to price from dealer = $48,500

I'm worse off in the second case - I paid more for the same vehicle - but do I feel like I got a deal?

Some mass market manufacturers like Kia and Mazda tend to have a smaller margin between invoice and MSRP - which means that dealerships really don't make all that much on the sale of the car - only through dealer add-ons, markups and the finance department. All those tactics were invented long ago, and frustrate consumers - so I think Kia really needs to rethink the model. I couldn't believe it when I walked into an Acura dealership and they're willing to give $8k off sticker for some models - which would bring price down close to SX-P in some cases. Good luck doing that at a Kia dealership... even with the Sorento many dealers are trying to stick with the factory incentives first (which are large) before offering dealership discounts. Same with Mazda.

BMW and Audi, however, tend to have smaller margins on their gateway vehicles (3-series, X1, Q5) and then much larger margins on higher trims/more expensive vehicles. Then they have massive costs for "option" packages... which have their own margins built in!

One day, hopefully, we'll be able to order with full transparency... like Tesla - but then individual consumers who show up at the dealership at 7:00 p.m. the Saturday before quarter end to haggle may not get as good of a deal as they do now! :)

When I was at Kia HQ for a focus group several months back, I complained about some of the egregious behavior by some of the Kia dealers (Kia of Irvine was down right slimy and scammy!!). They were visibly disappointed and stated that they don't have direct dealer control (unlike Tesla). I would assume that there is SOME sort of incentive model to reward positive customer experience at dealerships, but seems like Kia doesn't have a way of punishing bad behavior. I agree that bad dealers will have Karma to address these, but ultimately, I don't see the needle moving unless Kia corporate does something drastic. For now, all customer can do is reward good dealers with repeat business and referals.

Typically after a purchase KIA corporate sends out a report card based on overall experience. We take these very seriously. As far as a bad experience prior to a sale... Not much you can do. I'm sorry for the experience you had. Not all of us are like this. We strive everyday to deliver an exceptional customer experience.

Yes, I appreciate that there are a few dealers out there that value customers and are looking to build a long-lasting relationship. Many people tend to stick with a brand when they have a positive experience. In the end, I found a dealer (AllStar Kia in San Bernardino) that was reasonable (and even came down $1000 off MSRP before incentives). And when my survey arrived, I gave them a positive review. I wish there was a way to provide constructive feedback to Kia for all of the other dealers I had to deal with (I actually escalated Kia of Irvine to Costco Auto Buying program, but I don't think that anything even happened!). My only recourse was to refer people to AllStar and ward off anyone I knew/or asked from Kia of Irvine. Product-wise, Kia is hitting it out of the park, but the customer buying process is decades behind. Keep up the good work!

Tim where about are you in Ca? I'm in Rancho Cucamonga and I ordered my SXP Telluride from Jesse from AllStar Kia in San Bernardino and expected delivery date is the 27th of this month. Sold it to me for MSRP. I have much Respect for AllStar Kia in SanBernardino.

I'm in Corona area, and yes, Jesse is the man! I think I was at a golden moment where they didn't quite understand the demand and I managed to get an SX-P in Moss Green off the lot for $1K under plus incentives back in March. I think that they are being fair and not slapping on lots of extras to jack up the price. They were a drive even for me, but I do recommend AllStar. Good luck with your ride!

I ordered my SX non-prestige in MA and got it for MSRP. Everything else about the dealer experience was awful. Awful. Wicked awful.

This is America, and you are allowed to charge whatever the market will bear...there is nothing wrong about it. The only one to blame is KIA for not making enough Tellurides. But a shortage of vehicles because of high demand is not “Insane”.
The penalty for charging too much is losing business to another dealer...as it should be.

Why don’t you just call dealers in Alabama. The one in Auburn sells them at MSRP, I ordered mine Aug 8 and got it Sept 13th. White SX.

Well you have to give us more than that!
I've purchased several other brands of vehicles from several different dealers in the past. By far, this was the worse experience. Ordering it was easy. Communication about the order while waiting was awful, went to pick up vehicle, but had to wait several hours because it wasn't ready. Vehicle had a scuff on the front fender that didn't buff out, got the run around, ultimately decided to live with it because didn't want that dealer to touch it. Finance guy was a complete dink. He got upset when I questioned a $3800 extended warranty that he offered. they he "remembered" they had one for $1600. I'm not even one to complain, but could go on and on. The wife even said to me " What is up with this place?" Overall, everyone there was somewhat rude and dishonest. Have had way better experiences with Honda, Toyota, and VW (GTI) dealers in the past. Oh wait, don't even get me started on the service department..

If you want a good deal consider the LX model or S and EX, the SXP seems to be the 1 that is most in demand. The S model is well equipped. Right now I have 1 LX and 1 EX both are black and i'm not asking over MSRP. Actually i'm willing to take a little off the top.f
Are you selling the SX at msrp?
