If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... If you live in a "snow, ice climate" turn your "auto wipers" to "off" and turn the "welcome program" to off ....that's the one that auto folds and opens the mirrors......frozen snow/ice can cause serious problems!!!

Now that frigid weather is here for some of us, that’s great advise! I didn’t really think of this. Thx....

Is this based from experience? I've never had a car that had power folding mirrors, but have friends that do...and they don't seem to change anything (including auto wipers) during the winter.

Of course, we probably don't have the same winter conditions up there in PA, but we so have our share of harsh ones.

I live in Pa and also have property in Vermont.....have had other vehicles with the folding mirrors and auto wipers and I learned the lesson the hard way.....in attempting to complete the "auto unfold" with a heavy ice coating, a plastic gear part of one of my mirrors was broken....it all happened so fast , I could not stop it. SO.....now I kill the "auto" mirrors and wipers in the winter

It is an expensive repair also. An EZ-Pass toll gate did not rise as I entered the booth. I tapped it hard enough to snap it off but not
hard enouch to cause any front end damage at all. But the gate came down on the drivers mirror snapping that off.

Turns out you can't just replace the mirror housing and/or mounting. The entire mirror, electronics and all had to be replaced.
About $650 list for parts alone.

I’ve never had an issue with my auto mirrors or auto wipers in Minnesota. Owned my current car for 8 years at this point, so I’m skeptical on the claim this needs to be done.
Kia may not have the same “protection features” of my Volvo (car knows when window fully blocked with snow/ice and will not activate wipers and clutch mechanism on the mirror protects in case of ‘high forces’). I won’t know for sure until I actually get my Telluride.

It would be nice IF the system detected blockage and stopped.....I have double checked the manual and there is no reference to any protection system system like that that is on your Volvo.....I did not have any such protection on a Mercedes GL and that's where my damage occurred ......of course warranty did NOT cover because it "was driver error in not deactivating the option in a winter environment" . Anyway.....I am now cautious!

Owner's Manual...

Alludes to a potential problem if the mirrors are stuck and moved by force. If broken, it will not be covered by warranty.

If you don't have one, then you ca always find it on-line. https://www.mikemurphykia.com/static/dealer-16619/pdf/2020-kia-telluride-manual.pdf

Im surprised that MB had those specific verbiage that power folding mirrors have to be deactivated in a winter environment. Was that on their manual?

I don’t think I’ve read that anywhere in the KT manual.

Actually....It was NOT in their manual that you should deactivate in winter.....but they indicated that their responsibility was not to "warn me of every possibility" .....long story , but in the end I understood.

In my opinion, if a feature can only be used half of the time, it is not a feature, it is a liability and I wish I didn’t have it all. Might be deactivong these mirrors permanently and only manually activating in time of need (possibly parallel parking) might not even need to do that with the 360 camera.

You are correct!!

Every Audi I've owned had power folding mirrors. Never had a problem with any of them during winters here in New England. Nada, zip, zilch.

I don't expect a problem with this vehicle. Enjoy the ride!

Great!! The only issue that I THINK everyone should be aware of IS.....if you do not have a garage and you keep your car out in the open and you approach ( auto system ) and the mirrors try to unfold AND they are are blocked by snow, ice, etc.......you WILL be responsible for whatever damage occurs!!
Just sayin.....

Has your service manager told you this information? Or, is there some sort of TSB stating owners in colder climates should deactivate the function? Never had an issue. I don't expect one. I've had cars buried in ice and snow for days in airport lots with no issues. Can you justify your "you WILL be responsible for whatever damage occurs!!" comment with an official Kia Motors America document? The owners manual does not state I'll be responsible for folding mirror damage. The owners manual alludes to ice / snow trapped in the housing of the mirror glass. It does not specifically call out the power folding mechanism. If that was the case, the manual would absolutely call out deactivating this feature in cold environments.

Ok....it's a "bit of this and a bit of that".....I can only state what happened to me one very icy morning when I pressed my remote unlock on my Mercedes GL and the mirrors attempted to unfold. One did and one did not because of heavy ice......after cleaning off the car, the stuck mirror still would not function.....took it in and they said a plastic gear part of the folding mechanism had broken when it attempted to push the mirror open. It was not covered by warranty. They also said it would be wise to turn "auto wipers" off in the winter as the blades are not covered should they be torn by ice. On the other hand, have found that some cars apparently have mirrors with a sensor and will automatically stop the unfold process is resistance is sensed . ( Mazda CX5) . But I have also read that BMW ships its vehicles with the auto fold function disabled "so as to prevent damage in colder climates" ( from an article in the BMW forum )....apparently no sensor there. So.....everyone do what you feel is best: ask your dealer if damage would be covered.....maybe the Telluride has a "pressure sensor" to protect the mechanism.....I do not know. My assumption is that I would be responsible to pay the the bill. I disable mine in the winter.

Holy Mackerel!
If any parts on your car that move as part of their operation are frozen solid, it may be best not to move them until they defrost...unless you don’t mind shelling out $650 or so for a mirror repair—for example. This is what “Just Sayin’” is sayin’! You don’t need a service manager or TSB to tell you that.

And when are they going to defrost when you live in the cold north? It’s not like we go above freezing very often between December and February 😆😆😆.

In fact, going above freezing makes things worse. Snow or ice turns to water, which goes where you can’t see it (inside cracks/gaps), which then freezes and breaks stuff more than the superficial ice/snow you could see.

Does the owners manual speak about taking precautions depending on climate and conditions. I've had other vehicles and presently have a 2015 BMW 550i xDrive used primarily in Chicago without issue. These are mature features.

You missed what I was sayin. I did not state in my posts that I have, or would unwittingly apply brute force to frozen car parts in the dead of Winter. My point was that Kia Motors has not communicated to cold climate owners to disable this feature or that owners are 100% responsible for costs related to failures of the feature.
