Anyone buy an extended warranty on the Telluride?

I hate to burst everyone's bubble regarding the electronics warranty but typically with electronics, if something is going to fail, it will fail within the first 30 days or so of life. Extended warranties on things such as the stereo, speakers and even navigation are a complete waste of money. You are buying a Kia Telluride because of the quality. Why then would you turn around and spend an extra $1,200 to extend the warranty on the electronics?

This is simply the warranty companies preying on your fear that something will go wrong with your shiny new car. It is like the salesman who tells you to buy a Sony TV due to their high quality (which is true by the way) and then in the next sentence trying to convince you to spend $500 - 600 on an extended warranty.
Sure, that's a fair opinion. But, for those that do want an extended warranty, Kia of Muncie has provided a fair priced plan for forum members - well below the price of many other dealerships. It's also comprehensive. I know you won't be buying it, but some people want them.

I’ll add that I just had 3 electronics failures at $1400/ea on my 5yr old Lexus all covered under the CPO warranty. If you’re just keeping your Telluride for 3-5 years, first 30 days is probably accurate. But I tend to keep my cars for 6-10 years and have often had electronics failures in those later years. FWIW, I almost never buy extended warranties but on occasion, they make sense to me.

My ‘dealer’ refused to go below $3000. Muncie was fair on their price at less than half. We’ll easily drive this truck through 100k. Made sense to me.

I too would like 10/125 coverage... Fidelity does not offer this (confirmed with my delivering dealer and Craig@Muncie)

It's a different company that my delivering dealer also sells - The Warranty Group - contract is called 'The Mechanic® Vehicle Service Contract'.

Don't know if this is exactly what rnzhales got... but I'd certainly be interested in 10/125 coverage for 1K... even a bit more...
Did you ever figure out where to get this warranty from?

I have purchased 30 brand new cars in 52 years.....only ever bought extended warranty on 3. Those 3 (including the Telluride ) were all "1st year models" with "advanced tech" or complicated suspension systems. Don't have enough history on the Telly yet, but on the other two I only used the extended war. once and it DID save me over $1k in repair......so I "won" that one. It's a dice roll......but if it makes you/me comfortable with a 1styr AND you are going to keep it for the long run, it is "dice roll" that I think is worth it.

Got it thru my purchasing dealer - after negotiation, it was the same price as the 8/120 offered here; but when driving 15000/year - this gives me a little over 8 years coverage on the whole vehicle. Should annual mileage go down, then there will be up to 10 years of coverage. It's called 'ServiceGuard' from Automotive Warranty Services, Inc. out of Chicago.

@Engs - you're absolutely right - it's a crap shoot. So is collision insurance, I've driven for 40 years without an accident, but I still cover my vehicles with collision insurance. An extended warranty is effectively 'breakdown insurance'. I've also gotten value out of several extended warranties over the years - "Click Here" to take a look at my previous post in this thread.

The dealer does have a huge mark up - that's why Muncie can offer such a good price - they are banking on smaller profit per policy on a larger number of policies they otherwise would not have sold - also why at my dealer, the initial price of the warranty was 2-1/2 times what they ended up selling it to me for. The dealer really doesn't care if the extended warranty is used or not - they are not the ones backing the warranty - it's the warranty (effectively, insurance) company [other than the dealer hoping you'll come back to them to have the covered service done so they can collect from the warranty company].

As far as "the small print somewhere that somehow excludes your issue from the policy" - make sure the warranty is an 'exclusionary' contract - which means the only stuff excluded is what's in the small print - if the repair is not listed as excluded - the repair is covered; so you know before you buy what's not covered.

JMHO - FWIW

THIS!

A lot of companies out there that hide their details on the fine print.

Just like additional insurance (short term disability, etc.), what you're essentially buying is peace of mind.

Great thanks for the info. I drive about 15k/yr currently so I’ll look into this more.

Great thread.

Just ordered my Telluride and will see what my dealer offers before contacting Craig. Based off of what I had to negotiate at my dealer, they won't beat his price. Will know soon enough.

Just joined and am very impressed with this forum.

I’m trying to decide what to do. I drive about 15k/yr. Fidelity has the 10/100 and 8/125, and The Mechanic Warranty has 10/125 (which would be ideal), but I’m sure for not as good a price as Muncie or where to even purchase it from.

I decided to purchase the extended warranty to make it bumper to bumper for 10yr/100,000. It was $1,450 to bump up the interior coverage from 5yr/60,000 and the electronics from 3yr/36,000. Worth it to me for peace of mind for a full 10 years/100K. There is a $100 deductible with my plan after the KIA warranty expires. It is through a third party recognized by any KIA dealer.

Updated Platinum Warranty. Only thing that changes is if you want the 0% financing it now has a $200 Fee associated with it. Fixed cost to us, not much we can do about it. Still $1478 if you pay for it upfront. PDF is attached.

That is the plan. Reading some of the above should have never happened to you guys. I'm hopeful to have something in place after the holiday.
Jason - anything happening yet? We have a 2020 Telluride w/271 miles, looking for extended warranty

Got an initial quote from the dealer I am purchasing from for 10yr/150k miles for $1925. Zero deductible if taken to my dealership. I have NOT seen the paperwork yet. Just know it takes everything to the 10yr/150k mark. I do not know if this similar to what Jason has. I will find out more in the coming days as my vehicle is scheduled for delivery on 1/29. I appreciate all of the info here. My Dealer also offered a Oil change, tire rotation and cabin filter changes for 84 months (not mileage dependent). Based on oil change every 7500 miles. Cost about $1100. Anyone else prepay service like this?

Wow that warranty sounds great. I’d be interested in knowing if they would sell that warranty to someone that didn’t buy the car from them.
