However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hi all,

I am going to be in the market for a new vehicle in a couple of months and Telluride is at the top of my list (second choice is Volkswagen Atlas). I am in the Northern IL area (Lake County) so I'll be browsing the forums in the interim. Any dealer recommendations for a dealer in Northern IL? Most likely going to have to order due to lack of inventory, how does the process work if you have a trade in? (I've never ordered a car before). Do you continue to drive the trade in vehicle after you have ordered your Telly? Does the trade in value change if the build takes 5-6 months?

Thanks everyone,

Alex

Hi Alex! Welcome aboard! And thank you for signing up. I'm highly confident you're going to end up with a Telluride over the Atlas. Please keep us posted on your decision... :) I'm glad you found us!

From what I understand, dealerships would honour the trade in value they offer given there are no materials changes like huge spike in miles or some type of damage. I'd get it in writing or some type of committment but I have seen a friend's trade in being honoured after 5 month of waiting for her Volvo to arrive. They discussed the wait time before and agreed that dealership would give her the value they agreed upon.

Thank you! I'm very confident that the Telly will be the one (let's just say I didn't join an Atlas forum lol). If I can make it work, a white SX is the dream

And Konstantin, thank you! That's good info. My trade (14 Explorer with 62k miles) is my main source of down payment. It's paid off so I want to make sure I'm getting top dollar for it

You are not getting top dollar for it if you are trading it in. If your finances allow for it, I'd try to sell it privately and then use cash for downpayment on Telluride. You can always get more when selling directly compared to what dealers give you. The only issue if timing of when your vehicle is sold as you need something to drive and not sure when exactly it's going to sell so might need to access some other savings for downpayment while your Ford is being sold.

Well yeah, I meant top dollar trade in value. Unfortunately I can't be without a vehicle for very long and from what I see it's going to be a bit of a process to get into a Telluride lol. So private sale would be very difficult for me pull off.

I guess I could daily drive my 500 hp foxbody Mustang but the gasoline bill would put me in the poor house 🤣

Welcome...

More than likely they won't value your trade now. It'll fluctuate in that 5-6 month window or whatever it is going to be. Before you go to take delivery of your car whether you ordered or buy off the lot, hit up Carmax and get an offer (it'll be good for 7 days). Factor in the tax benefit as well on the trade (which IL has no limited to $10k as of 1/1/20) and determine which is better. It would be ideal to sell privately, but that isn't the easiest given your situation. You can screw around with some of the other places that will buy your car (autotrader, etc.) as well.

In terms of dealers, stay away from McGrath (some are advertising over $10k over MSRP). Gary Lang expect to pay a $2k premium over MSRP which isn't horrible but more than I wanted to pay. Most of them will charge over MSRP. Elgin accepts Costco pricing on orders (sounds like it's now a $500 discount under MSRP per a post yesterday).

There is a spreadsheet on here that shows all the vehicles and what was shipped to a dealer, you can filter it. Find dealers near you with the highest #s of vehicles and start there. It'll make for hopefully a shorter wait from order date. Some of them might try to gouge you (see some of the other threads out there), but you might find a good one. Worst case, there are a few dealers on here that will be more than happy to help you out and offer MSRP on vehicles coming in that aren't spoken for yet or Muncie that offers Costco pricing on orders as well. They all seem like good guys out to sell cars and be fair vs. play games.

Might be worth a call or drive down to Kia of Muncie. They are doing Costco pricing and have been getting rave reviews on the FB pages. Jason Fox is the contact.

Hi Raydog and critrider,

Thank you! What would be nice is to luck into an SX on a lot - that would save me all the hassle with trading in. I have seen a couple selling at MSRP, and I dont' necessarily need the Prestige package. I would be happy with Everlasting Silver or white.

I have seen McGrath mentioned here as not the greatest and I had a buddy go to Gary Lang to check in on a Telluride for himself and he said he walked out about 5 mins later because they were awful. Kia Napleton (Elgin) and Classic in Waukegan look pretty decent, and definitely Jason at Muncie is on my radar. It's about 4.5 hour drive for me to Muncie but it's worth it for a good experience and a fair deal. I will be putting the wheels in motion in a couple months while I pocket some extra downpayment coin so for now I'll be browsin'.

If you're in IL you're so close to IN you can't not go see @Jason Fox and Lucas at Kia of Muncie.

All things considered and dollar for dollar, I think the Telluride is impossible to beat especially if you are looking at an SX trim.

Hi Wee,

Yeah Muncie is really impressing me, I've been browsing and see lots of activity and positive reviews from Jason and Lucas that I will absolutely be hitting them up. I might go to Gary Lang and get a test drive and then go with Muncie for the purchase. I've been doing SO much homework and have crossed basically everything off the list - Ford Explorer (and I'm a lifelong Ford guy), Traverse (meh), Subaru Ascent (CVT trans - barf), etc. The Telluride is just the total package. I saw an SX on the road and almost broke my neck looking at it lol. The Atlas R Line is a close second and you can get an SEL R-Line for big discounts off the price. Telly is still first choice!

This may not be the case anymore.... I had a VW GTI for many years from 2009-2015, it was an awesome car and VW engineers excellent vehicles - as do most German automakers. However the repair costs were stupid expensive, and there were many minor fixes and repairs I could not do myself because you needed a special tool(s) to complete to job and I wasn't going to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on tools just so I could perform things like an oil change.

Maybe you don't like doing your own minor repairs and general maintenance, that's personal preference. However this was a big factor in selecting a larger vehicle for myself and my wife that we would keep for many years and many miles. I didn't want to get stuck not being able to do some general things or forced to spend $80-100 for a full synthetic oil change when I can do it at home for $35. For this reason I will not buy another VW unless for some reason I don't want to turn a wrench on my own car.

Yeah, i know VW's quality isn't exactly what it once was, that's why if I was going to go VW, I would get a '19 for that 6 yr/72k mile warranty bumper to bumper. The Atlas is a really sharp ride, (no Telly though)

From a fellow Mustanger, I can also recommend Kia of Muncie. I'm from Ohio and made the treck over to buy from them. Best purchasing experience I've ever had. I love the foxes, but the wife doesn't, so we ended up with an S197 droptop. I got pics of her in the media section.

Awesome! I'll check them out. Always loved stangs - Dad (in law) has a 69 and wife had a 13 up until she needed AWD. The S197 is a beautiful thing, I'm sure it's a joy.

Here's my 91 Lx

very nice..my Dad had an 84 GT used to get to drive from time to time..that car hooked me on the Mustang, became an instant fan. My friends mom had a Camaro and it didn't do much for me..Kia's and Mustangs are all I'll buy now.. Have the Stinger GT2 for my daily (need the AWD)..the Stang is our weekend fun car.

If I didn't have the twins I'd be in a Stinger no questions asked lol. What a beautiful car

I feel ya... my kid days are done..we do have the Telluride for when we take the grandkids out....up to 4 of them right now.

You might want to go down to Gerald Kia Naperville. They did a build order for us early Jan. Cool thing is they have a real test track. Can try the skid pad, hill up and down. Off road on big river rocks. Simulate going over rail road tracks and more. Be prepared for the mandatory dealer prep package pitch and negotiate it.

I'd stay away from Gerald Kia. They advertise on their website that they have several Tellurides in stock, but when you show up they say "we had a busy weekend" and none are to be found. BUT, they are happy to order you one. When you go to place an order for one, they say they'll sell at MSRP without any markups, but then they force you to buy the mandatory $1984 paint protection package. I said I wouldn't want that crap if they paid me. I walked away and ordered from a local dealer without any markup.
