• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... When should I take my new 2020 Telluride in for its first oil change and service?

Oil change can be every 3750 miles or 6 months. Service is every 7500 miles or year.

@SVoigt you are correct, it does say to change oil at 3750 for severe conditions. Their description of severe conditions sounds very similar regular to New England rush hour traffic though.

Per the dealers in the area, Central Illinois is in “severe” conditions as well. Not sure where one lives that isn’t....

If you ask a dealer, severe is everywhere (more service revenue!) but most reputable publications say it really only applies to less than 5% of drivers - those driving mostly on gravel roads, frequent sub-zero temps, daily mountain grades, etc. Most schedules also recommend annual oil changes regardless of mileage which picks up the frequent short trip crowd who have trouble getting the oil hot enough to evaporate fuel and moisture.

All that being said, there is nothing wrong with changing oil more often, other than cost. Whatever let’s you sleep at night....

Our dealer service advisor says normal service.

My service advisor stated we were normal driving conditions and didn't need to do changes until 7500 miles. My first one will probably be in the 1000 mile range. Old habit of letting the engine get rid of any contaminants with the first oil change.

For both of our Tellurides, we do every 5000 miles. Dealer recommended this and I find that acceptable. Dealer charges around $70 for oil/filter change and tire rotation.

Given the relatively short oil change intervals, I assume Tellurides come standard with conventional motor oil? If so, can anyone think of any reason not to change to synthetic oil, with its' longer life, at their first oil change? It's better environmentally as there's less waste and certainly much more convenient

Know one knows what the factory fill is, but presumably it is conventional and the OCI in the OM is based on using the spec’ed oil which can be conventional, synthetic, or a blend. Typically you can extend intervals when you sub synthetic for conventional, but Kia still requires 7.5k intervals to keep your warranty in effect, so using synthetic doesn’t really reduce costs or environmental impacts unless you were planning on going shorter with conventional.

Keep in mind that the term “synthetic oil” is a marketing term and there are no hard/fast rules about what it really means. If/when I get a Telluride, I’ll probably use a name brand synthetic (e.g., Mobil 1) but I will do so to reduce engine wear and provide headroom for challenging conditions (e.g. towing), not to extend OCIs.
