In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Sorry if this has been asked but I need a specific answer.

I have never purchase a new car or out of state. My initial price sheet breakdown from the dealership I'm working with includes taxes and registration fees in which I assumed from my state. But when I spoke to a different associate this weekend, I was told that once the vehicle has been delivered out here, I would still pay my local sales tax and must do the registration and possibly have it inspected to make sure it's within regulations.

What would be the usual process on buying a car out of state? Are all the things I mentioned could be done by the dealership as if I'm buying locally or I gotta do the leg work? Just don't want the extra hassle and headache.

Thanks in advance!

I have purchased multiple cars out of state here in Nebraska. The out of state dealers have always offered to put their state taxes and registration in the loan at their state tax rate. I always decline because Nebraska has a high tax rate and I don't to deal with the amount being short at the DMV or hear them tell me I shouldn't have paid it. So, my loan is always for only the prices of the car. No taxes, no registration. When I go the DMV I have to pay them local sales tax, and registration before they will hand my plates across the counter. At least that's how it works here in Nebraska. Consult you local DMV to make sure you don't get screwed.

Thank you so much for the clear explanation! Here I am thinking I'm being smart and not giving in to my local stealerships by buying out of state. But it goes to show I have not done my homework fully yet! Such a pain to deal with all these hoops! Takes away all the fun and excitement! I'm always afraid now that I'm gonna get burn and be stuck with a mistake I made because of simply lack of information.

At our dealership when you pay cash you can pay taxes and fees at your state DMV. Price of car + $20 transit tax + our doc fee ($100) But if you finance then you have to include taxes and fees for your state not local state tax. Hope that helps

So if the rep included my tax and registration in the price sheet drawn up, does that mean they'll take care of that on their end? I'm financing everything and having it delivered out here in Cali from Arizona.

I'm awaiting til tomorrow for the response from the original rep I am working with and this info just came to me this weekend and I would like to sort it out before I finalize things with them.

I thought once delivered, I will just simply accept it, wait for my plates and be done with it. I'm so lost on this

I forgot to add that most states that share a border will have to collect sales tax no matter what. I Would double check with the dealer about the sales tax.
