• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... After searching high and low for something to fill the space between our second row captains chairs, I decided to tackle making something myself. Sharing for fun.

I wanted the captains chairs when we ordered our Telluride. We love to road trip with our dog and her preferred spot is laying between our teens in the second row. I figured we could shove some pillows in there but ultimately I wanted something that looked more intentional. With some help from my woodworker dad, we made a plywood riser and I padded, covered and finished it with marine vinyl. It should be heavy enough to stay in place but for good measure we added two tabs to the back to keep it from sliding forward.

What other solutions has anyone seen to fill the gap?

We took our new dog for a short trip yesterday and put the back seats down, bur she preferred sitting in the captain chair. My wife and I talked about maybe putting a large pillow in the car but this looks better. I'll have to show this to my son and see if maybe he can measure the seats and make something like this. Thanks for posting!

It looks great, but why didn't you just get the second row bench seat instead?

We wanted the SX trim where bench seat isn’t available. Plus we only need the filler when our pup is with us.

I tackled this gap by purchasing a foam mattress pad from target for 15 bucks. Bought the one for a full size bed and rolled it up. Since I have a dog proof seat cover it covers it and the captains chairs nicely. Now the dog can stretch out in the second row.

I like it!

You should create an Etsy account and build/sell that for others! Would you be willing to build and sell one to me? This was something that ALMOST kept me from purchasing. Searching everywhere for a solution and this is exactly what I'm looking for, but haven't found anything that I can buy...

How about one with storage included?

How about one with storage included?
Storage would be GREAT too, that way it fits in as an insert similar to the front row. But just that sleek soft leather insert would be perfect for the dogs, and not have to remove it when the dogs aren't in the car. I have black leather interior so would fit right in. But if if could have storage, man oh man, I would be willing to pay a pretty penny for that! Others on Amazon are so rough and blah looking, and "standard" not necessarily for Telluride. I like the way @kapl1mac included the slip protection legs too.

@Sparkle Girl 47 while not as pretty/fancy, I did find this one on Amazon MSR-IMPORTS-Dog-Seat-Extender. One of the reviewers said she used it to fill the gap between the captain seats, and it has storage included, and as a plus it's collapsible so when you have passengers can just remove it. I just purchased so will give an update once it arrives.

Would still prefer what @kapl1mac built since it can stay in place when passengers are in the car and much nice looking, but closest I could find was this one on Amazon Enchanted-Home-Pet-Orthopedic-Backseat but after reading the reviews it didn't seem sturdy/reliable and the outer coating got some faulty reviews as well. If the one I ordered does fit, I may post a request on Etsy for someone to custom build to spec with the storage option and matching leather exterior to fit in with the car, since I plan to have a hammock dog seat cover anyways when my pups are in the car.

Hi there, apologies for my delay! I've been away from the forum for a few weeks. I wish I could offer to build one for you, I don't have the means currently. I built the one I have while visiting my parents as my dad has a full woodshop at his disposal. It's not a complicated build however, anyone handy near you could probably execute. I love the storage idea. If you end up commissioning something please share photos. I would love to see how yours turns out.

@kapl1mac are you able to share the specs and materials/process used? I may be able to convince my Dad to take up a new project, but he lives 400 miles away so would need to give him exact details. Anything helps :-)

Sure. I don’t have the measurements anymore but since you own the vehicle you can probably fetch those yourself. The build process was really simple. It’s a simple plywood box stapled together. It does mimic the footprint of the gap between the seats meaning it’s tapered. Slightly more narrow at the back as well as taller at the front. When I measured I subtracted a couple inches from the overall desired height because I knew I was adding foam.
We then added a simple straight piece of wood to the back to act as the “tabs” that rest behind the captains chairs. This keeps it from sliding forward. Although after living with it I’m fairly sure it would take a pretty hard braking stop for it to move. It’s sheer weight from the wood and friction from the fabrics hold it in place pretty well.
Then I purchased a piece of 2” foam and some batting from my local Joann to cover the top for cushioning. This part was just extra. I honestly think a few layers of batting only would do the trick, depends on how much cushion you want under your pup.
The marine vinyl was sourced on Etsy for a good price. I treated this part of the project like an upholstery project and ended it up adding a seam at each corner with my sewing machine for a clean look but if you wanted to skip that step you could probably just fold extra material in as you attach the vinyl.
It’s all held together with staples at the bottom. Just pulled taught and secured. I did glue a piece of felt on the bottom to cover the staples. After 6 months mine has help up excellent and I wouldn’t change anything about how we built it. I really hope this is helpful!E186A624-8BA4-4EDA-A854-A4ED4FE9FD2F.webp

Thank you so much for the details! This helps tremendously :)

Our dog wasn't happy with our new Telluride - he was just a little too big to get comfortable on the captain's chairs, and didn't feel stable enough when he was sitting upright on the seat. He always looked uncomfortable and nervous. I found a solution that he loves - it's actually an inflatable foot stool that can be inflated just enough to fit between the captain's chairs and high enough to comfortably bridge the gap between the two seats. It doesn't look great (especially with the doggie seat cover) but it's very easy to remove if he's not in the car, and he's SO much more relaxed and confident! It took some looking to find one that wasn't too wide to begin with, but this one is perfect for that space. Here's a link to the one I bought....https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K69DZWK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
