First - This forum represents nearly 15% of units sold - and I would bet many current SXP owners don't even know about this site. So - I guess how a person defines a "Subset" is relative. Second - KIA has yet to hit 100K units annualized production numbers. I have been through this in other posts - but they aren't there yet. They barely hit the 80K annualized production numbers before COVID hit. They have a long way to go to get that done. Third - if they have a ton of financial pressure right now - then producing as many fully loaded models as possible is the fastest way to bring in cash because the top trim models have the fattest margins - this is common knowledge in the automotive manufacturing industry. Finally - one of the best forms of advertisement (as we saw with all the automotive reviews) is getting top end models out roaming the streets. People will see them and want them. The base model Tellurides - especially the LX models - are not aspirational vehicles at all. They look cheap and do nothing to push the brand up market. EX and SX models do.
As to what the dealers want - that will vary widely. Some dealerships relish having top spec models on their lots with huge mark ups. Others (like mine) hate having to call their customers month after month and tell them that once again KIA isn't allowing orders to be entered into KFOS for what their customers want. Look at
@StephenCantrelle page and see the mix of orders he has placed for customers - they are overwhelmingly SXP models. Sure - every dealership would love to have inventory on their lots. But a frustrated customer base is a high cost to do that.
So yeah - I think we can all agree that they need to find a way to get unsold units into the hands of dealerships - but right now they are doing so at the expense of higher margin sold units for buyers that are most likely new to the brand that have been waiting between 6-12 months.
Personally - I would have loved to see KIA do a temporary over run of production at the expense of the outgoing Optima or
Sorento and get the backlog cleared. Instead they have focused on slowly growing to their new targeted production rate of 100K/year. Just think - if KIA had dedicated just one month of production at their West Point plant to Tellurides - what impact they could have had on the hottest selling product they have ever had.
