Consider the Price Gouging Officially Over

This was my reply when the dealership reneged on the sticker price.

Dane -- Thanks for the quote. But the quote is contradictory with the sticker price that you have on the car. Your website provides that information. Charging $6k over sticker is ludicrous and insulting.

Before you drone on about how sought after the car is, you seem to have forgotten that there are thousands of cars sitting on lots because there are unwilling buyers due to covid19. I am certain you know this. While I commend your tenacity in trying to seize an opportunity given the demand for the car, please understand, I don't need it that badly and I will wait until the market is flush with Dark Green Moss Kia Telluride SX with the Prestige package. More importantly, I will buy it from a dealer that is not looking to price guage me.

If you want to honor the sticker price on the car, then please let me know.
Great email. I'd love to see the reply you get. We went a different direction after seeing the absurd prices Seattle area dealers were demanding.

Ooh oooh, I think I have a winner! $10k “market adjustment” here in Atlanta! On a SX!

When it's May in Chicago and they're still sporting pictures of the car surrounded by snow on their inventory site, you know it's a slow market. The lower trims are sitting, and sitting based on what I see. Most of which are at or below MSRP now listed on their sites (even the typical offenders). The SX's aren't exactly flying either around here, some are still charging more than MSRP though.

Interesting you have SX's sitting on lots. You can't find one in the Seattle area. If you find an SX or SX-P on a dealer's web site, you soon find out it's a pre-sale and you'll never see it on a lot.

Not sure where in Chicago that person is. We were just gouged for $10k above MSRP in NW Chicago suburbs and told the salesman to jump in the lake!
LMAO!

Yes, I am an Economist and I said it will impact demand - however it will be very short lived. This will result in pent-up-demand.
There is a self-proclaimed “economist” on this thread that should be able to explain how all of these Tellurides starting to “pile up” will actually increase the demand over the coming weeks. He will also tell you how he knows that this global recession (potentially depression) will be short lived.
In time you will come to admit you were wrong.

well this aged well.. my only question is why @mrmac didn’t pm me and didn’t say go all in on the market in March haha

I had a fun call this evening. My wife and I tested an Ebony / Butterscotch SX this past Sunday out here in Northern Virginia. They were nice and had no issues with us bringing the 3 yr old along in her cars seat. At the time I figured "this car has been sitting here, surely I can get it for MSRP or close to it". They wanted 10K extra. We said thanks for the test drive, but no thanks. Their sales manager called me up this evening and asked if there was a way we could make a deal. I said well I already have a deposit in on the exact car I want from an out of state dealer, for MSRP + shipping + tax / doc fee. He scoffed at that basically. I pointed out that I probably would've bought the car with a 2-3K markup at the time because I hadn't really found this forum and hadn't even considered out of state dealers. TL;DR dealers in this area are doing pretty large markups $5K is the lowest I've seen...$6-$7K is about average with a few amazing $10K+. Good times!

I'm located in northern California, but have been looking at an impressive array of dealerships across the country. Unfortunately the dealer markup is still alive and well!

Based on my analysis, the COVID shutdown resulted in the production loss of about 10,000-12,000 vehicles over a 3 month period. Thankfully July is shaping up to be a monster month; it isn't over yet and it is already the biggest production month ever by a decent margin with over 8,000 vehicles. The deficit will take a while to recover from, but my suspicion is that things will start changing as we get into September if things continue to hold.. The market has been starved for inventory but there's a massive wave on it's way.

Perhaps more importantly, Kia revised dealer allocations for the 2021 model year. So some of the geographical imbalance should start rectifying itself. For example, for the month of July California has the most cars allocated of any state. That has not been the historical norm. It would also appear as though SX production has been increased as well, which is where the biggest gap has existed.

So it really must be region to region. I just picked up 2021 SX nightfall as it rolled off the trailer (with no pre-order) in upstate ny for MSRP + tax + DMV crap. Only add on was stupid nitrogen air in the tires I couldn’t negotiate out. And I got a great price on my trade.

it was probably the easiest car purchase I’ve had in 10 years.

Kia Dealerships in Nashville, TN are adding a 10K+ markup on-top of the listed MSRP price + add-ons for the Telluride. The factory sticker shows a little over 44.1K for the MSRP plus add-ons. However they are trying to sell it at 58k. The line item is listed as L.O.A. on the sticker with no additonal description or information. When asked, they blatantly stated that it was the result of Supply & Demand.
