Hello. New to the group. Looking at the 2021 version Telluride EX - AWD. We were looking at ordering it from the factory. We received a quote, and at the bottom, we found a premium charge of 5K, for the order. Can someone explain this charge? Is it negotiable?
I have heard of paying more than MSRP, but this seems rather steep. Should we keep looking or should we continue to work with the dealer. Btw, the dealer told us tthey are not a corporate deslership. I don’t know if that has anything to do with the charge, but thought I should include that. Thanks for your help.

The 5k is a dealer markup, the amount is different for every dealership. You can try to negotiate it, more than likely will not work. There is a good dealers thread here that lists multiple dealerships that sell at MSRP. Markups people have seen range from a couple grand all the way up to 10k even more. Do you want to pay 5k more than MSRP for a depreciating asset? Only you can answer that, if you want a specific trim/spec Telluride right away, be prepared to pay a markup.

If you list your location, someone might be able to chime in and recommend a dealer nearest you. A lot of people have placed orders out of state, due to local markups, myself included.

There are many dealers across the country who do not mark up. The dealer that I am working with charges MSRP, less any factory rebate.

Look at the thread called nice dealers you will see one in your area.

Can you give a link to that thread? I did a search and it came up empty. Thanks!

Hello. And Thank you! We are near Houston, Texas. Thanks for the info, you have helped a lot!
Since I posted this, I did a little search and found people who pay for their own shipping, and still come out ahead. Btw, we are Costco members, but know that the Telluride is not available for Costco pricing. However, there is a dealership that handles Costco members in our area. We may give them a shot as well, since they are close. This is our first experience in purchasing a high demand vehicle. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond.

Off the top of my head, I know Huffines Corinth in DFW lets you order at MSRP. They are a recommended dealer in that thread. Also, forum legend @StephenCantrelle works at Classic Kia Carrollton Texas, also in that DFW area. His dealership does charge some markups, but they are a high volume dealer and you might get a vehicle faster through him. Stephen provides fantastic service, that many forum members can attest to.

Haha I just sent her a pm..

@Katy_Tell I'm in Houston as well and so far recently found that Fort Bend Kia is doing custom order at MSRP but they don't accept Costco pricing. I was considering going with them but am interested in which dealership you found in Houston offers Costco pricing. I looked into Westside Kia but found their salesperson not that knowledgeable, was denied a test drive even though I was told on the phone they would let me, and they don't do custom orders. And I've read that someone had awful service issues at Beck & Masten Dealership damaged my car and lied

Hello

Parkway Family Kia in Kingwood

Thanks! Perhaps I shouldn't have taken "nice dealers" literally as the thread title. Just a minor problem with being an engineer... :)

This mega thread is very helpful, and takes a little bit to go thru, however, it'll save you tons of money. I'm still a noob here, so not sure if you can search through a specific thread.

Good luck on your search. We're also buying a K5 and won't be going with dealers that are charging over MSRP for the Telluride. Fortunately, the KIA dealer we are getting our telly from is only an hour drive away. I'm not going to reward dealers for lining their pocks with above MSRP prices.

You surely can search, in the top bar there is a search button and you can type the name of various towns or dealer names to see if it shown up in peoples post.

but I have noticed that people are placing respite sea to dealers and one dealer has sent you a PM.

Waiting for 5 weeks now for my Telluride. But that is fine since I am not in a crazy hurry. Just want to upgrade and sort of want what I want. ☺️

Hello

Parkway Family Kia in Kingwood

If you want MSRP, then order from Fort Bend Kia if they'll take your order (likely they have a long wait). Every other dealer in the Houston area including Parkway was charging large markups.

Else, order from a couple of the mentioned dealers in Dallas, and you can try Sterling Kia in Bryan. The latter had a small markup - but it wasn't too bad.

Else, hunt for your Telluride using the instructions in the thread beginning with "Three Ways..."

Good luck, enjoy the wait, or have fun hunting.

We were expecting to get it in March, but now they are saying next month. :) Once they tell you that, it just makes it that much worse to want what you want. :sneaky:

that is an insane amount of waiting. Sure the shutdown because of COVID-19 did nothing to help.

My dealer has extra allocation because they sell a lot of T’s i got mine at MSRP BUT all the extra allocation they get are a 3K adm.

personally, this is the first car I have ever paid MSRP for. I would never pay a mark up on any car. There are other vehicles out there that may not have all the same features but I that would be preferable to me over the feeling I GOT TAKEN.

I don’t understand those of you who have paid over MSRP. The Hype worked on some of you. But if money were no object I’d be looking at an Aviator.

It is. Our 2016 mazda cx-5 is running perfectly fine after a new engine @ 20k (warranty). Just want something bigger for camping and want something bigger in general. The cx-5 is nice, but I'm a bit cramped being 6'5. And the seats aren't too great for long hauls for me. The seats are too short in the leg support. It was fine on the test drive and sitting on it for 10 minutes at the dealer; however that doesn't translate well for 2+ hours of driving.

However, I really do love the sporty feeling of the mazda, even though it's not really that fast. Tradeoffs...

The telly SXP should fix all (most?) these things.

Night and day. You'll love the SXP. Won't handle as well as the CX-5 (not as sporty), but throw it in Sport mode and it will respond very well with a nice throaty rumble. Much quieter than the Mazda, and much more comfortable for a tall person. 6'5" is a few inches taller than me... but I still think you'll be more comfortable. Just have to get used to the grab handle and figure out the right seat position.

Sportshot2, noles1983, and anyone else who has commented. Thank you for your input concerning paying above MSRP. I wholeheartedly agree that one should be patient, do your homework, and consider all your options when purchasing a vehicle, and do not get caught up in the frenzy over the latest must have. They will depreciate, and the shine will fade. Be honest with yourself and try to decide on a vehicle that best fit your needs. If you have a trusted person in your life, seek their opinion. There are a lot of vehicles on the market from which to chose that are just as good. They just currently don’t have the bling.

With that said, I am currently in that boat described above. I chose the Telluride after doing a lot of research. Other choices at the beginning of my search were Honda (Pilot, Passport), Toyota (Highlander), Kia Sorrento. I also considered the options I needed based on my previous driving history, family allowance, etc. My wife helps me to keep things in perspective. We are discussing all matters concerning it. Like the people I have referenced, paying above MSRP is something we are very reluctant to do. Plus, it actually brings other great vehicles into play, if the markup is high enough.

So, bottom line, currently I am taking a breath, looking at dealerships in the good dealer category, reading about members own experiences, and suggestions, and moving forward. Btw, for most, the one ally we all have is time. We do not need to purchase a vehicle immediately. I know the temptation to buy is a lot higher if one needs a vehicle ASAP, but, a little prep, both educationally, and emotionally, can go a long way to making a better decision.

Thank you all for your input. Great forum. Glad I joined. Lot’s of good people on here.
