So my Quick update (re post 457 above) went well.
My vehicle is in the garage and I didn't want to leave it running while the update was performed, so I popped the hood and connected up my battery maintainer/trickle charger to the battery to ensure its voltage was maintained throughout the update without my having to leave the vehicle running. Done this 1000+ times, but still triple checked that I had the polarities right + to +, - to -, before connecting, so as not to fry the electrical by hooking up backwards. I carefully shut the hood without crimping the wires, to get rid of the hood open warning, out of an abundance of caution; but others have reported leaving the hood ajar with the warning message on during the update, and having no problems.
Got in the vehicle, one press of the Start button to turn on Accessory mode, system screen booted up, and I plugged in the USB to the center port marked USB in the console compartment. The system seemed to automatically read the USB with no action by me and brought up the Update confirmation prompts. I selected the Quick update, and away it went, with status updating on the screen. Came back 30 minutes later and the update was completed.
Before and after photos below. I note that there are new versions in all 4 categories (SW, FW, Nav App, and Map). Not sure what else the General update option would include. I asked the tech support via the KIA Canada office what the difference between Quick and General was, but answer was pretty vague. He indicated the Quick update should be sufficient and used in most cases, and the much longer General update (3+ hours) would only be used in rare cases where the system was having huge problems and requiring a total reload and reset.
My USB stick is the faster 3.0 (blue plug center), but it looks like the port in the vehicle is the slower 2.0 (white plug center) interface, so transfer speed limited to the slower 2.0 limit.
With the move to update 14.5 there are number of new options (for example, playing Nature Sounds while you drive lol) and other changes, and I am still figuring them all out. Things seem to be working ok, but the Speed Limit and School Zone indications are no longer showing (eg on my heads-up display), which they did previously with 13.5, so I need to figure out if a setting needs to be reset or what's up.
My UVO setup is also not fully completed and I need to talk with the Canadian tech support line on Monday when they are next open, to prove that I am really the registered owner lol!! I have the app on my phone and a registered account on the web site, but ran into problems with the UVO system assigned random access code when I tried to verify link with vehicle.
The UVO-generated access code is a mix of upper and lower case letters. It is pretty hard to tell the difference between I and l (first one is capital "I" as in Idiot, second one is lower case l as in loser). Hint the l (ell) is slightly taller than the I (capital eye). By the time I figured out which was which, I had used up my three tries, and was locked out. I am sure I am not alone in having run into that problem.
I'll also note that once you do the update with your USB stick, the UVO system seems to write a flag or something onto the stick so that the update can no longer be recognized should you want to redo the update for some reason. I'm not sure at what point in the update process that this occurs. Hopefully it will only occur at the end once the update is complete. But it may (if poorly designed) occur prior to the update being completed, in which case if you cancel the update for some reason, and then try to do it again by re-inserting the USB, the car system will not recognize the USB, and give you an error message something to the effect that "no valid files are found on the USB". For that reason you may want to NOT automatically delete the update on your hard drive (in addition to on the USB) which is an option in the download process, UNTIL you can confirm that the update was successful. Otherwise you will have to download it all over again, and rewrite to the USB. This tip may be useful to folks having trouble getting their USB recognized for some reason. YMMV.
I'm happy that there is the capability to download and install updates yourself from online, without the pain, time, cost of having to order a USB. But as a systems engineer in a past life, I get very frustrated by poorly documented software and programming practices. And not doing simple things like imbedding the update number and/or date in some part of the software / firmware / map version numbering, to make things a little more intuitive.
Hope something in all of this is of assistance to others, and avoids wasted time and needless frustration ....
