2020 Telluride AWD rear end jerking thumping and vibrating

You write at startup, this is normal for Korean gdi engines. And even with an increase in the number on the odometer and a decrease in temperature, the engine will work very loudly until it warms up, like a tractor. this is also the norm for gdi.
No, it doesn't. My engine has always purred like a kitten.

HaHaHa. Total rubbish!! My Stinger purred (Thanks for the quote Bev) from day 1. As does my friends and my colleagues, one who now has almost 100,000 miles in 2-1/2 years.

Chiming in to say I’ve noticed this on my 2021 SX AWD with less than 2k miles on it.

Fingers crossed it’s not a major issue but the symptoms are eerily similar to what’s described here so I’m not super optimistic. Dealer is checking it out today while they fix an unrelated camera flicker issue.

When things are good, I love my Telluride but after a series of small but non trivial issues I’m pretty jaded about the build quality.

Update on my situation.

Dealer has had my car since Monday. They confirmed they could feel the vibration and have been working with techline to diagnose and fix it. Sequence of events:

1. Road force balance of wheels. No issue found, vibration still exists
2. Removed/disabled rear differential. Vibration still exists
3. Removed rear drive shaft. Vibration went away

They have "emergency ordered" a new drive shaft. Apparently there were only 2 available in the country, but I got one of them. Hopefully arrives and is fixed by end of week.

As a side note, my dealership (Halleen Kia in North Olmsted, OH) has been great and has made this whole thing more bearable. The service manager has been very responsive and apologetic about the whole thing and very accommodating. I live 35 miles away but he sent a driver out to my house to drop off a loaner (brand new Sorento off the lot) and pick up my Tell. He's moving as fast as he can, but has told me that for now all 2021 Telluride repairs have to be coordinated/approved with techline so he can only do what they tell him to. Hopefully we've arrived at a solution (and hopefully this case helps Kia figure out a recall or service bulletin for this issue).

I do need to talk to Consumer Affairs about it though, just to see how they can make me feel better about owning this for the long run. Any tips on working with them are much appreciated! (@Austin3000! I think you said you talked with them?)

I wish you the best. You should document everything on your vehicle and keep records. They can print out the conversations with Tech Line.
Sadly, Kia still seems to be denying that they have an issue with the AWD's. It sounds like they are putting the responsibility on to the dealers.
I meet with someone from Kia today along with my service manager. I'm at the point, they fix it or buy it back.
I did not buy a $50k vehicle just to drive a loaner.
Best of luck.

It’s really unfortunate that Kia doesn’t have this under control yet. It seems that the fix is pretty consistently the rear drive shaft, at least according to others in this thread.
One would think that after many similar complaints, Kia would at least have the process down and the parts ready to go, if not issue a recall with associated VIN’s 😕

I left my Telluride at the Dealership this morning. The Kia rep finally made it to town. We test drove my vehicle and he agreed there was an issue. I told him a lot of people with the AWD were having issues since last year and I guess he thought I was ignorant and tried to tell me that each vehicle was different on the drive shaft issue and I called him on it. I told him Kia has known of this issue since last year and that the Hyundai Palisade (same company ownership) has been having the issues. We'll see what they do but if they keep trying to feed me BS, I told them I would contact an attorney and everyone on this forum and Hyundai Palisade's forum and get a class action suit against them.
People should not pay this kind of money for vehicles and they have a problem and taking forever for them to fix it. My dealership has already had one for 4 months in the shop that Kia was supposedly buying back. Same issue.
Kia is trying to dump the problem on the dealers but we all know they are putting the vehicles with issues out on the lots.
Wish me luck but don't buy their excuses. Stand firm.
Good luck to you.

KIA has produced nearly 40K AWD Tellurides this year and over 25K last year. Have there been some issues? Yes - is it a widespread problem based on the sheer number of AWD Tellurides produced? No. Only a handful of users on this site have complained about it. That said - it would annoy the crap out of me if it happens to my AWD Telluride I am picking up Saturday...but this isn't a production wide issue.

Sigh - the new drive shaft did not fix the issue. So who knows what’s next.

Although not widespread, it seems there’s sufficient examples of this to suggest some systemic issue. I’d also venture to guess that the prevalence is higher but many folks don’t know it’s happening (mine was subtle and I knew to look for it, but others might ignore it).

I think there are a lot of people that don't realize they have this issue or don't think it's related to this driveshaft problem. It remains to be seen whether this is a widespread issue.

We have 10k+ members here that is only a fraction of the total ownership.

Also remember some of the issues are very subtle and need a very observant ear to hear. My opinion is that most don't hear it and if/what they hear and feel they chalk it up as road noise and vibration due to imperfections on the road.

I understand your argument, it just seems that there are enough people (I see this issue on the FB forums too) with the same / similar issue for Kia to have a better response than they currently do. They seem to have put out TSB’s for much less.
It’s just surprising and a bit concerning to me that this thread is over a year old, and new vehicles are still coming off the line with this issue.

They changed out my rear driveshaft and differential. That cured mine
Have them change the rear diff as well. Your earlier post said they removed it, but I don’t think you said it was replaced.
It’s possible both are required for a fix.

I agree with you here.

Next step per techline is to replace the AWD coupler, so I've got a few more days of waiting now for that part.

I've asked about just doing the differential too, but since they are just going by whatever techline tells them, it probably won't happen until after they see what happens with the coupler.

I went to dealership today, and as expected they seem to not find anything wrong, and said the vibration seems like it would be in any other awd. I am not sure about that diagnostic, however they reset the computer again, and it seemed to get rid of vibration at startup now. However, once I drove off the dealership, I felt it at high speeds around 65-70mph right under the driver side floor board, which made me wonder if the tire is out of balance even. I am going to try another dealership and see what they have to so. It is very obvious to me, but apparently not to the techs.

Try another dealership and see what they say. Make sure you are well documented and have copies of everything.

The first thing I did was go to Discount Tire and had them check my tires and they said they were good and didn't need balancing. Then I took it to the dealership.

Don't let the dealership give you the run-around. You know your vehicle and how it drives.
Good luck.

Yes I agree with you and figured out soon enough what they are trying to do. I have a appointment scheduled for next Tuesday. I will keep everyone posted.

And... the coupler only sort of worked. The vibration went away at 67mph, but now just starts at 72mph. For anyone keeping score:

- New driveshaft did not fix
- New coupler (with new driveshaft) did not fix

We're waiting to hear what's next.

I just got mine out of the shop yesterday evening and only had a little stretch of road but did manage to get up to 89 mph. The Kia rep was down last week and they said it was my right front tires. I had tires checked at Discount and when I first had it in the shop the service department should have checked it.
I did not feel any vibration and it drove like a luxury suv.
I hope the fix was as easy as that but today I will take it out on the highway and give it a good test drive and let my husband check it out to make sure I'm not dreaming it's fixed.
Such a hassle for a fricking tire that should have been found back in August.

Wow such a simple fix. Glad it’s all sorted out for you! Hope for many more smooth rides.

I feel the same thing that it has something to do with the tire as the vibration feels mostly under the driver side floor board.
