4G or 3G Hotspot for Telluride

Any one hear if there will be a hotspot built into the Telluride like some other 3 row cross overs? ie. Ford explorer, Chevy Traverse, Subaru Ascent.

I'm not sure if that tells us anything..... It could be reflecting the 4G LTE signal and charge from your phone.....
To have its OWN hotspot it has to have a SIM card and an attachment to your current phone plan etc. Have not seen evidence of that so far...

Most likely the vehicle has a separate dedicated telemetric unit. The same one that will call 911 etc, Those are private KIA only paid for communication hardware etc.
Public WiFi and data in your car for your personal use is a whole separate subscribed type SIM card type thing and may or may not be present on the new Telly…..

I’m just curious, why are people interested in the builtin WiFi when ATT sells a Harman Spark and Verizon has something similar that plugs into the OBDII port? And of course there is the phone hotspot. What additional does builtin offer that I’m missing?

Personally I would love for the Telluride to have a built in WIFI. I'm still stuck with a limited data service plan so when my kids are using tablets on long trips they would be able to go online, specifically to watch YouTube videos. Also, my wife can work online without hitting our data limits.

But how would the builtin hotspot from Kia be better than the aftermarket hotspot that works in any car?

It wouldn't necessarily WORK better, but its always there, and you don't have to "Bring it along"...More than likely this is going to be the main family mover vehicle in the stable and it needs this kind of tech to stay up with the mini van converts and soccer moms and dads..... Nobody needs more junk in their purse or stuff laying in precious storage areas, or OH crap, the hotspot is in another car !
I don't personally need it, but this is a hot commodity with families and people who work out of their cars, trust me. A lot of times it can be added to your current cell carrier for say 10.00 a month with unlimited data depending on your overall plan....Its a pretty big omission if not available or included....

The major carriers are claiming that 5G will be coming out sometime this year which will likely make the need for a car hotspot of much less importance. It is my understanding that a 1 Gigabyte movie can be downloaded to a device in 3 seconds on a 5G network! Smoking fast so your phone can be your hotspot.

I think the Harman Spark plugs into the onboard diagnostic port in the car and can stay put. Then if the carriers upgrade their bandwidth or offer something new you don’t get stuck with what was builtin.

Well that may be true but as you remember 4G LTE was very spotty for quite a long time when it came on board. There will still be millions of people on 4G for many years to come .....5G will take all new equipment and it will be expensive out of the box and it will probably only debut in certain big cities to start .....I don't believe you'll see 5G in vehicles for at least 2 years.....

I’ve heard that the inbuilt WiFi is better as they use an external antenna to pick up the signal and then an internal antenna to provide the WiFi signal. I’m not sure this would make a noticeable difference, but this was one of the advantages discussed when I brought up the why not just use your phone’s hotspot functionality question.
