I like the Telluride. Heck I have one coming in. I hope it's as good as advertised. I also own a Highlander, a 2006. If the Telly lasts long with as few probems/repairs as the Highlander I'll be a happy camper. But to say the Highlander is not a good vehicle is laughable. As far as sales are concerned, if's and but's..... Toyota owns a major stake in Subaru just as Hyundai does in Kia. Since you want to count those units I'll throw in Subies and off we go in to a pissing contest
When did I ever say that the Highlander (either the new or old model) was not a good model (you sure like reading into things which are not there)?
But now that you've brought it up, the latest Highlander (the newest of the bunch) has only fared middling in comparison tests.
Not only getting beaten by the Telluride and Pallisade, but in some instances, by either the Ascent or the ancient Pilot (such as in the Motor Trend comparison); think the chances are good that the new Pilot will also beat the Highlander.
And that's with the Highlander having switched to Toyota's latest TNGA platform whilst the Telluride is still on H/K's old platform (will eventually be switched to the new N3 platform like for the latest Sorento).
The difference between the relationship between H/K and Subaru is that one has a controlling stake and the other does not.
H/K have an ownership stake in Rimac - does that mean they can include Rimac sales? lol
The Telluride and Pallisade share numerous components - most importantly, the platform and powertrain; the Highlander and Ascent do not.
Otoh, the Supra and the Z4 share the BMW platform and powertrain - guess that means that BMW can include Supra sales in its sales count.
Money! that's what floats my boat. It's what floats Kia's boat and certainly floats Toyota's boat. I understand you weren't comparing sales numbers., No one is that dumb. Or is there?
And as previously stated, the Telluride/Palisade combo makes more $ than the Highlander/Kluger.
