California Telly Owners! *tips, recommendations, etc.*

I live in the SF Bay Area, I too ordered from I-25 in CO. I was also quoted $1,300 for an open transport. I received the vehicle two nights ago, its super dirty, however after inspecting I do not see any paint chips or marks. I plan to take to a local shop to have them do paint correection, apply Paint Protection Film, ceramic window tints and then apply a ceramic coating to the paint as well. The car will shine better than it arrived at the dealer from day 1. When my vehicle arrived, it was placed in the middle of the truck with the front facing the front of the truck. Luckily, no damage noted. That's my experience.
Post pictures when you have it all detailed out!

Thanks @svm and @JRebel fo sharing your experiences! Would you mind sharing the names of the transportation companies that were assigned to you as well? It seems that I-25 works with a broker that assigns different companies to different customers on a random basis. Did you do any research on the companies that were assigned to you?
I took recommendation from @LAT here by using moveauto and pretty happy with them. Stephenie & other staff are very patient with me rescheduling a few times and answered all my questions.

  • 11/18 Car is delivered! Went ahead to book DMV & smog check appointment. Filled out reg 343.
  • 11/19 Smog check + DMV visit in a row. It's surprisingly smooth process and I walked out with my CA plates.
Question, where did you get your car smogged? I went to one station and because the car has so low miles it didn't have enough data to pass. I'm between sac and the bay.

I went to Sunnyvale discount smog. Guy said the same thing I need to drive 200 miles etc but it did pass at the end.

What was your odemeter of time of read? Someone on a different thread said theirs was reading 86. So that’s wayyyy better than the guy telling me I needed 1,000 miles.

Thanks for your reply! I got a quote from moveauto but it was $200/$400 more expensive for open/enclosed transports than the quote that I-25 gave me. Wasn't that the case for you?

I was like 20+ miles only. I literally went to smog check the next day my car arrived :)

Nope, I got much lower price than i25 (they asked for like $2k/$3k for open/closed) so I went with moveauto. I think anywhere from $1.2k - 1.5k for open is a fair market price from CO to norcal. If i25 is $1300 I'd just go with them to streamline the shipping without needing to schedule yourself.

I paid $1,900 thru i25 for closed transport.

Ill take it to work a couple of days and try back at the smog station.
Or take a short road trip on the weekend. Still have time since you got it just before Thanksgiving.

I made a short road trip back from i25 Kia back to Bay Area over the weekend and registered today, so sharing my experience for those thinking about driving back from Colorado. Details on the timeline of purchase can be found in my signature.
  • i80 route was very clear as of early December (no snow/no crazy wind). Apparently record warm day(s) in Colorado.
  • I stayed overnight near Denver International Airport after taking a red-eye, got a Lyft to the dealership the next morning (arranged by them; thank you Carlos), and just picked up the keys (all documentations were completed over email/Zoom/mail).
  • Drove to SLC/Wendover the first day, and from there directly to Bay Area.
  • Total 19 hours drive (clocked in about ~1300 mi).
    • This is with keeping below 3000rpm in mind for break-in period. Average MPG for the whole trip was around 25.5.
  • Shout out to Waltzing Kangaroo in Fort Collins, CO for their delicious Aussie pastries. Also Costco in Fort Collins, CO had some pretty good wine selection if anyone is interested. The huge Costco in SLC was pretty interesting to walk around as well.
Downside from the drive was that I got a small chip on the windshield from all the trucks passing through i80. Also, a bit of bugs and pebbles entered the AC/radiator area so I'd need to figure out protection there for future.

The overall process was really smooth purchasing out of state. I wrote in another thread (Registering in CA) about my registration experience since I had some time in between my actual purchase and pick up. Let me know if there's any question I can help answer.

Why are people getting smog tests on brand new cars at all?
Someone else posted here that you can just pay a smog abatement fee on late model cars instead, but everyone else keeps saying that they did a smog test instead.

Seems like a waste of time, money and confusion.

Because CA DMV wants it. A couple of people on the forum tried to register out of state new cars without smog test, but had to get smog test anyway before getting their registration.

That is fully illogical. It sounds like people at the DMV are confused if they were asking for it. I understand that the state wants money, but that’s what the smog abatement fee is for. Getting a smog test on a new car doesn’t even benefit the state in any way.

Is there anything posted on the DMV site that says a brand new car being registered in California has different smog requirements based on the state it was purchased in?

What does logic have to do with anything?? Seems like people at DMV are not confused about requiring smog test.

Update - Why do regulations require logic?

What regulation?
All I see is that people posted that the DMV clerk they saw verbally told them they needed it.
I don’t see anything on the DMV site that confirmed that what they were demanding was actually valid and required by any regulation.
In fact, the DMV link I posted says the opposite.

CA out of State registration

You were looking at the rules for an in state auto.

The first thing that link says is:
“A nonresident vehicle is a vehicle last registered in another state or country”

These are brand new cars being first registered to a California resident.
The first owner is registered in California. Only the point of sale is in another state.

The scenario in your link is for used cars that had previously been registered in another state.
These cars were never registered anywhere else.
