California Telly Owners! *tips, recommendations, etc.*

Hey Sephghast. I too am looking at exact setup like yours! I want the Gravity Gray w EX w bench seat with Nightfall edition. Are you getting EX without Nightfall edition and dealership doing conversion? How much extra? Keep us updated with pics when you get it.
Paying $3k extra for the conversion. Pricey but YOLO…? Also you need to buy the wheels separately but i’ll sell the stock ones to recoup costs.

Yeah, I’m prob getting ripped off a bit but i25 has no markup, so it evens out.

Remember that California DMV will penalize ($$) you if you do not register the Telluride within 20 days of entering California. My purchase date from i25 is when I signed the documents more than a week before I picked up the vehicle and stayed in CO another week before returning to CA. Local DMV office originally used the purchase date from i25 title papers as the start date, so when I went to the DMV, I corrected the entry date. Either DMV receives documents from i25 or you go to DMV to start the registration process within the 20 days.

@SLPV how did you correct the entry date? Is that is easy to do with the DMV? this is the one step of the purchase process I am not looking forward to and AAA cannot help

When you go to the DMV and if the i25 paperwork is already received, you just tell them the vehicle entry date. If no paperwork, you start the registration process with your application and probably do a 30 temporary registration until paperwork arrives. For me, i25 collected the CA registration fee, so I have to pay the other CA fees. Also, you need a smog test first and DMV will do a physical vehicle inspection.

I bet Kia would have been plenty happy to take that 3K and given you the bench seat and the nightfall direct from the factory. It's dumb that they don't offer a bench option in the EXP or SX imo.

They should simplify their lineup and make three trims. LX, EX, SX. Then let people choose bench or captains chairs and nightfall or no nightfall in every trim. If the nightfall upgrade is a little more expensive in the LX and EX than the SX because it is an upgrade to LED headlights so be it. Having Trim levels constrained by seat configuration just complicates things.

Yes I totally agree. I would rather have a bench seat with all that an SX offers. With bench seat it gives more options to travel w more people when friends and family are in town.

Hey all... after months of searching for the right build with no markup, I'm giving up and planning to order one. Right now, seems like my best be is the i25 Kia in CO, and having it shopped here when it's delivered. If possible, I'd like to avoid buying out of state and having to deal with FedExing paperwork back and forth and multiple DMV trips... anyone have any luck with a no markup custom order with a dealer in CA, anywhere? Thanks!

Salinas Kia. Rally Kia.

Be prepared to wait several months. A lot longer than i25.

I ordered mine from i25. Also located in Cali.

As things look now it seems the most logical choice, with the 2022 transition and chip shortage slow down and only one factory that produces the Telluride. Make a road trip of it, or pay to ship $1,300 to $1,500. I had no FedEx issues, because I flew out to Denver and drove Telluride home to SD, did paperwork at dealership.

DMV, make sure you get a smog check, form 343 done, proof of insurance and have registration docs sent to a designated DMV in CA. *(I did this...but, i25 registration clerk sat on my docs for 19 days and didn't send until I inquired, after being rejected at DMV.) Docs were sent to DMV FedEx and arrived the next day, DMV issued me a 30 day temporary registration. I still need to go back and finish the process. I think that is why i25 gives you a 60 day registration, as "those out of state folks" get a certain priority...

● Go to DMV before 20 days has elapsed after returning to CA, if going dealer pick route. After 20 days, $500 fine. (Note: DMV relies on the date entering CA that YOU provide on form 343. The registration cost(s) were about $900, with no fine in my case.

$900 in registration cost!? That sounds too high for Telluride in California.

Did DMV charge you GWVR weight fee?

No. Running the SX-P (cost, taxes, vehicle type) information through the DMV website calculator it matches attached receipt. Checked with another Colorado/California purchaser and the numbers are the same. Calculate New Resident Fees

Why do think California has a 70 billion dollar surplus in the budget......

Couldn't get Rally Kia to even talk about the Telluride. They kept pushing a Palisade and seemed clueless. I spoke with many dealers in SoCal and all of them had some BS to feed me including "it isn't possible to order from Kia" and "that build doesn't exist" and of course, 11K markup. In the end I went with i25, but still waiting on an actual order because Kia isn't taking orders at the moment.

I believed your California registration fees should be closer to $649. The $280 use tax is the California sales tax which would be the difference of the sales tax that i25 collected and forwarded to CA. Mine came to $617.

Absolutely correct. That's what I was thinking..

The use tax of $280 is one time cost and the yearly registration should be $649 (and bit lower each year).

@SLPV caused me to pull out all the paperwork and look at the numbers again. Spot on, in Section 6 of DMV 343 form, I put the MSRP + Doc fee + tax assessed as the as the purchase price, It is the amount the DMV looks at, basically, I taxed myself at 55k, instead of 50k @ 7.75%.

I have to return to the DMV to finish the process as they didn't have the registration docs from i25 on 5/12/21 my first go at it. I will amend 343 to fix the over tax and hopefully be finished with the DMV on this registration.

Thanks to all on this.

Glad to help. Let us know how it turns out.

I just picked up my Telly from i25 and they told me that they send me the documents directly and did not need a DMV address to send docs. Am I missing something? Do I need to reach back out to them? I paid in full so no financing and they said they would mail me title.

Thanks

Yahoo!!

Nope, there is no lien holder (KIA finance, Credit Union, ect). You are the title holder, so pink slip/Title and other documents should go to you, once the i25 registration clerk puts the package together.

The only concern I see is to make sure the documents get to you within the 20 days (after) entering CA with the Telluride, so you can go to the DMV (one time) to complete CA registration and avoid late registration fines.

I know i25 provides a 60 day Colorado temporary registration, but it doesn't help the CA 20 day requirement. Maybe have the i25 Title Clerk "Mike" confirm with an email & tracking number when the documents are sent out, or they may use snail mail.

i25 sat on my documents (my credit union is the lien holder, DMV sends pink slip/Title to them), I only found out on day 19 after DMV said they didn't get the documents. A quick email to salesperson and finance person and documents were sent overnight to the designated DMV.

I actually went back today....after waiting three more weeks as DMV said "we will send a letter to you when the documents come in", didn't happen. That's the first thing the DMV clerk said to me today, promptly showed her the UPS proof of delivery on 5/13/21...of course mine was sitting in a pile with eight other out of state buyers document packages, "That were not entered into the recieved log book."

So, my experience:
Waited 3 weeks, had to contact i25 to send documents.
Waited 3 more weeks for DMV to notify me documents arrived, they didn't.

Just a lot of follow up on people not doing their jobs. Either way, it is done and I recieved a credit on the "use tax" of $356.51, after showing the correct numbers from the purchase agreement.
