My 2020 Kia Telluride check engine light came on. Took it to auto zone who diagnosed a code of P0597. My heat seems to be working ok. Check engine light turned off on its own after leaving auto zone but came back on enroute home. Dealership wants big $$ to diagnose. Help. Where do I start with potential issue and what to replace first? Thermostat heater control replacement?? Please advise.

The code: P0597 is a generic OBD code. Therefore internet diagnosis is in full effect... There are times whereas there might be two different (more pinpointed) manufacturer's codes, against a generic OBD code. Comparing a KIA diagnostic machine against the generic...
Having been in this business, looks as if your thermostat is not working correctly. Modern thermostats are assisted by a heating element controlled by the engine computer. Most usually the heating element inside the waxstat fails. A new thermostat usually solves the issue.
However, if your issue is missing the controlling voltage from the engine computer (probable but not likely) the generic scan will not show that.
Colder than normal engines (most common result of a flagging thermostat) use more fuel. More fuel equals more gas burned and less than optimal MPG.
(great for race cars, bad for MPG and engine longevity)
