Dealer Markup

The dealer I went to had a 5
$5,000 markup. My daughter bought one of the first ones out last year and paid $2.000 under the MRSP. I want one but not until I can buy it for at least the MRSP. Till then I will drive my 15 year old Chrysler mini van, still runs great.

It is outrageous what KIA is doing right now with the sale price $5,000 over MSRP and then tax on that extra $5,000 as well, how stupid does KIA believe we are

I find the practice of upselling the price on a vehicle may be a good profit option for KIA today however in the long run it is the worst PR (public relations) move the company could possibly make. It demonstrates there is no ethics and no accountability to the character values of the company. I'm seeing posts indicating +$12,000 MSRP in Dallas and a lot of posts from +$3,500 to +$5,000 MSRP in many locations around the country so this practice is systemic within KIA. Since we all know all too well it is consumers that drive the success of a company then consumers should now show their opinion of such unethical practices and purchase your vehicle from anyone EXCEPT KIA. Shame on you KIA how disappointing.

Yawn. Happy complaining. There are many resources on this forum about how to find the best deal on a Telluride. Read the thread titled "Three Different Ways..." and take those actions if you wish.

Markups are prevalent, they can often be negotiated, and you're not going to pay invoice for the Telluride. And, it is way different than charging $50 for a gallon of gas after a storm (to use your inane analogy.) Dealers are independent franchises, so walk away from the ones with high markups, and find a dealer with a lower, more reasonable markup. Perhaps Kia should have just added $10k to the base price and then dealers would be offering discounts. Then, no one would be complaining about markups. Now that would be ironic.

All the dealers in the SF Bay Area and LA Area are charging anywhere between $2k - $6k mark up above the MSRP. I called a dealer in Houston, TX and they are not doing that. CA is the only state that it is charging extra for this car. I guess is the law of supply and demand.

Nope in NJ there is a dealer charging up to 12000 mark ups. This was about 8/2020. Its crazy they can go up so high. Nonwonder they had the most tellurides available than the other dealers close by. Insane...

For the record...KIA isn't doing any markups. The independent dealerships are. They are free to adjust the MSRP as they see fit. As you know MSRP stands for Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price. As others have said - do your homework and find a different dealership. I am traveling a couple hundred miles to get what I want at MSRP. It is worth a cheap plane ticket to deal with an honest dealership. And maybe next calendar year you will be able to find one at Invoice - but won't be this year.

I have to laugh when I read complaints about dealerships charging above MSRP. It's called supply and demand, and it's a wonderful thing! I love the fact that I have the freedom to choose to buy something, or choose not to buy something. I love to see success! I love to see people and businesses succeed! I applaud Kia for designing and manufacturing such a highly sought-after vehicle. Kia and their dealership network are now being rewarded, and that's awesome! Thank god I live in a country where I am free to choose!

In 1557 Thomas Tucker penned “A fool and his money are soon parted”. Still applies today

I still believe the margin for KIA on SX/P is below the average margin for the rest of the T lineup. By limiting the number of SX/P available they increase their overall margins by adding things like the the $1295 NF package. About $90 of that goes to the dealer and the rest to KIA. The additional manufacturing cost to change some wheels and parts to other parts is not that great.

You May never be able to find a SX/P at invoice because KIA is restricting supply. Seems like a NF addition at $1295 more is much easier to obtain than a regular SX/P

Try finding almost any vintage of “Pappy Van Winkle“ bourbon and you’ll understand. Supply restrictions keep the Open market at unrealistic levels. You can find all the Jim Beam you want but Pappy’s chooses to control supply to insure an ongoing premium price for a very good product but it’s still just a bourbon. The Telluride is still just an SUV and a bit underpowered in my opinion.

There are plenty on the shelves where I have a residence. I just won't pay the price. 😂

I think it’s a reach to say Kia is restricting supply of SX-Ps, they are just producing more of the most profitable units. And there is never enough power for the enthusiast crowd.

I have a telluride on order with hillside kia. If paying over msrp was my only option, I'd buy something else.

THE MARKUPS ARE INSANE IN NJ. There are some dealers who's website won't show you their price unless you fill out a form. So if you don't and show up to the dealer you really get that sticker shock. I know Jack Daniel's had vehicles with up 12,000 grand over MRSP. Fette Kia at least posts the mark ups which saves time while shopping. I attached some pics off their site. Still waiting for my Black Cooper S from Nutley Kia. No Mark ups no hassle great dealership if you are still looking and willing to leave a deposit. Well, they certainly win the chutzpah award for posting their markups on their website.

I went with Nutley Kia also. No games, and Ken was a real straight shooter. I've heard that Liberty Kia in Ramsey and Motion Kia in Hackettstown also charged MSRP at least at one time, but I'm not sure if that's still the case.

You can try Scott Harvey Kia in Ewing Twp., NJ. I worked with Jeff Seiken.

Probably tired of calls about it and having to tell the markup. Saves them time to not answer the phone. Saves shoppers time too. But, they don't know how many lost sales they had.

Los Angeles dealers have 60..80 tellurides, all stupidly over MSRP.

Ramsey charges markups too. Went there as well but not crazy like 4000 to 6000 markups.

When it all calms down we’ll get a Kia. In the mean time we bought a Honda Ridgeline RTL-E which is below invoice and good resell.

Hard decision but dealers are asking for too much money for Telluride.
