• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Total shot in the dark

Im looking to find the power wire that triggers the LED's in the door handle when you unlock and turn off the vehicle. My goal is to setup a light strip under my running boards and need to trigger it. my goal is to run a basic 30a 12v relay with 12v coming from the battery or some other source. The problem i am running into is i have no way to trigger it. I first thought about running it to the map/dome light since those do power on when you unlock/turn off the vehicle, but i dont want the running boards to turn on when i use them in the car while moving. I was going to probe around in the door jam with the harness from the cabin to the door itself but here comes another problem. Once the door is open the door handle light turns off. If anybody has any thoughts or know what wire this is please chime in. Thanks

I am pretty ignorant when It comes to wiring. But, instead of using the door handle lights, couldn’t you splice the light strip into the wiring the operates the interior lights when you first OPEN a door? Would that work for you?

Here's an easy solution for you - use the same wiring instructions for the Illuminated Front Door Sills.

Attached are the instructions to install a left hand and right hand front door sills that will illuminate when each door is open. You can use the same logic for your running board lights so they can turn on independently - left vs right. Added below some pics I took during the door sill installation.

I'm not an electrician but the interior fuse panel has 2 connectors that you need to tap into. Connector "C" appears to be the ground (same fuse panel wire for both sides - red wire from door sills) and Connector "D" appears to be the power (two different fuse panel wires - right & left - black wire from door sills).

Good luck!

I will dive a little deeper later, thx for the info. Right away though it doesn't tell me what I'm tapping into, also does not say if it's on/off. What if they just stay on? Doesn't help my problem. Also I would like them to turn on as I walk to the vehicle not just when I open the door. Ill look again and do some Googlefu with door sills.

Yes and no. I first thought about that but I would like to have the proximity light function. As you walk up to the car with the key in your pocket the door handle light turns on, so would the running board lights not the interior light (dome, map, or cargo). Once the car is unlocked (pressing the unlock button on the handle itself or key fob) then the interior lights turn on. (Dome, map, cargo). Also when I go to use my interior lights the running boards will turn on so this will be a problem if I am driving and use one of the interior lights.

EDIT sorry i read it wrong i skipped right over the open door part. yes this can work

I'm sure it's the same connection for when you open the door and the dome lights turn on - close the door and the dome lights turn off.

The illuminated door sills turn on and off the same way.

This has nothing to do with manually turning on your dome light.

Anyway, good luck

If that is the case then that would work. I wouldn't get proximity light but good enough. Thanks a bunch

I really want the proximity lights on though not just when i open the door. Hopefully this tap will turn on once i unlock the car too. I will start probing with a volt meter once i get home and rip everything out tricky part will be testing if the unlock will trigger the that circuit to power not just when door is open but on once it is unlocked and stays on until the door is closed. Also staying on once the car is turned off and i close the door then unlock for it to turn off. this would be best case. Thanks for the input (y) i didnt even think about the door sills yet
