• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... I can't stand the emergency brake fix. Every time I shut it off, it locks up the brakes and every time I start and move the car it clunks loudly and jerks. Sounds like I am driving a piece of junk.
Is there a way to bypass this, or just buy a Toyota?
This is a 2024 Telluride SX Prestige X-Line.

It is called a parking brake. Many manufacturers have they feature and automatically apply the parking brake when the car is in park or when the drivers door opens. The noise is really not that loud unless you have another problem.

My wife's Lexus (Toyota) does the same thing and there is no way to permanently disable it. Sorry.

I remember reading someplace that if you step on the brake when shutting the vehicle off, it doesn't allow the E-brake to engage..
.

You'll see this increasingly with each new model from each Mfr.
I'm old enough to remember the Fords that wouldn't stay in park during the early 1980's. Lots of lawsuits.
Product liability, more correctly "exposure" is what makes producers incorporate certain things we don't care for.

There was a time that attorney's that sought $$ for "wrongful injury" were looked down upon and given the moniker "Ambulance Chaser." McDonald's coffee in the lap anyone?
Now it's one of the more lucrative area's of law. :>((

Removing our freedoms, one lawsuit at a time.
P.S. My wife's Toyota also applies the parking brakes automatically.

Went & found that post, hope it helps..

" The EPB will automatically engage when you shut off the vehicle. Not too much of a concern for me being in Texas, however there is a workaround. If you press and hold down on the EPB button and then turn off the engine it won't engage. Tried this on mine and the EPB was off when restarting the vehicle. "

EPB button?
I've only ever taken my car to the dealer once, to get all the recalls checked. I specifically waived the parking brake software upgrade. The jerks put it on anyway. Now, on several occassions since then when I've started the vehicle, and shifted from Park into gear (D or R) the brake does NOT automatically disengage.

If Kia ever hopes to get past the cut-rate, second-class car company reputation, they need to step up their service to be worthy of not being called a crappy car company. Well, that and clean up their act with Kia financing. There are other threads on that nightmare.

Once in park and open the door the parking brake will be applied. And if parking on a hill I will apply it will my front is still on the brake.

I tried all the suggestions, stepping on the brake while shutting off the car, holding down the EPB button while shutting off the car. Still locks up and clunks loudly when re-starting. any other suggestions?

Anyway you can you record this clunk noise from outside the vehicle near the rear wheel?

It might be worth going back to the dealership and explaining how bad the fix is. They might have an updated solution or be able to adjust it for you. I wouldn't recommend bypassing it yourself, since it could mess with the car’s safety systems.

I will try to make a video soon, Thanks!

I have been trying the other suggestions, and it seems like holding the EPB button down while shutting the car off may work. I am still trying to make a video of the clunk when I don't use the other suggestions. Will post a video soon. Thanks

The electric parking brake should sound like an electric motor not a clunk. When you park the car you should always keep your foot on the brake while putting the car in park and still hold the brake until the parking brake is set. You can get a clunk when shifting the car out of park if there is tension on the transmission

I don't have tension on the transmission. You can see the caliper stuck to the rotor when trying to back out of the garage, and then it releases with a clunk. Still trying to get a video of it. Thanks
