• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... My 2022 Telluride SX AWD (and, btw, I love this car) will not brake to avoid hitting a tree or a pedestrian at low speeds. Took it to the dealer for some other work and they checked it out, did sfw update and calibration to "reactivate the system." However, I can still run right into a padded trashcan with no front braking. Same for the rear - they tell me if there is a moving/walking person to the rear it will brake - I've not managed to test that. {note: I'm certain that forward collision active assist setting is enabled} Dealer, oddly, seems unsure of what this car should do in terms of anti-slow-collision braking.

Question: Should the Telluride stop me from running into a tree or a pedestrian at low speeds?

Thanks for your sharing what you know on this topic...

The padded trash can isn't a threat. Try running into a walking pedestrian or a stationary tree and let us know how it reacts. Curious to see what happens.

The forward collision avoidance system is specifically trained on vehicles, cycles, and pedestrians. It will not recognize or react to trees or trash cans.

As always, I recommend not trying to test the system. Read the manual, understand how the system works and understand its limitations. Do not try at-home tests. They are not helpful.

Roger that. Interesting that it gives me all kinds of visual dash warning and beeping but will let me drive right into a parked car or a tree or a box.

You guys are correct, it is not at all designed to stop you from hitting a parked car or a wall, but only certain shapes or moving things (such as a pedestrian). Also generally will not activate if you are doing less than 6 mph or if you already have any braking pressure. It is a very discriminating system!

And thanks: I did go back and read manual pages 5-55 thru 5-68 specifically on the whole FCA system.

By comparison, I've been in a Lexus SUV that will not let you run into a car or a wall - it brakes well before you hit any stationary object, incl a trash can or stack of cardboard boxes. In fact if you have a bike rack on the back of the car it will not even let you back up until you turn off the rear avoidance.

In summation, I guess I'll keep driving the way I always have - which is to not run into stationary things. I can do that. But honestly, I'd prefer it if the Telluride had an option that would keep me from backing into a tree or a wall or another parked car.

It does come with a 10.2 or 12.X screen with a backup camera. Not sure if the '23 SX comes with surround cameras to give you a 360 degree view but it is a little hard to back into something if you are using the camera. If you do, maybe you shouldn't be driving (not dinging you specifically, just stating that as a general statement).

I guess you might say the same thing about the lane assist or the blind-spot warnings or other safety/assist features. I think they're a good idea, given my understanding of human fallibility. I got run into (was front-ended at about ten mph) by a nice young woman who got distracted by a child in her car a few years back.

Distractions happen and I'll take all the help I can get!

The auto break head on collision feature I hate. I'll be pretty far away or the car in front of me is slowing down to turn while I am approaching and it starts going off, sometimes starting to break, which I'm waiting for the car behind me to rear end me.
Lane assist I use for long distance drives, not daily driving to and from work or around town.

Your original question was about the forward system. I have a 2022 EX, so no forward sensors, but the rear system will warn me, and brake if necessary, when I am parking and approaching a parked car or stationary object.

Interesting. I never get any auto-braking unless I' in cruise control and a car slows suddenly. I only use cruise on fwys.

That's interesting. I've never had my 2023 SX apply braking when in reverse.

Is there any chance you are disabling the sensors by pushing the button by the shifter?

That's not the case. I do sometimes use that button to disable audible alerts when backing up with a bike rack mounted, but not generally. Good ask, tho.
