Got stuck in mud

I'm sure you all know, but these have open diffs front and back. Among the many implications is that snow tires, when stuck, have twice the advantage you'd have thought (an open diff will apply power to both wheels so long as you don't spin).

So yea, snow tires for the win.

Took my Telluride on the soft beaches of Long Island. It went pretty well in spite of ground clearance issues. The ruts on the beach can get deep and most vehicles will scrape bottom. Aired-down to 15psi and kept up momentum. I wasn't with any friends so I didn't push my luck with any tricky maneuvers. When backing into the spot it felt like traction control was still on even though I turned it off. I'll give updates as I get more beach time in.
Hey man!
This was the answer I was looking for! I thought I got my hopes up when I was researching the telluride on beaches and I also live on Long Island. Since this post have you taken it on the beach more then just once? Have you ever got stuck? If so was it a big to do? Please give me all the details! I ordered the 2021 nightfall which basically comes with the same wheels as yours! Any and all advice welcome! Also did you have any issues getting the off road pass from the town?

So kinda a long story, but here we go; we got the 2020 Telluride in March and it was our only AWD vehicle so that's what we took on the beach. There's not much opportunity to screw around on the beach so you have to do something stupid to get stuck. Put in Sport mode, lock the center diff' and off you go.

In May my wife had an accident and totaled the Telluride. I needed a vehicle quick so I went out and bought a 2014 Toyota Tacoma. That became the beach vehicle from then on. We ordered another Telluride which came in a little over a month ago. I love the Tacoma so I'm going to keep that and sell our other car (2014 Mazda 3) so we'll have the Telluride and the Tacoma....

To answer your questions about beach driving; the Telluride did great, you'll have no issues. I've driven everything on the beach: Audi allroad, Honda Element, Jeep Wagoneer, as long as you air down, you'll be fine. I've seen guys in F350's get stuck to their axles because they didn't air down, meanwhile Subaru Outback's fly by because they're running 15 psi. I'll probably never take the new Telluride on the beach because we have the Tacoma, but it's extremely capable. I'd spend 2 hours washing the chassis and vacuuming the Telluride after a day in the sand which was annoying. I'm less fastidious with the Taco'. We get the NYS surf casting permit for beach access. There's also a surfing permit. Get it online soon because you can only apply for them between January 1 and March 30. You'll need some stuff like tow rope, boards, shovel, fishing rods, etc. to get on the beach. We drive on Gilgo and Sore Thumb but there are other beaches you can access with the pass. Get a good compressor or you'll be there forever airing up at the exit. I bought a Viair off-road compressor that hooks up to the battery and makes quick work of inflating four tires. ARB makes some nice ones too but they're pretty expensive.
Let me know if you have any questions. Where on LI are you located? Which dealer did you choose? Good luck, you're going to love the Telluride!

Hey!!
Great advice! We live in ronkonkoma And we always go to shinnecock inlet. I never knew we actually needed rods to drive on. We’re possibly getting the kia in January from Kia generation in Bohemia but we are waiting on the 1/15 delivery to find our more details.I also have a concierge that’s searching for the telluride we want as well. I just love everything about it. Do you think the drive thru carwashs will be a good means to remove the sand from the under carriage? 2 hours removing sand doesn’t sound like fun after a day of beaching it up lol. Do you usually have to clean sand out of all AWD and 4x4 after a day of sand?

Yeah, a car wash would definitely help. When the car scrapes the bottom on sand it gets on everything so I would do my best to get it off. And vacuuming everything out is a PIA too.

But just to make sure they didn’t give U an issue when getting the surf pass? I was nervous cause it’s not technically a 4x4... how did you bring the rods? I’m not doing any fishing I just go to swim and relax and meet friends with there trucks

No issues. This year I had to do it online so they don't even see your vehicle. I've gotten passes for an Audi station wagon and a Honda Element so they won't care about an SUV. My surf cast rods are the kind that break in half so they fit inside. Nobody really does a whole lot of fishing. You could apply for the surfing permit and throw a board on the roof!

Lol I’m staying away from the roof rack for now cause I don’t wanna be a camping addict! Lol Ok so which permit do I go for?

Here's the link to the website for the fishing passes.

I've done the beaches in Florida and back roads in Canada. As long as you don't get stupid, the beast gets thru everything.
I’ve used it in both smart mode and snow mode at low and high speeds. Worked great and nothing out of the ordinary.
However, while on a particularly soft-mud, slippery back road, I locked the 4 wheel drive, put it in snow mode and tried creeping along. The vehicle jittered rather uncontrollably. I’m thinking that the wheels were slipping in the mud and the engine and tranny were trying to adjust, but it was HORRIBLE. When I unlocked the 4 wheel drive and went back to my standby Smart Mode, all was fine and I easily got out of the mud with no additional problems.

Huh, that's crazy. We just got our replacement 2021 and other than some snow, haven't done much out of the ordinary with it. It was pretty great in the recent 5" of slippery/icy snow we got (though the wiper trough got packed with snow). When I had the 2020 on the beach, it too was new (less than 1000 miles) so we didn't screw around much. I'd love to figure out optimal settings for off road. Sure would hate to have to do a Google search from the beach as I'm high-centered to figure out the awd and traction control systems. I've seen what off road recovery looks like and I want no part of it.
The juddering you experienced was probably two systems working against each other. Sometimes you want to switch all of that nonsense off and let her rip! My Tacoma has a few settings for the locking diff and traction control that I've yet to figure out too. Too many nannies on modern vehicles!

Last Florida trip we were beaching and some idiot in an old Corolla tried to drive out. Don't think he made it 50 yards before completely burying the wheels. I usually stop and help people, but this fellow obviously couldn't read (the warning signs were about 10' tall), so I let him keep digging with his hands... He may still be there for all I know, and that was in 2019. <:)

Crazy how different the sand can be. The sand here on the south shore of Long Island is sugary and you'd sink in a second like the dude you mentioned. On the north shore it's little round stones that hurt to walk on and also require 4wd and airing down. Then you go to Daytona and you can drive a sports car on the sand. 🤷‍♂️

Hey man!! So my telluride sx is here! I’m actually picking it up Saturday. And then I want to apply for the pass to get it on the beach. Are you able to send me the link you used to apply online? I know you said it was a surf or surf cast permit? And I know they ask for the vin and vehicle registration.. Yoir sure they will approve the pass for the telluride as an AWD and not a 4WD? Keep me posted when you have a chance! And thanks again!

Here's the link to the application. I'd say 50% of the vehicles on the beach are AWD SUV's just like the Telluride.

Good luck!

Nice photos and looks like a blast. I did see your other post, sorry your Telluride was in an accident but hopefully you all were well. I find it interesting with this airing-down on beach sand. For true doom buggy style, airing-down makes sense. However, taking a light drive along the beach with the family seems a little excessive. Every July my wife and I take our kiddos to the Oregon Coast and in our 2016 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5i with Eyesight and hit the beach access points to drive north and south a bit. Never have I aired-down to drive along the beach. My vehicle tire specs call for 35psi front and 33psi back. I have driven in the sand and performed some donuts and not once have I ever gotten stuck. Last year I got up to about 35mph on the straight shots but for a brief length. Now, I am like you where our Outback is the primary family vehicle and only AWD. So I do not push it too hard or take it near the tide. We are selling our older car to transition our primary family vehicle from the Outback to a 2021 or 2022 Telluride SX AWD with Prestige/Nightfall which should be arriving this spring. We placed our order in October 2020, our dealer estimates that we may fall into the 2022 model as of yesterday. Hopefully we will get it before July so I can take it for a spin on the west coast and see how it does compared to our Outback. We really like Subaru and the new Accent was a great contender to the Telluride; however, the determining factor was that the Telluride provides a more robust, rugged, and stunning appearance. The Accent doesn’t offer a rugged look unless you’re willing to do some aftermarket upgrades. I am really interested to see how the Kia AWD will do compared to our experience with Subaru.
