How To: Full Tow Hitch Install

Nice! Just ordered one on etrailer that didn’t require cutting into the bumper cover. Also waiting for a 7 pin plug n play aftermarket adaptor to come up. The Kia one is pricey.

Hey gang! I’ve search the forum for a link to a bumper cover replacement for the factory hitch. I’m looking for a black one for a 21 Telluride Nightfall edition. Any help sure would be appreciated!

How much torque should be put on the OEM trailer hitch mounting bolts?

Howdy folks. This my first post! I have been on other forums for various cars. It seems like most my searches take me here for information, so why not join! I have personally installed 4 hitches on cars so I have a little experience. After doing some research, I ordered the KIA OE hitch and bumper cover, mainly because I liked that it sat higher and looked more integrated with the addition of the cover. It also supplies a nice place to mount the harness. I am planning on using a Curt harness and 7pin and 4pin combination mount to go on the factory bracket. This mainly because is just looks better IMHO and it gives you the option of connecting to whatever trailer connection you have without using an adapter. I do realize the charging and brake options will not be connected with the 7 pin but I will not be trailing anything significant. The parts are coming in and I shopped around as much as I could. It looks like I will be all in for a little over $400. As far as the installation, it looks super easy and KIA has made if very simple. I can post more photos and prices if interested.

We just got our new 21 Telly and we need a tow hitch for our heavy platform ebike rack. Have you guys ever heard of a Stealth tow hitch? This is the one I am considering, I don't want to get into cutting that back panel, and the dealership quoted me $1150 which is way out of budget. The ones I saw on this forum using this hitch look amazing.

STEALTH TOW HITCH

I am also interested in knowing if a 7 pin wiring system is the best way to go in the long run, just in case we ever need to tow something with brake capacity? What are your thoughts on the differences and did the 2021 Telluride have a 7 pin wiring on the tow package? Self installation is not an option for us. Thanks in advance

I don't have any experience with the stealth other than it usually is a fair amount more than traditional hitches. In my opinion, they are great for cars that don't usually have hitches but for Telly's I think a hitch looks right in place. Etrailer provides the Curt and Draw Tite. I think the are both around $200 but the Draw Tite sits just a bit lower so it clears the bumper and no cutting needed. Sitting lower is what brought me to purchase the OE Kia hitch with the OE cover plate since these actually sit in the bumper hence the need for a cover plate, The Telluride 2021 comes with a 7 pin so you would only need to buy the correct harness that should clip into the existing connections.

The stock OEM hitch looks great. It comes with a new panel no cutting needed.

If you can buy the stealth hitch without the wiring go for that option. The stealth hitch looks awesome but the 7-pin wiring it comes with is universal last I checked and since you have a 2021 it’s prewired for a plug n play 7-pin harness. But right now Kia is the only one with the harness which you can get or wait. If you just want to add extra lights to your bike rack or plan to tow something without a brake you can buy a $40-66 aftermarket 4-pin harness that works for both a 2020 or 2021. It’s a better option that the Kia 4-pin that is rated for less amperage and costs about $180.

If you think you need the 7-pin now the harness is something you can order from the parts dept. I would think UHaul or a camper dealer would be able to quote the install if you told them upfront that you plan to supply the parts. I get the hitch can be intimidating to DIY, but the harness is VERY easy if you get t he plug and play. You basically need a flat screwdriver and willing to slide under the rear of the car.

If you don’t want to spend the money on the stealth and don’t want to cut anything on the Curt hitch, the new Drawtite part number may hang low enough to require cutting or the Kia tow hitch can also be ordered online along with the bumper cover insert.

Here’s a link with more info:

After market hitch

At one point UHaul advertised one of the Drawtite hitches and does installation.

Thank you so much, the local truck/trailer place here uses DrawTite and that is another option, and less $$, I don't think it requires cutting but I really love that Stealth look, we can store that part with our Thule bike rack and be very efficient, trouble is.....its about a 3 hour drive to get the installation but I believe its gonna be worth it to us as we plan to have this vehicle for ~ 10 yrs.

FYI the Kia hitch can be found on Ebay from a Kia dealer for the low $300's with free shipping. I don't know what the dealers are asking but I imagine its quite more. Good luck!

$335 for the hitch and the bumper plate/cover is the lowest I’ve seen. But the Draw-tite #76420 is under $130 and does not require the $50 bumper plate.

NCTelly, where can you find the Draw-tite #76420 for under $130? Best I could find was around $200.

I have only seen pictures of the Draw-Tite (aka Reese) #76420 on a Palisade and it appears to hang low enough with no cutting required. There was another part # originally for the Telluride that was replaced by this one. I’m assuming that they dropped the receiver portion about an inch or two to avoid having to cut. But no one has posted a picture of the Telluride with it so that hasn’t been confirmed.

Nice find on the Draw Tite hitch! I searched more than a few times and never came up with them carrying them or that price. One of the reasons forums like these are so great. I have installed hitches both aftermarket and OE on Acura and 2 Audi's and if you went just with the OE parts for these, you were looking at close to $1000 not including labor. Plus these were much more involved with removing the rear bumper covers, sensor disconnection etc all along being as careful as you could break clips. After watching a few videos, the KIA placement looks like a 2-3 out of ten difficulty. My point? To be all in with OE hitch and bumper cover (going with aftermarket harness) for $400 isn't bad at all for that option. I have ordered a bunch of accessories since picking up my Telly (Mud flaps, Roof rack bars, hitch, bumper cover, rear cargo carpet and I am just a bit surprised how expensive the parts are compared to other makes like BMW and Audi. Finding great deals on KIA parts is a challenge for sure.

My hitch arrived today from Cherry Hill Kia Ebay ($347 including tax, free shipping) I got the cover part ($65) and the Harness (Curt $34 Amazon) So I am all in at $450. This is the 4th hitch I've done and by far the easiest. I will just hit some points.

  • The Kia Hitch is first class in every way. Fit, finish. It even came with the ball mount and pin. Excellent instructions and hardware. Made in the US!
  • The Free shipping is key. Don't be fooled on prices from other Kia sites selling the OE hitch. The shipping quotes I was getting were in the $100+range!
  • The hitch and the cover and why I went with this set up. It looks exactly as it would of come from the dealer.
  • The Curt harness from Amazon was a great price. Simple plug and play. The connection fits into the Kia plate perfectly. I have no idea why Kia would be charging over $150 for the same item.
  • No need to a lift or jacking of the car. I used a few homemade ramps I have to get it up maybe 4 inches
  • Since I actually enjoy doing stuff like this I took my time but I could do this in less than an hour next time.
I plan on using it for bike racks, small U haul trailers, perhaps some items like log splitters or like. Always good to have a hitch again!
