• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... I have had several instances where a hidden key accessible from outside the vehicle has saved major problems (when I've lost my key, etc.)
The smart fob makes this challenging. I think it can be done by:
1. Removing the key from the smart fob and hiding it somewhere on the outside of the vehicle (using tape or a magnetic holder, etc.)
2. Removing the battery from the keyless smart fob.
3. Putting the keyless smart fob and its battery inside the vehicle (like in the glove compartment).
Thus one could access the key, open the door, get the smart fob and battery out of the glove box and inserting the battery and closing the smart fob.

Any reason this won't work?
Is there a better way?

If you have a tow hitch I know there was a device to store a key in the hitch with a combination lock.

What good would it be to put the key fob and the battery in the glove compartment if the vehicle is locked and you don't have a way to get in? I have a magnetic box and a spare key on every one of my vehicles. For the vehicles that have smart fobs, I take the battery out as you mentioned and store it with the key in the magnetic box so that I can insert the battery when I need to use it. I've seen magnetic boxes for as little as $3 and I recently bought a larger heavier duty one with a strong latch and really strong magnets for $20. I don't think I ever have to worry about that one falling off, actually I haven't had any fall off yet. Even the cheap $3 one has held on for 6 years.
