• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... (Forgive me if this is the wrong group. Seemed logical at the time.)

Question about ISG and engine wear. Obviously some engineering has gone into the ISG systems. Part of me says the constant stop/start of the engine can't be the best thing for the engine.

Am I overthinking things here?

There are some owners in this forum who are in the same boat as you with that mindset in regards to Idle stop and go, and premature starter failure.

Fact of the matter is, this car has been released with ISG for almost 4 years and there have been zero reports of starters failing. Nor have there been any reports of any cars from any makes with widespread failure of starters when using ISG. ISG is here to stay until the auto industry goes fully EV.

Thank you. Sounds like I'm over thinking it!

Must say that the idle stop system on my 23 is quite seamless. The 2016 Pilot we came out of was not nearly as good. Found myself turning it off all the time. Hardly noticeable on the Telluride.

I agree. I’ve only experienced this kind of system on a rental Volkswagen and it was terrible. But I was pleasantly surprised that it was fairly smooth on my new ‘23. That being said, I did turn it off this morning while in the school drop off line. It felt too “surgy” when I was ready to move forward, made me nervous with kids running around.

I have the one of the first of 2020 Telluride, and ISG worked for first year and it stopped working since then.
need to have it looked into I guess again; on multiple time I have left it at dealers and different dealers, and they cannot figure out the solution.

I would consider myself lucky that it stopped working... lol. I really can't stand it. I'm still waiting on my Telluride but with my Jeep Grand Cherokee just hated it. My biggest issue is when I'm trying to make a turn onto a road and need to kick it to fit in - I don't want to wait for the engine to start or even shut off just as I'm doing that. I already purchased this.... 2020-2023 Kia Telluride Autostop Eliminator and will install it as soon as my Telly arrives. I used a similar product for my Jeep and loved it!!!

I think it's debatable whether this system will cause premature wear or not but I think it's pretty cetain that there are no advantages, well at least in my mind.

I personally also hate it. Engine component wear happens when there is lack of oil. every time the car turns off oil stops circulating, Every time it starts back up there is a split second before it starts circulating again. Granted everything is still coated in oil since its such short intervals but I rather not take that risk.

The advantages are on a macro scale, manufacturers can claim gas savings and reduced emissions. For the individual vehicle, it’s microscopic.

The only place isg makes sense is in a hybrid because they can start moving under electric power while the engine starts back up. I will say the 2023 telluride handles it smoother than our 2020 did but I still don't like the delay and then lurch when I go to take off from a stop.
Nice thing about the telluride (our first 2020 and this also works on our new 23 thankfully) is a 1x1 inch piece of plastic about 1.5mm thick (most plastic credit cards are about right) stuffed in beside the on/off button for isg keeps the button depressed so isg is always disabled when the car starts.
We did this in our 2020 for all 3 years we had it and it never caused any problem and the 2023 works the same.

As for it causing premature failure of the starter, it absolutely will. The starter is a mechanical device and the more a mechanical device is used the faster it will wear out, period. They necessarily have to use a much higher quality starter assembly in vehicles with isg so it doesn't fail before the warranty is out in most cases, but it will fail faster if isg is used frequently.20230112_201311.webp

Wow - what an awesome idea on the plastic piece!!!! I could have saved $100!!!!
