Kia Motors unveiled its next big SUV for the North American market at the recently concluded New York Fashion Week -- the 2020 Telluride. Unlike conventional launches at motor shows, Kia chose a fashion week to debut its latest concept.
The 2020 Telluride is a seven seater full size SUV designed to take on the likes of the BMW X5 and Jeep Grand Cherokee. Extending 197 inches long, spreading 79 inches wide and standing 71 inches tall, the Telluride has a boxy and square design. Despite being built on a unibody platform, the car looks like a body on frame truck based SUV. The grille is imposing while the vertical headlamps offer a masculine image.
There may be a bespoke version of the Telluride that comes with several add ons like customized bumpers, side plates, roof rack, snorkel, ladder, and 265/50R-20 burly tires making it ideal for off roading. There’s also a spare tire mounted at the back.
Inside, Kia offers natural wood trims on the dashboard and the doors which makes the interior aesthetically pleasing. Premium leather is placed scarcely yet strategically on the dashboard. The dashboard, door panels and steering wheel are 3D printed and there’s a Light Emitted Rejuvenation (LER) therapeutic system which responds to light from the ceiling-mounted LED panel. You can also get vital health information from the smart sensors in the front four seats. Some of these details seem to be inspired from Kia’s Stinger and K900 models - particularly the large infotainment system placed at the center. The exquisite leather combined with beautiful designed sunroof accentuates the luxury feeling inside the vehicle.
Under the hood, the Kia Telluride is likely to be powered by a new 3.5 liter V6 hybrid electric powertrain that churns out an exceptional 400 horsepower. It runs on an advanced all wheel drive architecture and offers about 30 mpg on the highway. In addition to the Hybrid V6 electric powertrain, there’s also an option of choosing a Kia’s 3.3 liter V6 making 365 horsepower.
The Kia Telluride SUV was first teased two years back. While there have been some changes in the current model, these are most likely the final updates before the vehicle rolls out of the their Georgia plant beginning next year. With a bold design, which was born in the company’s design studio in Irvine, California, and new in-car technology, you can bet on Kia’s largest SUV in the US to bring in conquest sales from established nameplates like the Explorer, X5, Land Cruiser and Grand Cherokee.
