• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Hi,
first post ever so please excuse any lapses.

1st oil change. 4800 miles. No oil (maybe .5-1 qt?) in tank after. Not interested in blame. Just fixing. Discovered after 100 miles

Symptoms:
ran a little rough at idle before shut off
minor engine noice…not knocking…while running.
turned itself off at 13 mph. Started right back up.
no warning lights, no smells, smoke, etc.
didn’t run hot.

Questions:
1. Is engine damaged? Even a little? We keep cars 200,000-300,000 miles…long past 100,000 warranty?

2. What to check? Bearings, yes. Pistons? Rings? More?

3. Involve factory rep?

4. Other ideas? Not looking for blame or trouble, stuff happens. But do want it fixed since we keep cars a long time.

thanks for sharing experience and knowledge.

JR

I take it you changed your oil and only a quart or less was added instead of the full amount? Since you mention no blame, I presume you did it yourself. In this case, it’s not a warranty issue that the vehicle burned oil but human error. You likely significantly damaged the engine. I would change the oil and filter again, look in the filter and see how much metal is in it. Add the full amount and hope it runs fine. Then trade the vehicle in on a new one. The poor guy that buys it will be inconvenienced as it will be covered by warranty but you will not as they’ll be able to diagnose the cause easily. This is probably your best case scenario as I doubt it will run even temporarily as normal. Good luck and please keep us posted.

You changed oil and only 0.5-1 quart of oil came out? No check engine light? I'd refill to capacity and test drive. If it's been damaged already, then the damage is done! If not, count your blessing! Thanks!
