noise under hood

I just got a new telluride on the third of april. When I started it the next morning there was a strange noise from under the hood. I opened the hood and listened for a minute,
and sure enough the noise was like an intermittent grinding/ fan hitting something sound. I drove a block and it was gone. The next day it was back, so I took it to the dealer
and of course it was gone when I got there. The noise speeds up with the engine. If I can't produce the noise at the dealer, there is nothing they can do. Does anyone have any
idea what this could be? It does not seem to be related to a cold engine, because it has done it with a warm engine.

They're telling me it's the GDI pump. Does this sound possible? I owned a sorento before this and never heard this noise.
And would it speed up when reving the engine?

That could easily be it. They’ll replace it under warranty and you’ll be on your way. These things happen.

They have not heard what I hear. It's intermittent and has not made the noise when I'm at the dealer. So it's speculation
on their part to say it's the GDI pump. I was an electrical tech and know how it is when somebody complains about
a problem that you can't duplicate. You can't fix what ain't broke. So far there is no performance problem with the
vehicle. But if it is normal, then other telluride owners should hear it too. First thing in the morning open your hood
and start the vehicle, and listen for this noise like a fan intermittently hitting something. this goes away after driving
a short distance.

Perhaps you could shoot some video in the morning and share with your dealer as well as the group

or leave it at your dealer overnite and arrange a start up the next morning with you attending .............point being I had a very bad sunroof noise problem ( Stinger GT ) that the dealer continually said they could not hear or reproduce , I made the Service Manager drive with me to prove it , we didnt even get out of the dealership before it was creaking ................they replaced it asap !

I did record the noise, and they finally heard it too. So now they have had the vehicle for two days and are still working with KIA
to solve the problem. At least they gave me a rental car for no cost. At first they were telling me $36.00 a day for the car. I
told them no way that's an insult to try to charge me for warranty work on a vehicle with 300 miles on it. I'm afraid this may be
a major problem, and I don't like the idea of tearing apart a new vehicle. I think I will be trading (if they fix it) before any thing else
happens. I guess it's not a good idea to buy a new vehicle before all the bugs are worked out.

It could very well be something simple. Don’t jump to conclusions so quickly! If you trade it so soon after buying it you’ll be out a ton of money.

I would think they’d give you a loner vehicle and not a rental.

until they get one. They can't give me a timeline on that. I'm getting fed up with the whole thing. I think that
is a pretty big job too. Are there any mechanics out there? I have had only 100 miles of use out of this vehicle,
and 300 miles back and forth to the dealer. I called the KIA consumer assistance center and told them I want
a buyback. They have sent my case higher up, so now I wait for a call from them. I will take the hit on the money
to get rid of it. I'll buy a vehicle that has been around a while.

I canceled. I'll probably get it back with grease on the steering wheel and
Seats. And I will never trust it for a long trip. I know I sound negative, but
things are never put back together like they were. You know, a forgotten
screw, a leaky gasket , etc. I'll have to chalk this up as another mistake
I've made, and probably not the last.

I have the first Stinger delivered in North America ..............It had a few issues , one was major , the sun roof frame was not installed properly and caused the car to creak and the doors squeek ..................long story ..................Kia fixed it ................they took out my roof liner , door pillar covers etc etc etc . Then put it back together with a new sunroof frame then replaced the glass ........................the car is PERFECT now . Your fix will not be as intrusive , all will be good , dont worry . They will get it fixed properly and you'll be fine ..............there usually are costs for early adopters . Good luck !!

I had the head unit replaced on my Stinger, so they had to dismantle the whole dash pretty much to replace it. Back to working great and no rattles... 1st gens of any car are going to have things here and there, but they usually get them taken care of. There were a few things on the 2016 Sorento also, but figured going in that it will have some recalls here and there. But I've never had any that would cause me to not trust any of the vehicles. Out of the tens of thousands of pumps made and used, you just happened to get a noisy one. I personally wouldn't worry about it as Kia for me and my family have backed there products up.

My son has a Forte, engine blew in Georgia on his way back from Florida. Georgia dealer gave him a loaner so he could get home to Ohio. They replaced his engine (under warranty) and shipped it to our dealer. He picked up his car and dropped off loaner at dealer and they shipped his loaner back to Georgia... couldn't be happier with our Kias and dealers we have dealt with. I think a lot depends on the dealer also, there are good and bad ones in all makes, just find a good one and stick with them.

Thanks for the encouraging info guys. I hope you are right. I still don't understand why they can't tell me
when the part will arrive. They should be able to overnight it from anywhere in the country. Unless it is
coming from Korea. Is the telluride engine used in any other KIA vehicles? One other thing I thought of
though. Did the bad pump leave metal shavings in the engine?

If it's just making a noise and hasn't failed, I doubt it would have put off any shavings, if so, between the magnet in the pan and the filter, it would be fine since it's the oil pump. Higher up in the engine could have been a cause for concern.

Where is the pump located? Is it inside the oil pan? I don't mean inside the pan, but do you gain access to it
by taking off the oil pan? Is it electric, or does it run off a cam of some sort? When I reved the engine the noise
sped up also.

Usually they are accessed by taking off the oil pan and they run off a lobe on the crank or on a gear set that runs off the crank. But yes, the noise should have changed with the engine RPM's
