oil leak 2022 SX with 1,700 miles...noticed after the wife left for work...seems to be leaking behind the front passenger side wheel hence the mark a little farther back in the garage...does not look like engine oil...much darker

jacked it up and i was not able to find anything due to the rain storm (nor'easter) washing everything off when she drove home...i looked on top of the plastic belly pan, nothing in the area of the oil pan/oil filter/plug...it seems like it leaked from somewhere behind the front passenger wheel cause i measured out the circumference of the wheel with a string and it matches up to the tire rolling through it and creating the second oil mark farther back...i am wondering if something leaked behind the back portion of the wheel well plastic and ran down that and into the splash guard but i really am not sure...i even saved the dirty rag i used to wipe it up in a ziplock back like monica lewinsky like it will get tested to prove that it came from that car if it explodes or something lol...anyone have any ideas?...i may have to put all this in it's own thread...at the moment i'm going to keep an eye on it...engine oil level seemed ok...the oil on the garage floor is much darker than the engine oil as well

called the dealer...no loaners...there would be a charge for a tow...may be able to tow it if my wife still has AAA...saying it may be axle grease mixed with water...would not be able to look at it till next week

there is a closer dealer to us but we did not buy it from that dealer

can i use roadside assistance from my home?...page 8-11

My battery died on me a month after purchase. If I called dealer they would charge me for tow... called roadside assistance, said I didn't know what was wrong with it and they towed it free to that same dealer.

have my wife checking under her car before she leaves work and i have been checking under it while in the garage...no more leaks thus far...not sure if i want to bring it to the dealer and have them start to tear it apart looking for a leak that all evidence was washed away by the storm...i plan to take a really good look when i do the first oil change...it's got a little over 1,700 miles now and the oil change intervals are 8k miles by the maintenance schedule...i'll probably do the first oil change before 8k miles

That's got to be very worrisome seeing that much oil on the garage floor with just 1,700 miles! Well, even at 170,000 miles! I doubt the water from rains would have washed away all the evidence. Hopefully, there will be some trace of the source that you'll be able to find. Axle grease is typically waterproof grease so unless KIA used a non-waterproof grease (extremely unlikely) I doubt it would have "mixed" with water to run like that. Mystery for sure. Let us know what you learn. Good luck!

it was a nor'easter...no evidence left...i looked everywhere in the vicinity without dismantling anything...i may take apart the wheel well when i do the first oil change...i feel like it could have ran down the back of the wheel well and dripped...i was wondering what the chances are that some oil was left somewhere during the build process and came out somehow but from 9/1/21 when we picked it up until 10/26/21 there was no leak on my garage floor and there has not been another since

What a mystery this is. That oil is very dark and like you demonstrated is much darker than your motor oil. Not sure where it could have come from. Hopefully you'll find some traces of it so you can diagnose its source. Let us know what you find. Good luck!

Looking at your second set of pics, specifically leak2.jpg.
Firstly, is this the same stuff as is on your garage floor? If yes, it's almost certainly coming from one of the accessory units driven by the serpentine belt. If you have an inspection mirror [think selfie stick with a mirror on the end] you may be able to see the source of the leak by searching around the front of the engine pulley positions.
Its probably not axle related. The only things that far outboard are the CV joints. If the CV boot was damaged [which happens] you might see CV grease, but that is much thicker and heavier, and is unlikely to drop in closely spaced drips shown in your pics.

Based on your pics, its probably safe to drive it to the local dealership. My purchase dealership is over an hour out & back. FWIW, I'm taking my Telly to a local dealership for service, and they are more than happy to do the work.

what you are seeing in that leak2.jpg is water on top of the plastic "skid plate" under the car, so no that is not it...the leak came from somewhere at or behind the front passenger tire cause she drove through it or was parked in it backing out of the garage cause there is another tire mark of oil which is exactly the circumference distance away from the first puddle of oil (oil1.jpg)...because i didn't witness the leak on the floor before she pulled out of the garage i'm not sure if the wheel was parked in the oil (i.e. the oil dripped on the wheel and down the wheel onto the tire and onto the floor under the tire)...or it was dripping from somewhere behind the wheel and onto the floor...to me it seems like the latter cause if it was dripping on the wheel there wouldn't be droplets like that as she backed out...based on the oil pattern i'm guessing it was dripping on the back side of the plastic wheel well (leak4.jpg) and into the wheel mud guard and dripping out of the hole in bottom of the wheel mud guard (leak3.jpg)...this would make sense when she backed out of the garage and it dripped as she backed out...so i think i'm going to pull the mud guard and wheel well apart and take a look when i do an oil change...i have no idea what is in this vicinity that could be leaking though

Hmm, based on the dipstick level, you're about 2 quarts short. I just changed my oil for the 2nd time today at 5,200 miles and it's 1.5 quarts short (just a tad lower than the upper marker of dipstick). I also think (I may be wrong here) that the plastic housing of the oil filter is a suspect! This is the 2nd time that I noticed this--oil seepage! Today, after changing my oil, I wiped the oil filter housing focused on the lip (where the seepage occurred) where you let the oil drain before completely opening the plastic filter housing. I started the engine and waited for 10-15 min then checked the oil filter housing and there was oil seepage--not drips. I wiped it off again thoroughly and drove it around the neighborhood for 15 min at 20-40 miles/hour then I checked it again! Seepage! This is not new, btw since I already noticed it the first time I changed the oil at 1.700 miles and only got around 6 quarts of oil. I asked the question here and was told that some of the oil possibly remained in the engine, which I accepted since it made sense. But now this! So, I retightened the filter housing a tiny bit more (being very careful not to crack it). Then I drove around the neighborhood and rechecked--no more seepage. I took the Telly to the highway and drove it 40-60 miles/hour for 30 min. Rechecked--no more seepage! IMHO, this plastic housing doesn't seal as well as the regular filter because people are finding it tricky to close it tightly enough (for fear of cracking the plastic housing). That includes the mechanics/techs, btw! Oh, the oil will be very dark at 1,700 miles--thanks to all the gunk the oil gets--a proof of how hard the oil works as a detergent! Thanks.

2022 Hyundai palisade calligraphy. 1700 miles. Noticed the smell of burnt oil. Thought it was residual burn off of a new engine. Just hit 1900 miles and noticed a definite leak. Checked the dip and I was 1 qt low.

the dip stick photo isn't very good...i think it had enough oil at the time when i looked at it...i just did my first oil change at 4600 miles just to get any metal flakes out...photos/info below...used a torque wrench and it seems fine now as far as leaking...plastic can expand/contract so i'm not a fan of the filter housing design vs a conventional oil filter...

if your engine is consuming oil you may want to get that looked at while under warranty...i'm currently dealing with this with my '13 subaru legacy to an absurd amount

8,000- had oil change- technician said- I see oil leaking- before the change- Oil then leak on driveway- brought to Kia- they said technician broke the gasket-
Hopefully that’s truthful- but following on oil leaks!

So just to make this clea— there was oil leak before the oil change? Then another oil leak after?

The gasket on the oil drain plug is a metallic crush washer (brass/copper/aluminum). The oil filter gasket is an O-ring, Either of those "gaskets" would be difficult to break doing an oil change.

Sounds like a cracked oil filter housing, which is not uncommon for this vehicle.
