Registering in CA

….Only when title/purchase paper work is not received by DMV, they will give temp registration to allow time for paper work to arrive to complete the registration.
That’ show I understand it. So no need to worry about the Nontitle ”Goldenrod” thing? Sounds complicated.
By the way, I25 will collect CA tax, at least for cash deal.

thx

Ok so standard smog check fee, makes sense. If CO collects and forwards CA sales tax rate, do you still need to pay the $600 or anything at DMV? Just want to be sure.
CO only collect sales tax, there’s still about $600 in CA vehicle registration fees. Remember the value of the Telluride is the price negotiated with the dealer, not the money paid to pickup vehicle, which includes sales tax.

I was able to complete process in one session, so I didn’t need extension or temporary paperwork. DMV will let you know what to do if title paperwork is not available. I assume they probably let CO temporary registration continue, issue you CA temporary registration, some kind of extension, or Nontitle registration. That you can let us know.

Out of curiosity, did you have the out of state dealer send it to any CA DMV or the specific office that you visited? Basically the question is, is it important which CA DMV location the out of state dealer sends the paperwork or does the DMV communicate with one another when documents are received at another location?

Have dealer send paperwork to DMV office where you plan to go to. Otherwise, I don’t know what DMV procedure is to reroute the paperwork. If you do change DMV office, you probably need to have that office to contact the other office. Just takes more time. Dealer should give you a tracking number for paperwork when they send it. Just need to call every so often to check on status.

P.S. Bring your checkbook to DMV to pay any fees. They charge you for using credit or debit card.

We had the paperwork sent directly to us. It was easier and the delay at the DMV would have been too great. The dealer also returned the taxes they collect ed from us so we could pay our local DMV directly.

I think I like it this way since it’s gonna be an easy cash deal. We haven’t picked up the car yet but on the out the door price doc they sent us, the CA sale tax was included, and we did buy a cashier check. So did the dealer refund you the tax right there or send it later?

thx

edit: questions, why didn’t you just pay without the tax from the beginning? Also, can they charge you the CA sale tax and still send the doc directly to you? I don’t mind that and just pay the rest at local DMV since we already got the cashier check for the taxed amount.

The original intent was to have the paperwork sent to CA DMV. The dealer did not get it handled immediately so they decided it was easier to do overnight to me. Additionally, the finance guy stopped working there a day after we bought the car. Likely why nothing moved with DMV docs. Anyways, all monies not related to CO was sent back to us paid to the order of CA DMV.

The dealer can collect the CA tax but they need to take the initiative to promptly send the docs to the DMV.

Sorry I‘m a little confused. This is my first out of state purchase, and I hate dealing with CA DMV. Trying to get a clear picture before heading to CO.

You paid the dealer for the price that included CA tax and whatever that not CO related. They later refunded you but paid to the order of CA DMV. Why paid to order of CA DMV? could you cash that check? Why not paid to you?

thx for your info.

Sorry for the confusion. Basically, we were charged CA sales tax but they were so slow to mail docs they ended up returning the taxes to us in the form of a check made out to the DMV. They also sent DMV forms prefilled to us.

What dealer are you buying from?

Why was the refund check made out to the DMV? Since you’d already paid the CA tax, Why the refund check not paid to you?

We are buying from I25Kia. Car came 16 days ahead of schedule.

thx

Hi again. The check was made out to the DMV because the dealership was supposed to pay it on our behalf. So instead of mailing everything to our local DMV, to save time they said they would send it to me. Keep in mind, the car was in CA at this point, so the clock was ticking.

Honestly, it came down time and I didn't have much of it. The car was in CA and I had to get it registered within the time frame.

Let me know if you need more clarification or details. I'm happy to provide.

Chris

Good morning,

thinking of going this route and placing an order with i25 as all local SF Bay Area dealers have crazy markups and won’t allow orders to be placed. Who did you work with at i25 during this process? Would like to place an order as child #3 is due end of January 2022.

Thanks!

Their website have the number you can text to the “team”. Johnny started the process with the deposit and order form and eventually Dumitru took over with eta and vin updates. Once the car arrive, he’ll let you know and ask for your payment choice then send you all the docs to sign With out the door price (my case, msrp+CA tax+$695 dealer fee). Probably will cut the processing time in half for pick up. He’ll send Lyft coupon if you fly in. He‘s very responsive. We probably would have got the car a lot sooner if it wasn’t for the 21-22 transition at factory.

Just got back from the CA DMV after my purchase from i25 KIA this past weekend. Thanks to @Zulyish for his write up, I modified his write up based on my experience. I was in and out of the DMV, with no appointment in about an hour with CA tags and plates in hand. FYI I couldn't find any way to make an appointments online for this out of state vehicle registration transaction.

Here's my experience from a purchase not lease and financed not paid with cash via KIA Motors America.

Before heading to DMV, have
1. Registration form REG 343 filled up. Both pages.
2. Smog test done ($43 for me)
3. Have registration card from Colorado (since vehicle was sold there)
4. Also have the bill of sales or sales contract as they will need to verify that the tax was indeed paid for. They will need a physical sheet, your digital .PDF documents will NOT work here.

Went to DMV

5. Got sent to do vehicle verification
6. Completed verification, went back to office
7. Paid registration around $620, bring a check book (otherwise ~2% credit/debit card fee). Instead of receiving any temporary documents/permits, I actually walked out of the DMV with new CA Plates and tags in hand.

I was concerned since my sales guy at i25 KIA had told me it could take up to 60 days for the DMV to receive titling information because financing was longer than cash purchase on top of that they send it out in the order you purchased a vehicle there and apparently they're pretty backed up. My concern was that CA requires that you register within 20 days otherwise there's a big penalty.

I did inquire to the DMV rep that was helping me, if they needed me to come back or If they needed the titling information from either KIA Motors America or i25 KIA and they said nope, take the paper work to the front desk to get your plates and tags. Not sure why some other have to return back or have to receiving the titling information in order to get plates or tags. I didn't have to reach out further to i25 KIA nor KIA Motors America for any tracking numbers or paperwork either.

Again, I think your DMV visit or outcome may vary if you outright purchased your vehicle with cash, or maybe even leased instead of purchase. I financed our Telluride and through KIA Motors America.

So you had your Registration card from Co and bill of sale BUT not the TITLE with you and you got it done in one visit?

Great info. I just hope all DMVs operate the same.

yes, no appointment available for registraction. And I kept telling the sale reps about their temp 60 days tag doesn’t help. They don’t seem to get it.

thx

As long as CA DMV received the purchase paperwork (finance or not) from CO dealer by the time you visit DMV, you would not have to make second visit to complete registration. If dealer is able to send ASAP, great.

DMV website does not allow online appointment for auto registration, just go to local office and there should be signup table outside.

Don’t they at least give you the bill of sale (long pink sheet) when you leave their office? I am not sure what registration card is.

Yes, they'll give you a copy if you ask for it. They'll give you the CO temp registration when you leave the dealer. For Colorado it looks like a piece of paper with "Colorado Department of Revenue - Motor Vehicle" with a barcode on the top right I believe. On the second page it'll show $0 paid to state taxes and fees, etc.
