Registering in CA

Does this mean the answer is yes and I should fill the form with the exact tax amount as shown in my purchase agreement?
Yes, tax was paid and collected in CO. When DMV receives paperwork, i25 should forward the tax to DMV. DMV will know. Only a couple of posters had paperwork sent to them.

I'm done! Went straight to do smog check and visited DMV in one day. Pretty lucky in DMV, all the staff are friendly, wait time is moderate (with appt), not much question asked, staff know what they are doing. I guess dealership's paperwork arrived I got the license plate in one trip.

Just got registration finished for my new ride. Thanks to all those who contributed to this thread! Could’ve done it without you.

I bought financed from i25.

1. SMOG check
2. Drove into line for vehicle verification at DMV
3. Went inside with my number (told me to go to the appointment line even though I didn’t have one)
4. Told them dealer sent the paperwork
5. They pulled the paperwork (dealer sent check, contract and REG 343)
6. Gave the CO registration, SMOG and transport papers
7. Paid
8. Got plates!

EDIT

Forgot to mention that the DMV agent seemed clueless at first when I said the dealer mailed the docs to this office… check with your supervisor

Great to hear that you two had a relative easy time at DMV.

Did i25 mail you the CO registration? Just received my stack of papers from i25... and all I have is a Certificate of Origin (no title or registration). My understanding is that I take the Certificate of Origin to the DMV and get the CA title and registration there. There shouldn't already be a CO title and reg since the car was never owned by anyone in CO, but I see some CA people on this thread specifically saying they got both from their out-of-state dealer. So confused.

Waiting for dealer to get back to me as to whether they sent any paperwork separately to the DMV.

The CO registration is only a temporary registration (piece of paper) that’s on the car. You get CA registration after going to DMV.

Hey JRebel:

Fir point 6: what transport paperwork are you referring to and why would dmv care about transport?

OK - thanks for the clarification. I didn't even get this, and the DMV never asked for it. I was able to get registration, stickers, and license plates with:

- certificate of origin
- bill of sale / purchase agreement
- REG343 form
- inspection at DMV (they give you another form from this)
- smog check prior to visiting
- driver's license
- checkbook (cut a check so as not to be charged a service fee for using a credit card)

I didn't receive the title for my vehicle, though. Not sure under which scenario I'd need it, other than selling my car... though for a recent car sale I simply used a form to transfer the title, and never needed the original one.

Still confused as to how other posters are saying they received the title from the dealership before going to the DMV... from all the research I did the title for a new car purchased out of state wouldn't even exist yet until you take the paperwork to the DMV.

If car is financed, lender holds title. When paid, lender will send paperwork for you to file with DMV. If paid in cash, title may come from i25 or DMV. Check with i25.

Yep, I paid in cash. i25 doesn't have the title, they sent the certificate of origin instead. CA DMV has the title, but they didn't give me a copy. I don't need it anyhow (at least not in any scenario I can think of).

EDIT: just remembered DMV said they would mail me the title in 2-4 weeks… so they do issue it and give it to you. Will all the mental gymnastics of buying this car out-of-state, my memory just wasn’t cooperating.

So I just got my Telly from Colorado with the temp registration from CO. I live in California.

I went to a smog station, he said that a new car doesn't have the information needed to smog and would fail as there isn't enough data to make a passable smog. He plugged it in, let it run and showed me the red X instead of a green check on the area titled, 'FUEL' which he said he's seen before on other cars.

Should I check another smog station? Or just have him print out the information with the fuel portion of the smog as a fail (due to not enough data) and will this pass smog in California?

I had lots of miles on my car, but my smog guy did said it was possible there’s not enough miles on some car‘s computer. What do you have? Could call and check with another smog station.

^ 2022 Telly, just got it before Thanksgiving and everything was closed, but now I'm afraid I gotta take some trips to get the miles in! I have Colorado tags until Jan 18th.

Remember you have 20 days when car enters CA to register. I don’t think you need a lot of miles.

Transport company gave me a delivery report. Just details of pick delivery and condition. CA Tax is due from date of entry not date of purchase. Without the transport papers can’t show the a date of entry.

Please head @SLPV advice or you will have to pay a penalty!

^ No one has the answer about the smog stations unable to read the car due to not enough miles and therefore showing there isn't enough data. Are we expected to just drive 1,000 miles and go back and get it smogged within the 20 days? Kinda funky.

We had our car smogged with only 86 miles on the odometer. Perhaps check with another smog station? My husband is good friends with the owner of a garage, so we had them just plug it in and it took just a few minutes. We got a passing test result no problem.

Well that’s good news. Ill drive it around this week and take it back again.

Yes, go to a different SMOG station. I had only about 300 miles when I took mine to be tested. They also inspected every inch of the vehicle which never happens when I get my older vehicle checked for renewal.
