If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Sick to my stomach: Paint and windshield issues

🤖 AI Summary

No AI summary has been generated for this thread yet.
My headlights and windshield have some pits in them. That's why they were certain it was not defective paint. I didn't get an estimate but they ballparked over 10k to repaint and replace all pitted glass and plastic. It's really not noticeable unless you go looking for it. I bought a KIA paint pen and will touch up all the microchips. The windshield will eventually get a chip big enough to crack it and I'll get a new one then.

I'm not going to get it fixed as it's possible it might happen again. Price you pay traveling in SD, WY and MT in the winter.

Ouch! Hope it doesn't look too noticeable. It also reminds me to go purchase repair paint before winter to make sure the paint chip doesn't expand. Good luck!

I have gotten over the initial pain. I can now drive the car and not worry about getting more rock chips. I'll just touch them up as they occur. I'll still park far away from other people and treat it like a garage queen. Our place in MT is nine miles off the highway. First 5 miles are graded gravel and then 4 miles of dirt that can be very smooth or atrocious washed out mud depending on the time of the the year. Our Telluride won't be babied by any means.

There are bigger problems to deal with the Telluride (mine has not arrived yet).

The windshield wipers cannot be lifted to clear ice and snow.
It will accumulate under the upper hood lip and break the windshield wiper arms. The upper hood lip prevents wiper arms from being lifted, so the trough can be cleared of ice.
The wipers can be lifted. There is a video on YouTube explaining how.

Just up I-29 and across I-90 like I have many times before. They use sand on the roads in WY, MT and SD. Not sure why this time was different. Maybe in the past I haven't been able to drive as fast or the wind was heavier.
This makes me worry about how ours will hold up. Live in SD and drive frequently between here and ND.

Turn car on, turn car off, hold wiper stalk up a few seconds

??? I am not sure what you mean here? With the Telly OFF press and hold the wiper button up like you want to mist the windshield for about 3 seconds. Arms move and stand straight up and down, and can then be moved out away from the windshield if you want, or perhaps that is enough to clear the ice and snow. Its definitely not a major defect or issue.

I filed a complain and waiting for a response from Kia. I too have a few chips

Did a 2,600 mile road trip to Montana. We have a 2nd home there and I have done this trip scores of times in other vehicles. Cleaning up our brand new Telluride today and I noticed that there are numerous paint chips all over the front of the vehicle, a handful on the hood and some on the mirrors. The windshield also has many micro chips. The font area with the Telluride lettering has in excess of fifty chips.

Now driving across I-90 in the winter is rough on vehicles. They use sand on the roads and obviously it gets kicked up by the vehicles in front. But sand shouldn't chip a vehicle's paint.

I have never had issues like this with the Chevy trucks and Jeep vehicles we have owned that have made this trip. Sure a rock getting kicked up will chip paint but sand shouldn't.

Very disappointed with the durability of the paint and windshield. Otherwise this is the best highway vehicle we have ever owned.

I'm going to get a paint pen and have our insurance company look at the windshield.

This sucks.
Hey- check out the letter one owner got in the forum- its about defective windshields - David

check out what one owner got from Kia- a letter regarding soft or non repairable windshields - might help your cause

Chevy paint/clear is very hard and does not chip easily. If you think KIA paint is soft and chips easily, you should stay away from Subarus. Subaru is very soft.
I’ve had my Subaru 3.5 years and I’m beyond glad I did not buy this thing vs lease. The amount of paint damage...which became apparent very early on...wow Just....wow! Making me consider the PPF for a lot more than just the clear bra, that’s for sure. I plan to keep my telluride for a very long time!

I just got 3M treatment to avoid all this for the most part. Full front and all good and mirrors around 1500 w/o tax. Looks good

I cannot believe you complain about this. How is that a defect? So that means the people that do 3M clear bra and ceramic coating are hypocrites then? I'm sure the robots paint with the same process as any other top manifacturers do. You guys use this place to just bitch and complain. You are driving 75+ mph on some of these highways plus the wind and there will be debris that will impact with your car. I came here thinking there will be people that will pimp out their cars posting DIY's with pictures but some of you guys complaints are worse than hearing women complaining in body shops. So if you are driving and get a rockchip on your windshield, you are gonna try to warranty that too then? Where is your common sense? Even if you get the most expensive bumper to bumper warranty, they are not gonna cover your wear-and-tares such as your brake pads, wipers, tires, belts, etc.
Did you consider this may have been a 'bad batch' of paint, which indicates poor quality control. As long as people accept sub-par quality work, they will keep selling the automobiles. All manufacturers are similar; the just want to sell cars, sans service. I just had a similar problem with my 2019 Camry XSE V6. The window locks wouldn't work, but they insisted the did, even when I proved to them they didn't. I find too little information about this incident to make a decision about the vehicle. The windshield chip is an obvious occurrence of any vehicle, and not the manufacturers fault. The damage caused by sand? It could or could not be a paint problem. Sorry about your dilemma.

We bought a new Kia Telluride in August (first Kia owned I was always a Toyota buyer)I live in Maine and found that after this last winter that the paint all along the top edge of the windshield has chipped. I took it to the dealer and they said that it looks like I used an ice scraper on the window and ti caused the scratching. There are also scratches where I broomed off the roof and one long streak on the hood. The chips and scratches must have been caused by the ice - my guess is that they have not tested in winter conditions or they would have fixed the paint and also changed the windshield sprayers that are covered with the slightest snow. I have had a Rav4 for f13 years with no paint issues and I use an ice scraper just as often. The dealer said call customer service and customer service said call the dealer. I thought I would check to see if there are paint issues which it is. I will go back to the dealer now to see if they change their tune based on these comments and then file with the BBB if I can't get satisfaction. It would do anything but I will at least feel better you would think a $45K Kia would have better paint that a 15K Toyota .

Just for the record, montana, washington, and oregon all use the same standards for sand. That is crushed rocks through a screen that is less then 5/16th of an inch.

So, in this case, sand is anything less then 1/3 of an inch.

Be careful when you post any negatives about the Telluride, the cult will attack you. I read many complaints on the Telluride section of FB.

Just for the record....paint on ALL vehicles , while much is beautiful, none is as durable as it used to be....lead is gone, and other aspects make the paint very susceptible to chips and the brutality of winter salt/cinder, etc. In the past 20 years I have owned Mercedes, Cadilac, Ford and all have suffered paint issues.....and ALL cost more than this wonderful KIA vehicle! ( which, yes.....will have paint issues )

Yes, this is paint and it will chip. If you don’t want paint chips, you have two options: 1 is don’t drive the vehicle, 2 is cover the front with Paint Protection Film. Otherwise, it is going to chip and scratch when something harder and sharper comes into contact with it. The is especially true with the Telluride as the front end is very straight, perpendicular to the ground. It is like a wall....

And.....unfortunately, the norm today in many northern areas is that roads are treated with the "salt and cinder" concept along with liquid "pretreat" all of this is much harsher on vehicles than the old "plow and sand".

We've had our 2020 Telluride since June of 2020. I took it to the carwash today and as I was spraying the bugs off that didn't budge with the brush, I watched the clear coat peel off the car and take some of the paint in streaks with it. I'm beyond upset and KIA will be hearing about it when the service department opens on Monday morning!

If you are expecting ice or wet snow and need to park outside you can “set” your wipers vertical so they rest on the windshield. Havent tried this myself but it is in your manual - it Is also how you change your wipers.
