Tell us about the "Highway Driving Assist (HDA)" feature

Drove from New York to Maryland using the smart features, and it was amazing. I did notice on sharper turns that sometimes it drifts to the edge of the lane and starts beeping, but other than that it was a smooth ride. I found that HDA does work when I had android auto going, so not sure why the book says it wont. I had waze/spotify going on android auto and HDA still adjusted speed correctly when set to match the current speed limit. Clearly highway driving it isn't ideal to do the speed limit, so I set mine much higher and just let it adjust to match the car in front of me. Its a very minor inconvenience to look for speed limit signs and adjust accordingly.

The braking took some getting use to, and the maximum follow distance is way too much. At 75mph I was about 20 car lengths behind the vehicle in front of me. Once adjusted to the lower setting it was right where I expected it to be.

Are you saying that you were able to override the speed limit using HDA and use your own desired speed setting with HDA still active?

you dont need SX or EX... i drove our Dark Moss S AWD for 90 miles on fwy barely touched the wheel and Smart cruise ajdusts speed too... works much better from left 2 lanes... I was impressed. dont get too lazy w it... that's not what its designed for!

Only caution to setting your follow distance too close. Your Telly may brake later and harder than it needs to causing cars following you to do the same.

Yes. I engaged the cruise control, and set it manually to a speed I liked (80 mph). The speed limit of the highway was 75. The HUD showed that HDA and lane keep were green and in control. If the vehicle stopped in traffic, HDA auto resumed when traffic started moving again. I did not have to press any buttons. The only thing it would not do is adjust the speed based on speed limit. If no traffic was in front of me, and the speed limit dropped from 75 to 60, I would still be going 80. I did test setting the speed limit to 75, and instead of showing my cruise control set speed, it just shows "AUTO". It would then change my speed to match the speed limit of the road.

Some of this conflicts with how the book reads, but it appears the only HDA feature that is deactivated by not matching speed is the auto speed adjustment. Auto start/stop still functions.

That is great to hear, my biggest concern with the feature would be locked into the speed limit which can be dangerous on some of the interstates where traffic moves 20 miles over the posted speed limit making me a hazard to others. I've been torn between the Honda Pilot Elite because it's a sure thing and the Telluride SX with P/Pkg but your feedback just tilted the balance towards a Telluride.

The only time I could not get HDA to engage was on local roads, which does line up with the book. Zooming around town HDA will not take over, as soon as I get on the interstate its back on regardless of speed setting.

it will if u dont drive in the rt lane... Cruise is not effective as it should be..mu dont need it

I was in the left lane (4 lane road). Lanes were clearly marked, but this is a local road. The on board navigation did not have speed limit programmed in, so HDA would not come on. I was just using this road for testing, it is not the type of road you would ever want to set cruise on. There is a red light or stop sign every quarter mile.

The Korean version of HDA on the Palisade has an exclusive feature, it slows for the speed detectors.

He shows the feature at about 10:10 in the video.

Neat feature, but not for the north american market.

HDA is a safety feature, just like Lane Following Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go. HDA is an enhancement to the self drive assist package mentioned. You do not have to have HDA to have level 2 auto driving. As a matter of fact the LX and S do not come with HDA but is able to have level 2 driving.

That being said, HDA can only be activated on certain federal highways. Just because the HDA icon is displayed on the screen does not mean it is on. It's really in standby mode. It's only active when "AUTO" is displayed next to the HDA Icon. This happens when you manually match the cruise speed with the speed limit on the GPS.

i think you are wrong i have an S and ADA and Smart cruise it drives itself... if you read the options list your not really getting 10 to 12k worth of stuff to upgrade to sx or sx prestige imho... in a year Kbb will only probably give you 1.5 or 2 k worth of value

If I am not mistaken, its because in Korea and Japan those speed cameras are marked on the maps. They showed it in an episode of top gear. They knew exactly where they were going to be. If the US did something similar they would be able to do it here also.

I do not think that is entirely true. If I am not mistaken auto restart after a full stop is a feature of HDA. Without HDA, you have to press a resume button to make the car go from a dead stop. You are not mistaken, as I stated previously in this thread, "auto restart" is an undocumented feature of HDA (at least I couldn't find any information on it). Without HDA, you have to manually intervene to restart from a standstill.

I can see where I might have made it confusing. I was responding to someone else's comment wrt to the documented function of HDA but neglected to change the context when I decided to post instead of respond. Sorry for the confusion.

The sales manager from Honda called me earlier with an incredible offer on a 2019 Pilot Elite at the EX Telluride trim rate which I would have jumped on without a second thought before I test drove the Telluride. Finding this blog and hearing what owners are saying about the driver assist technology has me putting the brakes on going with the Honda which I don't believe has driver assist capabilities any where close to the Telluride. Question for the community here of Telluride owners, have any of you had a Honda or Toyota that has driver assist technology and if so how would you campare it to the Telluride?

I’ve tested the HDA on Highway and local roads. Haven’t had a problem. Able to set own speed even above the designated speed limit. Does a great job of slowing down with traffic and going around curves.

My 2017 Honda CR-V and 2015 Hyundai Genesis both have Accommodating Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assist features. Both work equally well. Neither will adjust your set speed, both with pave the vehicle in front. Both come to a complete stop and automatically restart when the car in front pulls away; if it pull away after a relatively short period of time. I just hit the resume button. My hands are right there on the wheel. (Yours should be too.)

The Pilot is due for a redesign, so its systems may not be as advanced as my CR-V. It appears that there are only a few vendors for this tech. It is very similar across manufacturers.

Thanks for the feedback, you touched on my main concern which is that the Pilot is do for a makeover and with second generation Driver Assist making substantial advances over the basic systems that are in the 2019 pilot I might be better off sitting tight for another year or going with the Telluride if i can ever get the one I want. I have to admit the deal offered on the Pilot is very attractive but i just believe that i will have buyers remorse over the current technology that is in it.
