The 2023 Towing Saga Part 2 - Finally good news!

Do any of you know if a 2020-2022 bumper trim cover like these shown here will fit over a non-OEM hitch (Curt) and the wiring harness from Canada with proper trimming of the hitch penetration opening? I would like to have my new hitch/harness look as close to OEM as possible when finished. I would attach a harness mounting bracket behind the harness opening in the panel for security and durability.

Update: Never mind. I found the answer. The 2022 cover will not fit the space.

I took a different direction when mounting the 7-pin connector. I've been struggling with the cutouts that people need to make when installing the OEM receiver. I like that it rides up a little higher on the bumper. But those WIDE cuts you need to make to accommodate the safety chain hoops just really put me off. So, I decided to test another approach. Rather than getting (and paying for) an OEM receiver, I'm installing the Curt C13420 from eTrailer and mounting the connector flush, from behind the rear skid plate. I wanted to make sure the harness worked and fit before committing to non-OEM and, so, I installed the harness and connector first. Photos here of the result. Receiver goes on in the next few days.View attachment 30953View attachment 30954View attachment 30958View attachment 30961
Is that the Hyundai Canada harness or aftermarket one?

It sort of depends on how fussy you are. I installed the hitch and cut the bumper cover to fit around the hitch. To me it looks good and I'm fussy as ever. On the other hand without doing that I couldn't tow which made me hate the car. I will buy the companion bumper cover when available and install. I'm still waiting on the harness but you can see where it attaches in the pics.
How are you going to run the harness? It seems the hitch cover goes right where the 7 pin connector will go? I’m trying to install mine now and i don’t want to cut out that whole piece because i don’t think the cover will stay on then. :/

The cover pre 23 will only fit Kia OE hitches. It may fit other brands with major adjustments but at this point you would be better off cutting up the existing cover plate

Welp i just installed mine and everything seems to be working fine. Two things though that have me worried. My back hatch wouldn’t close when I pressed the button after completing the job. It Just beeped 3 times and nothing. I had to physically close it and it seems to work now. I did disconnect the battery so im hoping that’s all that was. 2. I have a 7 pin to 4 pin adapter I’ve used before but it seems really loose when I plug it in. A little concerned the connections might flicker or something. Or it might just fall out. Anyone else’s loose like that??

Follow the template. The cover will not fall off. It stays on just fine with the edge clips and the bottom two push/pin clips.

I did use the template. It just seems to need some more room now that I have the 7 pin harness installed. It looks like i can just open it up a little more. I Was worried I’d have to completely cut it to get it to fit. But i don’t think that’s the case now. Thanks

I had the exact same experience - had to manually close the back hatch but I assumed it was because I removed the negative lead. Has been working fine since.

I also successfully installed the Palisade part, all plug and play as described above. I mounted my ground to an existing stud behind the panel trim and it seems to work fine. I can confirm that the rear-collision detection is turned off, but found out the hard way it's only turned off if the trailer is connected (plug in). Clever. Also, because I have a teardrop with its own battery I can read the 12v feed coming from the Telluride through the Palisade wiring - shows I am getting 50W of power from the tow vehicle. FWIW. As for timing it took nearly a month for it to get to me after it shipped - it sat in customs for nearly three weeks, and took another week to slowly make its way from Toronto to Philadelphia. Actually it took a day from Toronto to Philly, then a week for USPS to close the last 10 miles to my house.

That is good to know. I talked with some others here and they didn’t disconnect the battery but I was scared so I did. Then the hatch wouldn’t close and i was like. Perfect. Follow instructions and F it up anyway!

Thanks

Last but not least - make the cutout for the wiring in the rear bumper trailer hitch trim panel. Based on where I mounted things - I cut a hole in the panel as shown below. The final install pics are also shown. It's not nearly as clean as the factory - but I think it looks pretty darned clean given that there is no factory solution right now.

Happy Trailering!
Thank you SO much for these detailed instructions. Just finished my install and everything appears to be working as it should. I don't think I could have done it without your step-by-step guidance. So many, many thanks!

All, thanks for the in-depth install steps as well as all the info. Just placed the order for the harness through the provided Canadian site and hoping to have it in hand by the end of the month/early august.

On another note I waited a month to have the Kia dealership look at our 23 Telluride just to tell me Harness does not exist and to use U-Haul. Really Surprised this has not become bigger than it currently is.

Thanks again

The saddest thing is they don’t seem to care!!!! Spending millions for stupid ads that these SUV must be off road autos!!!! Wonder what they would say if u have a big warranty claim while out in the woods????

YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!
And unbelievably, it has carried over to the new year '24 models. I had the hitch ordered with my new '24 and sure enough - it showed up without it. Now I have to jump through hoops to get it myself.

Thanks tyger23.

I gave my dealer print out pics, tyger23 YouTube vid link Link to hyundaiparts pro, link to this forum.

I managed to convince them.

They used the kia oem hitch and they bought directly the hyundai wiring harness from hyundaipartspro and they installed it.

I'm a happy chap.

So, I'm sure several of you have already figured out what an idiot I am. Thank you for not rubbing it in. Yep, the actual hitch receiver frame takes up space I needed for the 7-pin connector. It's close, but no banana. Thank goodness the rear skid plate (KIA 86672-S9500) is available as a spare part. Back to the drawing board... At least the hitch receiver is installed and looks great. I may actually be able to launch my boat this weekend.

Towed my boat yesterday with 23 wire harness fully installed. Boat is 5 pin not a 7 pin so no trailer brake required. Used a 7 pin to 5 pin adapter so I didn’t need the surge brake lockout. Not sure if it means anything, but Telly did not beep and apply brakes while I was backing up, whereas the previous Curt direct wire setup did. I assume there is some intelligence in the converter box so that it turns off the backup sensors. I also did not need to press the button to turn off the parking sensors, but I noticed I forgot to do that while backing the boat and pressed it anyway. The sudden stopping and beeping is alarming with the non-OEM setup.

have not towed my travel trailer yet, but so far promising that one harness is so far meeting all expectation
Hi CS and thanks for this post. I have a boat trailer that uses a flat 5 connector (with 7 pin to 5 pin adapter) with surge brakes. A few questions. Is this the same as your setup? Are you saying that the 2023 telluride wiring harness correctly disables the trailer surge brakes when backing up? Did you order the wiring harness through a dealer? Can you give me the part number?

Yes the 5th pin disabled the surge brake on my trailer so I didn’t need the steel lock key that you put on trailer to back up. The harness is the 2023 Hyundai Pallisade harness 7 pin from hyundaipartspro that everyone is ordering. Sorry not near the box so don’t have the part number. Once you have it installed just get a 7 t0 5 pin converter and enjoy no using the surge brake lockout key and no beeping and sudden braking from th telluride while backing up the trailer

not tryin to steel this thread but Part # is S8F67AC800.......
