• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Hello all, I am about to place order any day and cant decide between tow package or not. I will never tow anything. I need the hitch for bike rack only, i have seen the curt after market hitch which looks simple to install. The only reason I am torn is because of self leveling shocks. we do take trips with decent luggage (roof rack) , 6-7 people and 4 bike rack . do you think is worth extra $700 for that or am I just wasting money because I really wont be getting any benefit from self leveling shocks ?

You could buy the hitch and cover for less and have it installed or DIY. I have been thinking about buying the Stealth hitch since I have no plans to tow but want the square receiver for a rack.

I decided against the tow package solely to avoid the self leveling suspension. Nearly every photo I've seen with those shocks equipped had the rear end sagging, especially with a light load. I don't tow anything anyways, but was considering the package in the event I wanted to hookup a bike rack as well.

I think you're better off installing a hitch afterwards.

thanks that's what i am leaning towards curt hitch cost $200 with tax compare to almost $900 with tax for the towing package .

I went with the tow package specifically for the self-leveling shocks. I do not tow often, but have towed, a small utility trailer, a number of times and have noticed that once you are moving, the rear end levels off nicely. The shocks only self-level when your are moving. I mainly use the hitch for my bike rack. I have also installed a curt hitch on a neighbor's Telluride, but it does hang below bumper. What about ordering just the hitch w/harness ($475)? This way it looks factory installed and sits within bumper versus below it.

was thinking about that as well, so that option doesn't come with self leveling shocks?

I always use an after market hitch receiver, they are simple to install, just bolt on, not sure how it would affect self leveling shocks though. The hitch receivers are just bolt on, anyone can do it. I won't pay a dealer's high price for the same thing.

While others have have stated that the self leveling shocks need movement under load to level off, the appearance of a sagging rear end contradicts most stock light trucks having a higher read end instead. While the vehicle might be level and adjust during movement, not everyone here on this forum have said the same. I ordered without the Tow package, but I believe you can order the factory installed hitch without the tow package if you wanted to avoid any possible hassles with the self leveling shocks. To be fair, they might improve the ride quality, but the squatting rear end while parked is something people probably need to be aware of.

saw the video and instruction looks simple , 4 bolts on each side. i am just debating if having the upgraded shocks worth it even though i will never tow. will it help if i have lot of people and some luggage with leveling.

I had 10 bags of top soil in the back of my Telluride and when I got in I noticed sag. Once moving I noticed that the rear end did raise.

The lifespan of vehicle ownership is potentially a long time to think you'll never tow. That's what I thought on my last vehicle, but a utility trailer entered my life after all. All a matter of opinion, of course, but I think it's worth it to get the full factory package. Might also be attractive to potential buyers down the road.

i agree with you 100% the more i think about it i might just do it with tow. however i heard anything ordered with tow right now is taking longer then usual.

I almost hate to chime in here because I did so before on a towing issue and someone immediately wrote a book about it trying to counter my opinion. Here goes anyway. You never know if you are going to tow something unexpectedly however in your case you want it for a rack attachment so unless you are ok with the hitch riding below the bumper giving less ground clearance when you enter or exit a drive or someplace with an incline (approach and exit angle if you will) I would suggest factory install. Yes, it will cost more to start but it will ultimately provide better height and less chance of scraping the bottom of the hitch or anything extending from it.

thank you
You are welcome. I may not know everything about towing but I have towed a lot of different types of trailers, cars, etc. over a good number of years with nearly every vehicle I have ever owned. I have installed hitches, had factory hitches, had hitches installed and just about the time you think you will never scrape, well that is when it will happen. Keep the hitch as high as you can while the tow load level and properly loaded and it will still find a way to scrape/bottom out.

i am planning on keeping this car for long time so like you said you never know when you need to tow. plus i think when time comes to resale it will help. i think i will just order with tow.

If you're planning on carrying a bunch or people or stuff, you will want the self-levelling suspension. Without it the car will sag like a dog with an itchy bum. I got it and it works well.
