When should I expect a VIN to become available and how often are ETAs updated by Kia?

I was lucky enough to pick up a supplemental allocation through my dealer last month. I have an order number and an ETA of 8/27. I’m wondering two things:
1) what is a reasonable timeline to expect a VIN
2) how often do dealers get ETA updates for orders that Kia has picked up. I would like to ping my sales rep to see if there are any updates, but I don‘t want to be a pest if he is likely to only get an update once a month.

If you have an ETA then there should be a VIN already, you can check failcat.com yourself if the dealer hasn't provided it to you. I can't answer you question about how often they get an ETA but I'm guessing it's ever changing. If you don't want to reach out to your dealer you can always go in the "track my vehicle" post and ask Stephen to look it up for you.

I got notified on 4/15 my dealer had an allocated vehicle that matched my wants, with an initial ETA. VIN showed up 5/11, and that same day, he gave me ETA update. 5/20 have me a new update it was in transit, new guess as to when it would be in, then a couple hours later, sent a pic of my Telluride on the truck, at the dealership. I don't think there's a set time frame, just how often they check.

I will happily do that, but I don’t think he can do that until there is a VIN, which it is not in Failcat yet. I’m sure Steve will correct me if I am wrong.

Just so you know, Failcat can be off at times. My car showed up on Failcat before I knew it because it wasn't showing the Prestige and Towing packages. When I got the VIN, I matched it up and the Window Sticker was correct with the packages.

There is an initial ETA that is given after KIA has accepted the order, but before the VIN. My dealer didn't want to share it with me though, because it can change "wildly" until the VIN is posted

Interesting, I was under the impression they came hand in hand typically - at least for orders. Your ETA seems very long from time of acceptance.

Still no VIN in Failcat and I recall seeing somewhere that its typically around a month before the estimated delivery that it shows up in Failcat. But I've also read it can vary from a week to a month or more. I have no idea how often dealerships get updated ETAs. I've all but given up on getting any update from my dealership and trying to (not so) patiently wait for my VIN to show in Failcat. I think once you have a VIN you can head over to the Track my vehicle thread and get updates there. Until then, it's a waiting game.

Lol...they're not the best at communicating and my sales rep seems to know nothing about the ordering process or the model year changes. The new car sales manager was very knowledgeable and useful so now I know to just ask for him.

A VIN is created when the car goes into paint. When the order is accepted, an initial delivery date is generated. That can swing wildly. Expect a VIN about a month +- before delivery date

Sounds like exactly what I was dealing with except every time I would call for the new car sales manager he was not there and has never returned my voicemails. I got WAY more info prior to ordering from the dealership I switched to. Glad to hear yours has been accepted and is getting closer though.

I ordered 3/31 wolf grey SX prestige NF… still not a word on it. Debated cancelling and switching but figured I’d be In the same boat. Dealer told me I was 12th in line and another dealer told me it goes buy color and trim. They process them in batches Either way I’m sure it will be every bit of 6-8month wait. Dealer allocations in failcat are maybe 2-4 / month

Your dealer won't have an ETA until it is picked up in KFOS. I placed my order in Feb and didn't get an ETA until it was picked up in KFOS in June. I would check with your dealership (ask for the new car sales manager...not your sales rep) to find out if it's been picked up yet. If it has, then they should have an ETA. If it hasn't, it's still in KDealer waiting to be picked up. Stephen needs a VIN to see an ETA and you won't get a VIN until the paint goes on.

So based on that number you were the 12th Telluride order placed that day. Do you know how many are ahead of you in line? That’s really important when estimating how long it’ll be. Your dealer gets about 7 allocations per month, so you can do the math once you know your place in line.

If I remember my deciphering correctly, your order was entered on June 3 at the Bend Oregon dealership and you were the 12th that they entered that day. You should find out how many orders are in front of you. They haven't had that many delivered to them

Per my dealer my order was picked up and he provided an ETA already. My question was, give we know the ETAs move around, how often do they get updated?
