Bad Dealer Dealings - List Your Bad Dealer Experience

I've been researching too and thought I would add what I have learned about mark-ups(I'm in Charleston, SC but am looking all around me). I've been looking at S Trims. Some are estimates because I didn't see the sticker but can guesstimate based on the options they said they had:

Stokes Kia (Charleston): $5K
Kia Country (Charleston) $3400
Superior Kia (Orangeburg, SC): $4-6K (estimate based on failcat allotment, but was quoted $45,703 for an S trim)
Paramount Kia of Asheville: $10k
Kia of Greer, SC: $10K
Benson Kia of Spartanburg, SC: $6K
Myrtle Beach Kia: $3K package added (cargo tray, pin strip, mud flaps, wheel locks, nitrogen, 3 yr key replacement)
Lumberton Kia, NC: Wouldn't give me a price over the phone due to 'competitive market' but said up to $10k markup on 22 Tellurides

Good news?
Henderick Kia in Cary, NC: MSRP (allows order with a $1K refundable deposit)
Ricart Kia in Columbus, OH: MSRP (let's you know about incoming allotment and 'reserve' one coming in)
I can confirm Paramount Kia in Asheville is charging $10k over MSRP as I just connected with them. They should 100% be taken off the Good Dealer list if that has not already happened.

Is this purely dealers trying to take advantage of the situation? They aren’t paying anymore than their normal invoice are they? It’s really disgusting. I’d think at some point Kia would be concerned about this damaging their brand.

Asked them about this last month, with some dealers charging 15-20k over here on the west coast, even on pre-owned ones, no matter if 300 miles or 40k miles on the odometer. It’s disgusting. They care none.

Why sad? There have never been price restrictions on car prices. MSRP is a reference price for negotiation, unlike the list price for iPhone or some other products where manufacturers mandate retailers to sell at determined prices. After 50 years of car buying, I’ve seen periods where cars sell above and below MSRP. There were recent times when dealer cost and even invoice prices were available. At least, there are some dealers selling at MSRP.

It’s sad because it’s taking advantage of people. A few thousand dollars is one thing but 10-20k is criminal. And many dealers are lying about it, misrepresenting it, saying it’s across the board or a “market adjustment.” After this bubble recedes, people who paid are going to be in bad financial situation with their cars, especially if they look to sell before the car is paid off.

During my early years, a former car salesman friend told me not to believe what salesman say or do and may not be that knowledgeable. Don’t they always have a bad reputation?

Very true. But unfortunately some take their word :(. But on the flip side, when you come across an honest dealership and sales person, it feels like a breathe of fresh air!

While it outrages me, and I personally would never do business with dealers charging above MSRP, I understand why it’s legal (at least in the USA).

However, dealers who list their inflated prices as MSRP or who advertise the selling price as MSRP on their websites and then notify potential customers of a markup only when they come into the showroom to order (or, even worse, when the vehicle comes in for delivery) need to get nailed, and nailed hard. People need to call their states’ Attorneys General offices to report these shysters.

Not that it’s likely to do much, because ‘Murica, but at least it would make me feel better…

Welp, just had a bad dealer experience with Stevens Creek Kia in San Jose. I placed my order in July and everything went swimmingly until they informed me that my car arrived today and that they were adding a $6k markup which they neglected to mention over the past few months. Feels like they should have said something before taking my sizable deposit.

Sorry, that really sucks!

Sorry to hear that. Did you end up turning the car down?

Another reminder to get their price commitment in writing, even if it's an email confirming the order is for MSRP.

Hi all,

I've been doing some recent research on dealers in the NE and thought I'd contribute as I've gotten so much great info from here!

A few amazing dealer updates (many have been mentioned before, but adding them all)

Smithtown Kia - Smithtown, NY - $5,000
Island Kia - Staten Island, NY - $5,000
DiFeo Kia - Lakewood, NY - $9800 markup on an EX
Kia of Englewood - Englewood, NJ - $10,000
Destination Kia - Albany, NY - 10%
Danbury Kia - Danbury, CT - $10,000
Executive Kia - Wallingford, CT - $1,000
Jim Shorkey Kia - Irwin, PA - $1495 paint protection warranty, additional $1,000 if out of state
King Kia - Maryland - $6,000
Matt Blatt Kia - Tom's River, NY - $6,000
Kia West Nyacy - West Nyack, NY - $2500 (EX)
Scott Kia of Springfield - Springfield, PA - $5,000
Raceway Kia - Freehold, NJ - $5,000
South Kills Kia - McMurray, PA - $3,000
Kia Schenectady, NY - $7,500
Kia East Hartford, CT - $4,000

Hope this is useful.

I'm seriously tempted to start tweeting to Kia and these dealers very publically. I know Kia doesn't care and its all about supply and demand, but some of these places are advertising this is MSRP and not an upcharge.

I'm probably wasting my time i'd imagie

I know this is ridiculous! So I just want to clarify that I did get my LX AWD ordered for MSRP at Executive in Wallingford.. in case anyone is looking for one. I think the EX is $500 over... we need a benchseat... good luck! Now we wait...

Yup. I told the GM he needed to put the markup on the order form if that's what they are doing. We didn't discuss price so I assumed I was paying MSRP. At no point in the last 3 months did anyone ever mention a markup. Had they done so, I would have walked. The dealership I dealt with has plenty of order volume and didn't have any trouble placing the order and having it delivered so it's not like a rare occurrence. Given that they have their cash outlay for such a short period and having a quick sell-through helps them get more allocations, this seemed like an easy win and it's not uncommon to have cars with markup on the floor and no markup for special order.

Any point to calling Kia America to see if they can make this right? I assume it's a dead end and that they won't be responsive the way a premium brand would be in a similar circumstance.
