  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Could someone let me know, as I have not bought a car before out of state...

How does paying taxes work if you buy out of state?

I can tell you how it works in PA since I have bought a few cars in Ohio. I purchased the car and had the option to have the sales tax included with the financing. The dealer then cut me a check back for what I would owe where I live 7%. Once in PA, I took the car to my local AAA and had it registered in PA with the paperwork from the dealer and then paid the sales tax with the check they cut me back. If you want to pay the sales tax independently, you could pay it with your own funds. They give you a plate, your registration card and you are good to go. At AAA there is a small fee and perhaps a notary fee but it was well under $50.

I would just add each State can be a bit different. Unfortunately in California you can’t register an out of State vehicle at AAA. Also CA required me to do a SMOG test. Still same overall process you detailed above. Just check your home State dmv website.

o_O So your saying they make things a bit more difficult in CA?? Forgot to add proof of car insurance also. You just need a copy of your insurance Co and policy. You can call them after the transactions.

I bought my previous car in Maryland, and the dealer was able to charge/remit the proper taxes for Pennsylvania, and submit paperwork for PA registration. I drove away with my old PA tags installed on the vehicle. Really depends on the state/dealer.

Perhaps I misunderstood your comment, but my experience has been that either you or the dealer will need to add the new car to your insurance policy BEFORE you leave the lot. Otherwise, you will not be covered if you have an accident on the way home.

I purchased mine in Missouri on June 18, 2021, got it licensed and paid sales tax in Missouri because I was planning to stay there for two more months, then returned to my regular home in Washington state in mid August. Since I already had paid sales tax, Washington did not require that, but I only had to buy plates in Washington which was about $179. It wasn't that difficult.

I have had Erie insurance and never had to do this other than provide proof of coverage showing another car's coverage. I think almost all the time I have done this on weekends and they are closed anyway. I call them up on the Monday, give them the VIN and financial details and good to go. My insurance covers items like this just like you don't have to call them everytime you are driving a rental. Perhaps yours is different.

Wait a year or so? ;) I know timing is everything but I found mine used on a Jeep dealers lot in the South Hills 12/19 and they were dropping the price Every week. My wait time from checking it out and taking it home was 3 days.

any chance this was a White EX with a bench in the 2nd row? I kept seeing that, but I needed captain chairs for the kids :(
