Disable smart cruise control? 2023

I'm going to have to agree that there should be a way to use conventional cruise control and "smart" version. It's weak point is traffic, you will be hanging back enough that the driver ahead will be fine with hanging in the left lane because your not close enough for him to get the message. And if you do allow it to run the cruise, you will constantly get cars running up the right lane and then cutting into your lane because you're giving them plenty of space. Give me an option of my old school cruise that will run up the back end of a lane hog any day.

I am TOTALLY with you on this. I'm really pissed that my new Telluride doesn't have conventional, non-"smart", cruise control. STOP DRIVING MY CAR FOR ME, KIA!

I have a 2022 and disable the same way - hit cruise then hold the distance button down for a few seconds.

I hate smart cruise control. Not only because the closest distance is too far away from the leading vehicle, but because it's just another tool to incentivize not paying attention. Which is exactly what I do if I use it. If I'm in the right lane going 80 and the car in front is going 75, the Kia gently decelerates so as not to get too close. Finally, at some point, I realize I'm freaking going slower than I want and I can take action by passing. If I'm using normal cruise, it's seamless, I'm paying attention, I can change lanes AT SPEED without affecting other traffic because I'm aware I'm approaching another car and can monitor the left lane, and everything just flows better. I'd rather be on a highway full of mindful, attentive Jeff Gordon's than people zoned out behind technology that doesn't behave like, nor react as fast as, a human.

The fact that the 2023 Telluride does not have standard cruise control is maddening. Although I do appreciate the smart cruise control, it is WAY too intrusive in highway situations. I just got back from a 600 mile trip, and I was pissed the entire time that I was on the highway. I might not make it three years with this vehicle, and if I don't, I won't be getting another Kia/Hyundai.

I think it's been renamed to Manual Speed Limit Assist instead of just standard cruise control.

I actually put it through its paces and it is NOT a standard cruise control. It IS a limit alarm that goes off if you exceed the limit you have it set for.

Im not sure if this will work in the 2023..but i have a 2022 and how i was shown to use regular cruise is the distance button. As soon as u turn on cruise its automatically in hda, but u use the distance button and hold it for 3/5 seconds and it switches to regular cruise.

Well....I will just disagree with some of the concepts/comments.

First ... there is nothing more important, especially at highway speeds, than the 100 to 300 feet in front of you. It takes about 3 seconds to travel 300 feet at 70MPH. I know it is aggravating to try and maintain a safe following distance when other drivers see that 'safe space' as an invitation to cut in front of you. Unfortunately, you can not drive for them. All you can do is drop back and hope they move on so your safe space remains in place. In heavy traffic, you can reduce the following distance to the minimum and be especially alert or turn cruise off.

You can also fall in behind another vehicle in the right lane that is going about your speed (even if it is a little slower) and wait for traffic to clear up before you 'move on down the road'. In the end, you will most likely get there just as quickly.

I find the system to be effective but it does take a different mindset compared to most drivers on the road that just have to get ahead another few feet. Its not a race, its about getting to your destination safely, even if it takes a few extra minutes.

Many many years ago, I was one that was always in a hurry. Now I drive just like you described. Took me all of 5 mins to fall in love with SCC and HDA and HDA2. I use the first two constantly just on the slim chance I get distracted. They really are a stress reducer. Those that hate it ought to rethink it along those lines.

If I had to have only one type or another, I'd probably choose the Smart version. But I dearly wish there were two options (I have read the above suggestion of holding the Distance button but haven't had a chance to try it yet).

The problem with SCC is that it only looks at the vehicles it can "see". It doesn't see vehicles 2-4-10 cars ahead. It also seems slow to respond when you've slowed 20 MPH below the selected speed and go to pass a car with a clear left lane.

But as I said, if there were only one option I'd take SCC over standard. I drove our new (we've owned it just under 2 months but it's my wife's car) Telluride 8-10 hours this past weekend and used SCC almost all the time. Mostly on 4-lane divided highway, some 2-lane, and it was the bees knees 95% of the time. Heavy traffic is where it falls down because of the above stated reasons. While it does take a bit of time to get used to how to use it, I found it to be much better than the similar features in rentals I've had in the past, including both Audi and Mercedes (granted, 4-6 year old models from today).

The Telluride also has standard cruise control also. It’s your choice which to use.

Yes, I was referring to the 2022-2020 models. Sorry for any confusion.
